GH is pretty quiet these days...
« on: Sun, 10 July 2016, 02:11:19 »
or, is it my imagination? Granted, I wasn't in the board for the past month due to lots of work and getting really busy in real life but I do pop into GH once a while from Tapatalk, just a quick look. I thought the board is pretty quiet and slow. Kudos to rowdy for always welcoming new members but aside from that, not much is really happening. Is there a new game that everyone is playing or perhaps something sexy came along, cough Slack, cough?

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I recently started playing Blood & Wine for Witcher 3. I'm taking my time with it, but I would think the hardcore players have already beaten it by now.

I was not that much here the last weeks, but I thought the same! Maybe because it is summer?

It has been slow - I'd like to believe more people are outside *doing* instead of inside working on projects but I think it's coincided with the arrival of slack - why wait for answers and discussion when you can do it in realtime?  So your thoughts are preserved for those who come after :(

Yeah, I too believe it is Slack that's turning GH into a ghost town, lol. It is so much easier to have real time conversation there, except it's just too fast for me. I can not keep up with the pace.

And I also think that Ctrl Alt presence there in Slack is a crowd puller as well.

Yeah I tried chat rooms many years ago and they just don't work for me.  Any meaningful topic needs its own space so you have time to consider a response before three other topics get mixed in, and any non-meaningful topic should be separated so the disinterested (me) can ignore it.  Oh look - I described a forum!

It has been quiet lately.  In fact it's been very quiet since about the beginning of July.

At first I thought it might be something to do with Independence Day (a lot of members are in the US), but the pace hasn't really picked up in the week since.

The number of new members (who make an intro post - most don't) has remained fairly constant - maybe around 2 or 3 a day, occasionally a couple more.

But the rest of the boards are surprisingly quiet.

It's the middle of winter over here, but the middle of summer for the northern hemisphere, where the majority of members seem to be.  Perhaps they have all gone outside to experience real life for a little while.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Nope, quote mild actually.

Last winter 1 degree overnight was common, this time around (so far) it's been a balmy 5 or 6 overnight.

Same for day - we've had quite a few day s around 14 or 15, compared to the 8 or 9 it usually gets down to.

Might not sound like much of a difference, but there is.

But Overall... the breadth of ---Relatable--- human happenstance is quite narrow...

For example, I could start talking about linear guide rails, which I'm interested in,  but NO ONE else is..

I don't understand, by my calculations there's an upper LIMIT around $5000-8000 of how much stuff you can buy before you repeat buying nearly identical items..

I don't think this keyboard hobby is as expensive as claimed..

Well 8K is the upper limit..  if we take into account, most people are not interested in the Entirety of keyboard-dom, that figure would be average around 3-5k for most people..

Spread out over say 3 years for any hobby,   that'd only be $1000-1700 a year,

cheaper than cellphone plan..

You must have taken into account artisans as well, right? When I said you are not far off, I did take into account the artisan craze, as I think you are right - after a while, we'd be buying duplicates.

And no one buys duplicate artisans, especially HO's amirite?

I haven't been on much in the last couple of months. Ever since the Ivanpocalypse I just can't seem to get as excited about keyboards as I used to. Part of it is that I associated the idea of such a great community of enthusiasts, working together for the common good with keyboards. But lately I've seen a lot of selfishness left and right. I don't think it's any more than normal, but I think I didn't pay as much attention to it before. I did lose a fair amount of cash on the Miami Nights buy (2 of everything in that buy), but the personal betrayal really hit me hard.

I am trying to stay engaged, though.

$1000 a year, for a phone?!  I don't spend half that, just had a look and if I really wanted to I could - an  iphone 6s+ with unlimited calls and texts and 20gb data on the most expensive network comes out at $1008 at 1.3 $/£

I think keyboards is actually quite a steady hobby if you don't go crazy - you can start with nothing special and gradually work your way up unlike, say, photography or motor racing where you have a huge outlay before you can even try it.

While I was not affected by Ivan's buy, it was berserkerfan's mess that hit me hard. I wasn't affected but at the beginning, I did buy stuff from him, which he later refunded due to Paypal freezing his account. When he cleared up with PayPal, I decided to not continue my purchase. Reading about the trouble caused in his sale and also what happened with Ivan's buy does give me a smack on the face on how I have been living dangerously on the edge for the past 2 years, spending hundreds (maybe thousand) on these purchases which might turned sour. So, I have been ignoring Group Buys and reducing my participation on vendor sales. I need to be content with what I have.

I think a lot of it has been the Ctrl Alt slack... I've probably done 1/10th of the posts I would've done if I wasn't there. I only really use GH for my group buys/customs and the occasional ****posting now.

