About

KAM Sewing Tin is a novelty-heavy keycap set inspired by cookie tins filled with sewing supplies.
I’m a big fan of butter cookies (the swirly ones are the best), and I also love to sew.

The original idea I had was a sewing-themed set with all sorts of sewing tools. When thinking about the
colour scheme, I remembered the classic blue Danish butter cookie tin, and decided to combine the themes.

This is my first keyset design, I'm really excited to share it with you all and to refine it with your feedback!

GB will run from November 9th to December 9th!

Kits

I wanted to provide both flexible kitting options (mods + alphas) and simple base kit options, plus
add-ons that can be combined with either.

Please let me know any comments, feedback or requests about kitting either here or in the IC form!

You can view all kits as an imgur album here.

Base kits - mixed and novelty
All-in-one kits that provide support for common TKL, 75%, 65% and 60% layouts.

Click "more" to see the rest of the kits!

More
Alphas, Alternate numrow, and Colevrak

TKL mods - text, mixed, and novelty
With alphas, supports TKL, 75%, 65%, 60% and HHKB. Includes alpha-coloured spacebars, F13 and stepped capslock cookie.

Spacebars, Numpad, and ISO
Combine with either a base kit or alphas + mods. Spacebars contains a 2nd B for Alice boards.

NorDe and Yellow Accents (Added September 17th)
NorDe kit created using this guide by Miguel Farah, thank you for the resource!
Yellow accent kit contains spacebars in common sizes plus accent arrow keys. 2c/2.25c/2.75c can be used for Alice bars plus 40s, double 2c is for ergo/ortho, double 2.25c for Whimsy, and double 1.5c is for split ortho boards.

Ergo, Ortho, and 40s
When combined with alphas or a base kit:
- the ergo kit supports Ergodox, Boardwalk, Sol
- the ortho kit supports Moonlander, Planck, Preonic, Lily58, Iris, Sofle, Corne, Ergodash
- the 40s kit supports Minivan, JD40, JD45, UT47.2, prime_e, dimple, whimsy

Note: These kits only have a novelty variant right now, as the gradient means text mods are a lot less flexible,
despite the uniform profile. Let me know if you'd like to see text mods variants for these kits!

Cookies and Buttons
For a macropad, macro column, or to just to have more of them! Also, cookie coloured versions 🍪

Tailor

To make it easier to visualise the different options and work out what kits you need, I made the Tailor:
an interactive website that lets you explore how Sewing Tin can look on different keyboards.

You can try it out here: https://kamsewingtin.com/#tailor

Colours and Samples

The set has a blue gradient to reflect the shininess of the tin. The numrow is cookie-coloured
as a fun way to incorporate and highlight the cookie colour against the vertical gradient.

Note: the colours are not an exact match to the tin. Because of the shininess, the tin looks
very different depending on the lighting and environment and has a vibrancy that can’t be captured
in matte plastic.

See below for a photo from Keyreative of the samples. Am holding off on assessing the colours until
I receive the samples in person (being shipped to me now) - will post more photos then!

More

Pantone chips and KAT Alpha keycap (Keyreative stock white)
Please ignore how the pins are pushed in to the pincushion.

Deskmats

Design 1 - Cookie Parade (rendered with J-02 by ProtoTypist)
I had the idea for this deskmat really early on while designing this set - cookies walking together,
the swirly cookie leading the way with a needle as a flag, with cute expressions and poses! I tried
to give each cookie their own personality and mood (hang in there pretzel ;___; ).

This deskmat will be available in both 900x400mm as well as a smaller 600x350mm size.

Design 2 - Sewing Tools
Since the Cookie Parade deskmat is mostly plain, for the second deskmat I wanted to design a tiling
pattern, and capture the other main theme of the set, sewing. Will be available in 900x400mm
size in both yellow and blue!

Artisan Box

I've designed a "Sewing Tin" artisan box to match the set, you can see pictures of the prototypes below!
It has a 3D printed body and engraved acrylic lid.

We are partnering with P3D Store to produce these boxes - they will be available for purchase as part of a small
group buy running at the same time as the keyset group buy. You'll be able to select from all of P3D Store's in-stock filament
and acrylic colours. The box will be available in 2 sizes (12 slot and 21 slot) and 3 maximum artisan heights (17mm, 21mm, 30mm).

