How do I fix PCB Stabilizer rattle?
« on: Tue, 03 May 2016, 00:46:50 »
as the title states.
What is causing the wire to rattle? and how do I fix it?

specifically the backspace on this keyboard.

when I press it there is a rattle sound. I can remove the stab without removing the plate

try putting tape on the + sign stabilizer pegs.

if it's not that, use a high viscosity SILICONE lubricant on the moving part where the wire contacts the plastic.

where did you get your stabs from? I have the same problem with chinese gold stabs, except it's mostly spacebar.

I got them from a user but I'm assuming they're Chinese gold stab. My Korean gold stabs are perfect

I'm fairly certain my spacebar stab rattles because it's just a tad too short. I took some SuperLube silicone grease and just squeezed a dab of it out the tip right onto where the stabilizer metal meets the PCB clip. Helps to dampen it a little bit and not be nearly as loose, but not too much so as to gunk down the movement. It's not perfect but it helps.

Don't use that white stuff, I have that exact same tube, it degrades, drys, and separates..  While it may work in the interim, you should really get that honda silcone stuff..

I think the best trick for getting rid of stab rattle is tuning it out.

I would like to know how to mod the stabs so they actually do what they are supposed to do. STABILIZE!
The + part on the Cherry stabs feel so loose which is what causes the spacebar to wobble. I opened up the keyboard to take a look and hopefully come up with a solution but I ended up only scratching my head. Any ideas?  :(

you need to make a video of the problem..

It's unclear what you consider "wobble"

Do you mean if you press one side of the spacebar, the opposite side pops up?  If so, you can take a small piece of plastic wrap (may need to fold it to be thick enough) and place it on the stem. The space it takes up should keep it snug.

Petroleum based lubes can eat plastic, you need a silicone based lube.

If you can't find it at a local auto parts or Walmart store, hobby shops are well stocked with it, or of course mail order it. Differential lube (should be clear) from a hobby shop is a dead ringer for what you find on Costar stabilizers from a few companies. Unfortunately if you have a plate, Cherry stabs are not easy to lube or mess with at all unless I've missing something as parts of it sit below the plate.

I think my Orion v2 (plastic plate) has same rattling issue in the backspace.

But by rattle I mean when softly pressing the left area of the backspace key, it would create a rattle, metal(ly) sound.

In my area, I found a premium grade electric motor grease (white grease) for cheap, and use it on moving parts especially on both ends of the wire. Works great so far.
