For the last seven years, I’ve worked at a store selling contractor grade tools for various trades including construction, wood working, masonry, and metal working.
I didn’t have any interest in these things when I got the job, but I’ve taken more of a personal interest in it as the years have gone by, mainly through a DIY perspective.
But I agree with others, a job doesn’t define who we are as living breathing persons, unless you’re lucky enough to find a job that reflects your calling or passion. My job doesn’t reflect my love of music, books, computers, or vintage fantasy art. You couldn’t tell that I love German Hefeweizen beer but loathe IPAs, that I did everything I could to help take care of my mother in her final years, what my fears, hopes, and dreams are.... none of these things are reflected in my day job.
When I’m here at my job, I’m just another face behind the counter - Just trying to get by like everyone else. Like TP4 says, it’s a means to make money. You make do with what you got. At least I find interest in everything I do, even if I’m not doing what I’d rather be doing. 😉