Thanks Jake from P3D Store for making these samples, and anEmptyJarOfNutella for the original suggestion!

More photos here.

I also previously designed a fully 3D printed version of the box. This will not be available for purchase, but I plan to
make the files available for personal use for those who join the keyset group buy. Details TBD!

Collaborations

I'm super excited to be partnering with these awesome makers on Sewing Tin themed cables and artisans!

Cable Collaboration: Cookie Cables are making matching USB and TRRS cables in tin blue and cookie yellow!

Artisan Collaborations:
- Bowbie Keycaps
- Crafted By Annie
- Cantoclicks
- klaykaps
- meof caps
- Miroticaps
- Myth Caps
- n.Na works
- okeydokey studio
- shirouu.kaps

You can see some little doodles introducing each collaboration here!

THOK Encoder Knobs

THOK has created these "button" encoder knobs to match Sewing Tin!
Available in Mellow Yellow (powder coated yellow brass matched to the set) and Brass Gold (clear coated natural brass), combined MOQ 100. Pricing TBD.

I think they're asking you to hide the images and make them reveal with a button ( {hide} insert images here, use the correct brackets unlike me {/hide} ). It's a little hard to scroll from the amount of kitting, but not the end of the world

Nicely made IC and very interesting kits and color.
For Ergo kits, need support for 1.5u bottom row and 1u inner columns at the very least.
will be following this IC closely. GLWIC!

Edit: forgot to say, I'd like to have text mods but understandable that it will be hard with the gradient.

This should be possible! To make sure I add it to the right kit(s), what keyboard(s) do you need it for?

edit: I've been told they are for the Corne (thanks Matt!) so will put them in the ortho kit.

Thank you to whoever pointed out the mistake in the novelty base kit right shift in the IC form (bottom one it should be 1.75u not 1.25u) - sorry about that!
I will fix that ASAP and follow up with more kitting updates (from IC feedback/this thread) later on. 💙

(And thank you for all the sweet comments in this thread! I'm reading each one and appreciate them all - I'm not quoting them to keep the thread easier to read, but I am reading them all!)

This is so cute and nostalgia!! My mom uses tins to store medical supplies instead of sewing supplies (we had the red square tins that are used for egg rolls) :)

This may be a stretch but can we also include some alice/arisu style boards in the tailor? 🙏

This may be a stretch but can we also include some alice/arisu style boards in the tailor? 🙏

GLWIC!

Thank you! 💙

Unfortunately the Tailor doesn't support angled keys right now, hence no Alice-style boards (it just looks weird having all the keys be straight...)
Not sure when I'll be able to add support for angled keys, but I am hoping to get some renders on an Alice style board soon, at least!

I would have really liked a reverse set. Blue mods with white alphas. I know it probably makes the kit more expensive and at that point it might start looking like KAT Great Wave. It's still a beautiful set regardless. GLWIC :)

Hmm, did you mean white mods with blue alphas? 😅
I do really like the look of white-on-blue mods for the sewing themed mods - I feel that it captures the sewing tin vibe better than blue-on-white mods would, if that makes sense. But yeah, thanks for the comment!

While it is not prefect I think I am totally happy if we use similar layout as QMK Configurator:
269039-0

It will help visualizing (to an extent) of what it could look like and most importantly it would be nice to use Tailor to figure out which kit(s) are needed -- that's my favorite feature of Tailor  :thumb:

Ooh, thanks for that suggestion/image! I'll have another go at adding Alice support with a layout more similar to that one :thumb: It'll take some time to add it, will post here once it's done.

It'll probably go live at the same time as I make the first round of kitting updates. I got a request to move the 2nd Alice B to spacebars from alphas so that you can cover an Alice board with a base kit + spacebars (rather than having to do TKL mods + alphas + spacebars).

aaaah thank you for the comments so far, everyone!! 💙

wait i love this colourway, this is very cute. but please optimize your pictures since this is kam kitting,  it's killing me

eek! could you explain a bit more about optimizing the pictures, please? are they taking a long time to load for you?

the individual image files are <200kb for kits and <1mb for renders, i can hide some of the images in "more" tag maybe

not what hakatype said. they load fine now, thank you for bothering!

