Keyboard for the office
« on: Mon, 21 March 2016, 03:10:07 »
Hey! I own a ducky shine 5 and soon I will have the white fox. I am thinking its time i replace the work dell keyboard and the mouse I have.

Because the dell keyboard is DSA membrane I was able to pick up DVORAK by switching the buttons around.

I was thinking Id bring the shine 5 to the office ,but i think its too flashy also I don't trust people who clean at night to teat well.

Budget wise i am quiet flexible, but I would much appreciate if it come in DVORAK? I was browsing the CODE keyboards but I am sure that you guys can come up with something good!

Ducky Shine 5 w Mx Browns  | White fox w Zelio's purple 67g | Gateron Blank set

Current Aims: Jack O Lantern is my end game cap. Looking for one.

An old classic keyboard might be good for work - like a Model M, or a beige Alps keyboard.

They look too old and clunky to be worth anything, unless you cleaner is a secret keyboard fan.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

what a great idea! I always loved the model M. You recommend a specific model? I looked a few up, will need something with a windows button. Also I dont think they would support dvorak.

I was thinking something like a ducky but no fancy backlit stuff. Maybe i order a DSA set for it? oh God every Since i met geekhack,

Unicomp Model M's, they have windows keys.

The keycaps on the Model M's are all the same profile, so you can re-arrange them in DVORAK and the keyboard will still have an ergonomic arch to it because its on a curved backplate.

Not to mention, they are delicious thick dye sub PBT.

Unicomp PC122 for sure. Without a doubt. Let your office buddies know who is boss.

Oh.. Dvorak hmmm. Pok3r 60? Phantom 87? Infinity 60? Satan GH60? Planck? Atomic? Ergodox? CODE?

I'm guessing you can't do layout switching on the office PC. If you can switch the layout and you touch type, any keyboard should input as Dvorak.

I've never noticed anything that would lead me to believe the cleaning ppl touch the keyboard regardless of how flashy your keyboard is. They won't even pickup a keyboard to dust under it. Just take your ducky to work, turn off the lighting or the entire PC at the end of the day.

Go Ergo!

Get a MS Sculpt Ergonomic (yes, scissor switch, but it's fantastic)

or Ergodox so you can have DVORAK!

I briefly had BS boards at work...too loud for the open environment and too fatiguing even for someone who also had a keyboard full of tactile greys :P

My boss at a job some 6 years ago had a Model M. They gave him an entire room on his own. I think what he did, was incredible strategy. I have loud clicky switches ordered for a lets-annoy-everyone keyboard, because I want a room on my own as well.

So, loud keyboards have their uses in the office too! Just make sure you are valuable enough first. ;)

I've had a Majestouch 2 Ninja and a MX Board 6.0 at work and both have stayed in my possession. If you don't like them out all night use a locked cupboard.

I would, but I also want to get work done, and neither of those keyboards please me. :(

I also do not need a building on my own, that would be boring, so I'll settle with loud clicky switches and a room. For now, anyway. Later, I might mod the keyboard with a speaker and possibly other gadgets, to let the world hear my glorious typings.

I'm using a Filco Majestouch 2 TKL at work with MX Brown switches. It seems quiet enough not to annoy my colleagues.
I just put the clear plastic cover which came with the keyboard on it overnight, which seems to discourage the cleaners from trying to clean it with some possibly unsuitable product.

Maybe I look into the full version or or , get my ducky to work and replace home with the TKL ?

To be honest guys, I hoping i catch the white fox layout easily. So I can carry it to work and still have normal speed

I basically had 2 criteria for my work setup:
1. Cheap
2. Non-clicky

I just kept my eyes on eBay and finally found a broken Ducky with mx-blacks that worked out great. A quick swap of a bad switch and a deep cleaning and I had myself a great keyboard for stupid cheap. No one really messes with peoples stuff here but i still didn't trust any $100+ keyboard to stay around.

After tons of search I think ill go with a filco MJ2 Ninja. I think ninja just means blank so i might get the normal one because I will swap out the keycaps anyways. I am tying to think of which switch type but I figure brown again? What do you guys think?