I don't get slack at all alternatively I've tried reddit but it's still confusing.

Guess it's time to find a new hobby.

I for one have been sapped into using the slack all the time. It is easier to talk to people i'm just closer with.
Also If im having issues, there are a few on there that can help out.

I try to participate on GH still though.

Personally I just joined GH not too long ago as I just started to get into collecting mech KBs & key caps. While researching mech KBs before I bought my 1st decent one this forum's name came up everywhere, I was quite excited to join & converse with people who have the same interests. Unfortunately this site does feel kinda barren most of the time if someone is just looking to BS about mech KB stuff. When you look through the forums there are not too many newer threads & only a few of the older threads are still very active. :( Although, it has proven to be a great resource for finding out when artisan raffles & group buys are going down.

I have faith it will pick back up soon though, from reading this thread it seems the biggest factors in GH being inactive lately is that it summer time for a lot of users & a lot of people have got burned on bad GBs lately leaving them kinda disillusioned with the scene, which is completely understandable IMO. I know I wouldn't want to even see anything mech KB related for awhile if I got burned good in GB gone bad.

There is new blood coming into the scene (such as myself   :)) ) & mech KBs are still picking up in popularity so I feel there will always be a need for GH to be around. As for the shadiness that has went down around GBs lately, unfortunately there will always be a few bad apples in the crowd who are looking to take advantage of others as opposed to helping others. There is nothing any of us can do to change that. Although I do think if we come together as a community & exile those people who take advantage of others we can keep the scene as awesome & trustworthy as it ever was. I know this post probably comes off as a little corny especially from a newb like me. But even though I am fairly new to the scene I have already made quite a few friends over mech KBs & have been shown great generosity from them. Just from that I feel that the scene still has a pulse & that 99% of the people involved are in it for the right reasons. We can't let a few a**holes kill our love for our hobby! It is up to us to protect & keep the scene alive, while I can only speak for myself I know I am ready to do whatever it takes to accomplish that goal. I can only hope that all the elder & established members feel the same way about it.  :thumb:

Don't even know what Slack is.  I despise most forms of instant messaging.  Never been my thing.  I do not like being immediately available or not having time for a response.

Plus it seems to get slow around here every summer. I know that I am getting outside more.
Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

Problem with synchronous conversation is that it's SLOWER for everyone..

The GH IRC has 200 people idling right now.  It's also pretty dead though, from what I can tell.

Right, I am not sure how I am supposed to keep up with the conversation if everyone is talking at the same time.

It picks up every now and then. From what I can gather it's mostly real technical, and I can't follow a lot of it. I've learned a few things by looking up some stuff though.  :))

Then it is clearly time for a new Donald Trump thread.
From the US Constitution, Article 1, Section 8 :

The Congress shall have Power

To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

I would much rather this be Bernie vs Trump than Trump vs Hillary. But I will take whatever I can get.

I saved the I Told you So juice in the freezer... hahahaha..

Basically,  I think it doesn't really matter if trump wins, because he'll be exactly like bush..  Generally Clueless, cabinet do all the work,

And Cheney is always in there somewhere, doing some shady thing..

If hillary wins.. that's the status quo..  8 more years of no change..  also not bad.

Ah Slack, I forgot about it. Looks like fresh and modern chat rooms or IRC, and remembers me of chat rooms in the late 90s  :)

I've noticed it. Almost the end of the weekend and there's only been 21 votes in the KOTM poll so far...

I remember when there used to be the whole page of Off Topic to go through. Now not even the steady stream of tp threads can fill my desire for content...

Even if his taste in sci-fi fils leaves A LOT to be desired...  >:D
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Pssssshhh..

Don't be h8n'..

Tp4 = Xpert Scifi-Movie watcher..

Every movie has something or many things done wrong.. But over time, I've felt that it's really your job as the audience to relinquish judgement and control.  There's a budget on these movies, and they do not have infinite resources to pay the best writer to close every hanging detail..

As long as the film isn't LAZY,  like the Transformer films..    then we should just be cool with what we get..

You are being disrespectful and trying to take away from all the hard work that the CGI people do by calling them LAZY. CGI is as harder than prop-makingasdfasdfasdf

I think it's always quiet during the summer months. I would venture a guess and say most of the userbase is in high school/college. People are out on summer break doing thangs.

:thumb:
Great post! Welcome to GH! Hope you will find enjoyment here as well. This is the place for keyboard enthusiast as you have discovered. I feel that the other more popular place (reddit) is typically filled with new keyboard owners, proud of their purchase and probably didn't stay too long, thus not necessarily someone who is an enthusiast. Here, you find the like minded people. Of course there are bad eggs, so we just have to be extra careful.