OK! I've been reading all of the IC feedback, and I'm here with a first round of minor kitting updates to address some of the feedback/requests. Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions in the IC form and in this thread!
- 2nd B removed from alphas and added to spacebars kit. This allows Alice users to cover their board with a base kit + spacebars.
- Blue 6.25u spacebar removed from TKL mods kits and 40s kit, added to alphas. I noticed there were many people interested in combining a base kit with TKL mods or 40s, or mixing and matching multiple TKL mods kits - this removes a duplicate spacebar for them while keeping the same compatibility for those who just want alphas + TKL mods/40s. This is also more consistent with other KAT/KAM kitting.
- Ergo kit: Extra keys added to support Boardwalk and Sol
- Ortho kit: 2 x 1.5c spacebars in blue added for Corne and similar keyboards
- 40s kit: 2nd 2.25c spacebar in blue and white added for Whimsy. yellow accent backspaces in 1.5u and 1.75u added
- Alternate numrow kit: added dark blue backspaces
- Numpad kit: added dark blue keys as an alternative to the yellow keys

There were some requests for larger changes or new kits (e.g. international support, yellow accents/spacebars) - I’m thinking about these and waiting for more feedback before adding completely new kits. I’ve also tweaked the brown legend colour on the butter yellow keys in the kit images to be more accurate (slightly more reddish/saturated).

In terms of other updates:
- New renders have been added, featuring Sewing Tin on a polycarb Maja (by Vulcan) and a dark blue Cypher (by Cable Car Designs).
- The Tailor has been updated for the above kitting changes. Additionally, the Alice layout has been added (thanks summerqm for the suggestion)

Wasn’t a fan of this at first, but it’s growing on me.

I saw this set a while ago and thought the double theme (sewing and sweets) and the numrow accents were too much for me... but now I’m definitely converted and glad to see something different.

I hope the yellow won’t be too saturated. I think it looks great where it’s toned down with a bit of a cream/beige base tone. Most of the render colours don’t seem like a 1-1 match with the pantones, but likely just natural vs. artificial lighting?

Please don’t change the cookies kit for anything! I want so many macropads with it, and Coraline spooked me too much to use the buttons :-X

Hello! I don't have any updates today, but I'm working on a few different things (deskmat designs, finding vendors and collaborators) and hope to post some updates in the next few weeks :D Colour-matched samples are also being manufactured, really excited to see how those turn out!

I'm glad to hear the set's growing on people! Definitely a niche theme, but I've been happy seeing that many people also feel nostalgically about these cookie tins.

I'd say the yellow is definitely on the pastel side, but more of an orange/yellow then a cream/beige.

I definitely want to make sure that people can be confident about the colours in the set when thinking about joining the GB. I'm buying a lightbox to take better quality photos of the colour-matched samples, and also hope to get full prototype sets made before GB so you can see the entire set on a keyboard.

I'm concerned to hear the render colours don't seem like a match - could I ask what you're comparing them to, and if there's specific things that seem off? The renders were colour-matched to a physical Pantone fan. Like you mentioned, there are a bunch of different factors that affect the colours (the renders themselves use different lightings, as well as the monitor and lighting you're using to look at the render) but they should be pretty close.

If you're comparing them to the photos of the Pantone fans/swatches, this is less accurate than a physical pantone book - when I took the photos, the colours already looked a bit different after being photographed, and there's differences between the different photos too...I included them since I still thought they'd be helpful, but I'm hoping that the lightbox helps with this problem.

And noted for the cookies kit! It's been much more popular in the IC than I expected as well, it's definitely here to stay :D

Ah, I wouldn't worry about it! The render lighting just has a warmer tone than the photos you took, and the shadows in the renders just make the gradient look a little more subtle compared to the what we see in raw Pantones. If you're already waiting on colour-matched samples though, that's really what matters as far as giving an accurate representation is concerned! Really nice to see that you're doing that well ahead of time, too :)

Hell yes.

The work you've put into this set is more than enough reason for me to keep an eye on it. Now I'll just cross my fingers that Keyreative doesn't drop the ball on this one...