Haha. Even after cleaning the Dell isn't bearable. I had to use multiple. I literally throw them away at the office and told my boss that they aren't keyboards, but employee bullying apparatus. So I bought a mech with blank pbt caps and everybody is like "bro.. you fooling us? why no legends? you think you better than me?" And then I have tmux open with vim and python and syntax highlighting and all that and than my colleagues are all like "dude what is that? is that minority report?" And then I'm sad sitting in a corner that I have no reallife programming friends that understand. And then I'm on GH again for a couple of hours :D

WASD Code in MX Clear. If you want Dvorak or a different layout, either use a DSA set where profile is uniform, or get WASD's laser printed keys.

Good I should get that then. I have a personal office and when I leave my door open, anybody can hear me. Win-win: they cannot say anything because it's my office but I would still annoy my co-workers. Awww yeaahh.

Plus, it'll be my first proper BS kb.

Got myself a Realforce 87u silent (black on black) at the office 2 years ago. Best investment ever.

It types like a dream. My productivity even went up because I can type faster on that keyboard.

It does not look flashy and is built to last. Price is pretty steep though.

Good I should get that then. I have a personal office and when I leave my door open, anybody can hear me. Win-win: they cannot say anything because it's my office but I would still annoy my co-workers. Awww yeaahh.

Plus, it'll be my first proper BS kb.

Also, this might be an unpopular opinion,  but I think getting a NEW unicomp is better than digging through the pile on Ebay..

Hahahahahaha..   Gotta get blank caps though, cuz u want to look 1337 @ your job.

Blank caps. Noted. Soo... what can I do to even more annoy my co-workers? Any tips or recommendations? :D

EDIT: This made me think. I once had my Filco MJT2 TKL with blank ducky thick pbt's in the office and a clerk wanted to help me do some invoices. She went mad. She really went through the roof: "where the f**k is your numpad? Why are there no legends? how do you TYPE on this thing? what is WRONG with you? you think this is funny?"

Hahahahahahaha. Oh man.

Non-qwerty layouts. Preferably something that is very different than QWERTY, such as Dvorak. (No Norman or Colemak, as those keep too many keys at the same position). Add a split keyboard too, and a left handed trackball.

ErgoDox with blues, blank keys and Dvorak, with a left-handed trackball between the two halves. That sounds fairly bad for anyone who has to listen, or attempt to use the keyboard.

Actually... it sounds horrible for me to use as well. I like it! Would be better if the ergodox has BS.. even noisier than blues. Well.. blues have a higher pitched noise so blues may be more annoying even.

You can place a mic & and amplifier near the keyboard, perhaps even mod the ErgoDox, and broadcast your typing at full volume. Oh, and leds that constantly light up in random colors, under random keys.

That's goood. That's REAL goood. You know what.. I should install disco lights in my office and make them change colors and patterns upon random keystrokes. And whenever I press spacebar you should hear screaming or moaning. And occasionally, after every 1000 keystrokes, it should send random crap to the printer.

Just pay attention to the disco lights following the rhythm of your typing, to haze a connection with the keyboard. Otherwise it is not cool, it's just random crap. But wired up to the keyboard... that is CLASSY AS ****.

Yep. Those can be random. But there are many possibilities!

I guess I also need personal bodyguards to prevent getting shot by employees going on rage after installing my new necessary - obviously - disco lights, speakers, and wiring.

You mentioned looking at the CODE earlier, you could get the non-backlit V2 model with MX Clears and have 'em print a Dvorak layout.

I currently use a Sculpt Ergo at work and brought my TKL V2 a few times, though it's mostly meant to stay at home. No complaints about noise from the nearby cubicles.

I don't have any BS boards to test their reaction... Come to think of it I'd probably just gain "geek cred" with the old timers :P More so if I somehow wound up with an old SGI board since that's what they ran years ago. (I keep my eyes peeled when in areas with older gear lying around, just in case.)

BS boards are +1 overpower. My first mech was a BS ;D I thought having a Dvorak layout keyset would be awesome until I tried the layout with a print out cheat sheet. I switch from Dvorak to qwerty. That Dvorak/Qwerty keyset would have been overkill for me. ymmv.

OP idk if you switch layouts but a lot of folks use a qwerty keyset or blanks and flip that Dvorak switch on the CODE. Qwerty layout enables +1 gaming at the office mode

I'd go for the KUL instead of the CODE. Better build quality. But you would have to swap out default caps if you want dvorak legends. Or just move the caps around.
