Idea of a new hack.
« on: Fri, 26 August 2016, 00:24:48 »
I clipped the pastic part of the cherry stabs that hold the wire and therefore the wire can move around more freely. I have the impression the type feeling improved, since the rebound time is less. When you press spacebar it immediately rebounces, not that sluggish anymore! A general problem is, that the wire may fall out. However, at my spacebar the keyboard case is so narrow, that it prevents the wire from falling out.

* I'm reffering to the blue part on the picture..

Tbh the one thing I really love about Cherry is their stabilisers, they absolutely ****ing nailed that design. It stabilises perfectly, it's durable, easy to take the caps off and put them back on, it's fantastic.

I have seen this procedure done, but only the ends of the blue line were clipped, not the entire piece so there was a little edge to prevent the wire from sliding out.  People say it improves the feel, but I was worried it would introduce wobble.  If this is an improvement then why weren't the stabilizers designed this way?  If it's clean and well lubricated there is almost no friction.

No, Cherry stabs are inferior to Costar..

Costar is just better engineered,  low contact surface,  CHEAP to produce, Smoother in operation

Cherry stabs may have the properties you mentioned,  but they're too damn german, over-engineered,  more sensitive to keycap warp, overall, they're also significantly more fricative..

That's not really an issue with keys you have to stabilise, though Oo .

Ye, they are definitely more fricative, that is why I clipped the blue part :-) I can affirm it removes friction, so it's an improvement. But you must go sure, that the wire doesn't fall out, for example by a very narrow space between wire and keyboard case walls.

I agree, I love working with Cherry stabs even if they're a bit mushy. Costar are rattly and annoying to work with.

The best stabilized keys I've ever come across are the ones on my SKCL Brown board, they don't rattle at all and go down buttery smooth. I think they're lubed out of the box.

There's an element of LUCK,  to all keyboards,

Because long key caps Warp.. happens all the time..

Costar is not very sensitive to slight warp.

So, even if there's a litttle-extra wobble,  I'd say that's worth the trade off for Smooth operation.

I like
wobble

I actually have never used a board with costar stabilizers, so I can't say if they are better or worse.  I understand it can be a pain to insert or remove a keycap with this satabilizer though.
