Watched Annihilation, 2018, and the entire time kept thinking "This feels like video game writing" and wouldn't you know it, the head writer Alex Garland, has in fact written for a bunch of video games. Namely, a few Devil May Cry games.

Red One.

Some problems.

So, Santa who travels w/ american military escort, is defacto monarch atop the most advanced technology on earth.  His dominion alone decides who is naughty.  He answers to no republic.  He doesn't seem to be using the capacity for anything other than  mining the Hearts and Minds (brainwashing) of children, indoctrinating them into an endless yearly cycle of consumerist consumption.

That about right?

Is this not EVERYTHING that is wrong with Civilization all in 1 movie?

The holiday cheer is skin deep.  This is a grave dystopia.  Our delusions run deep. This Culture isn't culture at all, it's a runaway fire.

Not even mentioning the enslavement of reindeer.

And through it all, the MILITARIZATION of Christmas, in all the characters, and the military industrial structure of Santa's organization.  You know, because our daily digest of school shootings and kevlar backpacks is NOT enough.  Santa with guns is our vision of childish merriment and wonder.

The writers, directors, producers, an entire conglomeration of people saw nothing wrong with this.

Secret Level felt like a huge missed opportunity to make something special, but they just took that giant budget and made something generic and forgettable. When you try to appeal to everybody, you appeal to nobody. Not a single episode really stood out to me, they all felt as if they could be happening in the same Universe, which in my mind defeats the point of the show.
I am hoping there will be a standout episode in the 2nd batch that showcases what this show could be by really differentiating the source material from the homogenized feel every other episode had. Looking forward to the Spelunky one, as long as they don't do something like they did with Pacman where the only link to the material is by name only.

Every quarter, there are a bunch of new anime shows that last only that quarter. I usually start watching a bunch of them, and continue watching those that I think are good. The ones I've found to have been most worth watching this quarter are:

- Dan da dan. About yokai and aliens that want to steal your banana. And teenagers. With attitude.
- Magilumiere: Based on a popular manga about Magical Girl being a profession: fly around and exterminate "kaii" that pop up at an even higher frequency. Magic is programmed by engineers.

Secret Level continuing to fumble the extremely generous ball given to them by somehow making creative and beloved franchises as generic and uninspired as possible.

Only Murders in the Building. The wife has been watching and I have been watching it with her. Steve Martin is the best, Selena is a close 2nd, and Martin Short's character is abrasive and awful. Just got into season 2, hopefully it holds up as the seasons go on.

Been playing around with youtube's 8K videos and Vitual super resolution.

If you render 8k hdr videos into 4K output, the scaler is not as good as sending 8K through VSR, and having VSR downsample to 4K. The VSR downscaling does a better job than youtube's scalar. The textures look softer and not as harsh in high density meshed edges.

But if you like extra sharpness, yea, the youtube scalar's not bad.

Unfortunately, Tp4 hasn't figured out how to screen shot this effect, since it captures the snap in 8k.

This doesn't exist, but I'd be super interested in a documentary on the mega-failure game Concord. I've only read snippets of some behind the scenes stuff from developers, and it sounds just insane. I need to know every sordid detail on how a $400 million game that took over 8 years to develop was shutdown and killed off less than 3 weeks into its lifecycle. It has to be one of the craziest stories of the video game industry, and I need to see a doc on it in 2025!

Tp4 really misses this era of lines.

You just don't see this soft block geometry in modern computer driven anime.

Watched the Always Sunny x Abbot Elementary crossover. The 'ol Sunny gang was heavily neutered to fit the audience expectations, and the only laugh it got out of me was the very last line of the episode. The episode structure was fine, and even without knowing the Abbot cast I could understand why each character was paired together. I get what they wanted to do, and if I were normal I'd say the episode was cute, but Abbot is clearly written for normal people.

Shrinking season 2. It’s easily in my top 10 shows of all time. A dark comedy about a therapist played by Jason Segel and Harrison Ford is also in it. Almost finished season 2. The spouse and I both laugh out loud the whole episode.

I honestly believe that Drumpf's complete lack of a sense of humor, and lack of joy, is why so many dysfunctional Americans are attracted to him.

I am very fortunate to have my spouse in my life. Having @TP4 call me successful may even be more of a win than having a spouse ;).

The show resonates with me because I lost my father at 21 and also struggled to cope and used substances to numb my brain and lost a lot of "time" in my life not taking care of myself. Apple TV does a really good job at the dark comedy. Jason Segel is one of my favorite actors and writers because his type of humor is exactly up my alley.

Fun fact, Jason Segel wrote the Dracula puppet musical in Forgetting Sarah Marshall BEFORE the movie ever came out. He asked Judd if he could add it as the ending to the movie and it worked.

It says its romantic thriller - hard to call it that, but it was pleasure to watch it. Romantic yes, but in little way I would say, not too sweet ;)

Section 31 (2025), Trek film.

