I don't like my G500 as much as my Mx518 (might as well be the standard for mice), but it's a damn good mouse.

I'm about to throw this G400 out my window, lets hope the G500 is better...

I love the weights - it does remember me the MS SideWinder. Cheaper than the ms mouse, seems to be a good buy ...

By the way, there is any open source mouse project out there or here in the forum?

I can vouch for the g500. I've had it for over a year and it's been amazing. Also Logitech has awesome support and will send you a new mouse if you somehow break it.

Vouch Logitech's great support. My first G9x started having issues several months after I had it and they sent me one np :)

Personally not a fan of the G500, but that is just me. Logitech support though is great. They really honor their warranties.

the G500 is pretty decent. I picked one up for $32 a couple months ago and the only things i don't like about it are the scroll wheel and the not centered laser.

I absolutely love the G500 and G400, and I use them for different types of games. My current G500 is my second one, the first one the left click started to double-click (seems to be a common issue) but as long as you're under warranty, they'll just send you a brand new one for free as long as you provide proof and it's under warranty. Feels so good.

I'm not a fan of the laser, because it has the +/- 5% acceleration when it costs more than the G400 which goes down to $19.99. G400 has perfect tracking...

Clear case of "fancy" getting in the way of "good engineering"

I've had the same one for 2-3 years.  It's my first 'performance' mouse (I'm not a gamer), so while I don't have anything to compare it to, I would say that on pure functionality, with the Windows driver / settings interface, the customization options are nice and it performs ok (despite being generally overrated/overpriced).

That said, be warned that some reviewers (including me) note some units give off a high frequency whine at extremely low volume levels that's pretty nagging. It's one of those things that's (annoyingly) barely noticeable half the time, so not really enough of a reason to go through the RMA process, yet bad enough that after 20 or 30 minutes of sitting at your desk, you sometimes suddenly realize you're agitated and uncomfortable because the screeching from your mouse has quietly been chipping away at your sanity since sitting down.  I've only avoided throwing it out the window so far because I regularly wear earplugs while I'm working/studying/sleeping/in-between-those-activities.

Also don't like the somewhat-stiffer chord, but that's pure preference.

Would generally suggest looking for something else -- e.g. wireless with a dedicated programmable macro matrix.
