Daily Switching from Ergodox to Regular Keyboard

Hello Guys,

Anyone here daily switch from ergodox to regular keyboard daily? I was thinking of an ergodox for work and when I get back home just simply use my other standard layout keyboards. Anyone here do that and does it feel weird/how long does it take to adapt to it? I know it varies by person but wanted to get a good idea.

When I borrowed a friend's ergodox for a trial run, I was switching as I was using the dox at home and an HHKB at work. Took me about two weeks of daily use to adjust to the ergodox and return to my normal typing speed. On the flipside, I've been going from VE.A to standard board for the last month or so, and that only took about two days for me to fully adjust to.

The VE.A should be the easier switch

The ergodox, due to being ortholinear, requires a few keys to be pressed by different fingers than on a staggered layout. This change + the amount of time I've use an ergodox means I never really type as fast on it but the difference is only about 5-7wpm so overall not that bad.

I type on my GH-122 battleship at work all day.  I built it specifically with work in mind.

Then I come home and type on my steel Gen 1 ErgoDox.  The stagger vs columnar layouts don't bother me, but I have a pretty standard "QWERTY" layout on both boards so it's an easy transition.  I mean, it's just as easy to develop muscle memory on two keyboards as it is on one.  My typing accuracy is around 95% for the first hour or two after I switch.

I have an Infinity Dox that I originally planned to use at work.  But after building it I didn't feel comfortable leaving it at work overnight or carrying it back and forth every day.  So it's kind of in a holding pattern at the moment.  I could realistically make the switch back to staggered rows at home or columnar Dox at work at any time.  Options are nice.

I've had no problems switching between the two. Whenever my arms are farther than normal, Ergodox muscle memory kicks in. Had problems switching from Ergodox to VE.A because of this.

Switching back and forth shouldn't be a problem.

I do that sometimes, it takes me about 15 minutes to adjust. That being said I have used ErgoDox exclusively as my daily driver for almost 2 years.

No problem here. Actually, the more similar the keyboards get, the worse is switching between them.

Thank you very much for your reply guys. I see it is possible and easier as long as I get a standard QWERTY layout for an ergodox. Just for the long run at work they seems like a better option to me for my hands. Although aesthetically I prefer the regular keyboar layout at home X) . Why I wanted to know if I could do both. Thanks!

The most simple solution is to buy 2x Ergodox..

i use a tented ergodox at work, and an ansi 60% at home. the reasoning being that i'm typing and such at work for like hours a day, so it's important to be ergonomic. i use an ansi board at home because while i still type text, i'm extremely used to the layout for gaming. anything else feels bizarre.

i had the same concern as you before i bought the ergodox, but 4 months on, i realise that the layout of the ergodox is so different to a regular layout, that my hands almost treat them as two separate methods of inputting text.

ironically, i found that i hated DSA profile caps so much on my ergodox that i didn't feel comfortable on it until i got a set of cherry profile caps for it