Tp4 doesn't hate it, but it wasn't very gud'. Could've made it a much simpler episode.

They really should use AI, the script's weak.

It's chezzy soap, buhhh levity in these dark times.

But then again, the way it's constructed, they're very much TV formula, and so is it levity or a distraction / opium such that people can dull the psychological pain of modern life.  Living as mere cogs in a death machine spinning out of control.

When Television was classy. Hays code, couples slept in separate beds, respectability +++

Ah yes, Tp4 long for the 1950s minus the racism.

Tp4 is aware this particular show was made in the 70s.

Were you even around then? Those were halcyon days and the overwhelming majority of people understood that they had to "play the cards that they were dealt"

I believe that a whole lot of today's problems originate in movies and on TV showing "lifestyles of the rich and famous" that are making countless gullible people feel entitled to those same extravagent luxuries that they can never have, and making them jealous and angry when they don't get them.

My recollections of the 1950s are very warm and cuddly. In late 1958 my mother got a 1959 Impala convertible and we loved to stand up in the back seat (seat belts came along in the next car we got - and by that time I was too tall to stand up - even from the floor board).

We went to the grocery every few days and got fresh, locally produced food. You would have been nuts to think you could get a fresh strawberry in February, and we were stuck with canned fruits and vegetables for half the year. Milk was delivered to our front porch twice a week in glass bottles with cardboard insert tops. Also, ugh, the diaper truck came by twice a week (we pretty much had kids in diapers in the house until the mid-1960s) and took away a big bag of nasty stench and left a bag of freshly laundered white cotton ones.

We had little waste, because we didn't consume much. Our family was not small yet we seldom filled up a garbage can in a week. We had a very small number of toys and a few changes of clothing (and we were fairly prosperous by the standards of the day). There was one telephone in the house, and a television (we probably graduated from about a 10" to about a 20" late in the decade, and would not get a color set until the mid-1960s. And, the B&W-to-color did not come with an increase in screen size.

No, but Tp4 didn't get the very latest TV shows until much later, so mostly had alot of the early stuff depicting bedrooms with 2 separate beds, and no outlandish smooching.

Ugh... baby boomers ruined everything.  ;D

A lot of younger couples sleep in separate beds, there's an entire movement around it. If you value a good night sleep it is the obvious way to go.

One of the greatest things I miss from my divorce is having a warm body in bed with me.

And NO, I would never have an animal in my bed!

I'm an extremely light side-sleeper who switches sides at least 12-20x times every night, and sometimes kick or flail my arms when I do. Get woken up if a mouse farts 2 rooms over. Very specific about the temperature cause I get night sweats as well.
I wouldn't put that disruption on anyone. Sleeping has been a lifelong struggle for me, and probably will be to the day I die, so having another person in my bed basically guarantees I would be getting zero sleep that night. Often times even with perfect sleeping conditions I get zero sleep anyway. I get genuine REM sleep maybe once a month.

Same here, and my wife tolerates me well.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

When Television was classy. Hays code, couples slept in separate beds, respectability +++

Ah yes, Tp4 long for the 1950s minus the racism.
"The 50's" never existed, it was not some golden age where everything was great.

Yes you had racism, and lot of other "-isms"... Women couldn't vote or have credit cards and in many places weren't allowed to live on their own. You had the threat of nukes, WW2, Korean war, the beginnings of Vietnam... Gays were pretty much hiding at all costs. mental health care was flat out dangerous. The food was healthy, sometimes, same for air, remember there was less regulations. It also was exhausting. There was no takeout food, washing machines were very new. You might think straight white men had it pretty good (other than the war part) but you probably had 4-8 kids and a wife to support or young enough to be eligible for the draft (the U.S. didn't become all volunteer military until after Vietnam). Oh and contrary to how every HOA tries to replicate it, fathers didn't all rush off to work for the sales or factory job at the same time leaving a clean perfect neighborhood like HOAs try and replicate. Yes, there were some good points, but it is not some actual golden age people who lived it are in a hurry to get back to.

People forget the hard times and remember the good times, if we didn't women would never have more than one kid (ha!). What people remember or think it was like is based on Hollywood. Same for people wanting medieval times (or any other time in history), they all ignore that while nobles and nights may have lived good the average person lived in squalor, with little to no indoor plumbing. What makes you think your status in life would be any different then than it is now?  Would you have even survived to adulthood due to some (now considered) minor disease or birth defect? Or maybe you'd get shanghai'd into being a sailor.

Despite all craziness going on, NOW is probably one of the best times in history to live (okay, maybe the 90's or something). Modern regulations, better medical care, no major wars... We're going backwards and yet that is still better than all but the most recent past.

now with all that woke culture and colorful flags, wars, social media, telling people you can say what you want to say, but not really, as any different opinion is taken as hate... not the best time.
