Where can I request a PCB design?
« on: Sun, 27 November 2016, 19:52:01 »
Hello!
I want to make a custom keyboard, but my lack of knowledge about PCB is holding me back.
I asked around my area if someone can do a PCB design, there is one but I haven't heard from him for about a month... (maybe he's busy)
---
I want to ask if there is anyone who can do a PCB design for me, I will later ask the local manufacturer to do the printing.

My request is as follow:

  • a PCB that can be used to build these layout:
153926-0
153928-1
(I think it is possible, the differences are the keys at the bottom right, no stabilizers affected)
  • allow me to keymap as I want
  • the stabilizers are PCB mounted
  • 4 in-switch leds, able to toggle them on/off separately (used for indicators: numlock, capslock, esc-flip, numpad-flip)
    position of these leds are:
    • Left Control (Capslock), Num (Numlock) (as shown in the image), "J" (numpad flip)
    • Flip (esc-flip, layout A), "/" (esc-flip, layout AB)
  • Single color led for the rest of the switches, able to toggle on/off (all at once)
  • Under-glow led (can be toggled on/off separately from the "glow leds")

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you for reading!

EDIT: I apologize that my writing seems like I want this PCB made for free.
I'm offering this job, with a payment. If anyone is interested, please PM me so we can discuss this.

I've never seen anyone offering this service.  If someone with the skills likes your layout and wants to help you might get a bite.  But don't count on it.  It might help if you were offering something in return...

GeekHack is really about helping people help themselves.  You'll find tons of resources here for making your own PCB and plenty of people willing to check a schematic for you or help troubleshoot a controller issue.  But not a lot of volunteers to do the whole thing for you.  That's not really what we do (in my limited experience).

Designing a PCB is a lot of work and involves a little trial & error.  Sometimes there's a fatal flaw in the design that only shows up after samples are made & tested.  You might honestly be better off just learning to do it yourself.

Do you really need a PCB for this?  Have you considered hand-wiring to a Teensy controller?  That could be an option!

Yea handwiring a keyboard isn't so bad.. because they're all nice and in a row..

So when you solder, line up the wires in front of you, and it goes quickly.

the only thing I can offer them is payment. (did my first post seem like I want my PCB made for free? :( )
I should have written this as a "job" instead of a "request"  :-X

I know it's a lot of work and learning it will take a fair amount of time and I feel like my job is taking all of my time (maybe I'm just stressed).

I have actually finished a handwired keyboard, you can find it here: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=84032.0 (I'm typing with it right now)
but it has problems like: sometimes the keys didn't register, they worked again after I pull the cable a bit, maybe my wiring is just bad and my solder is not good either. I think this problem can be solved by using a real PCB (since they're more stable)

Hi Tom,

I canŽt help you directly with this task but why dont you ask in other pcb forums? F.e. there the EEVblog, mikrocontrollers..... Maybe youŽll find someone there. If you dont get help i would start with a simple freeware for PCB like EAGLE, if you have an edu-E-Mail you will even get a freeware with all features. To get started i would visit the guided tour: http://cadsoft.io/tour/. If you have problems take a look in the FAQ, Blog or  EAGLE communities.

Best regards,

Hello, DrOizo!
Thank you for your kind answer!

I have decided to wait for the The Banana Split 60 PCB, the recent changes made the PCB pretty close to what I want  :D

Best Regards.
