Rear ports.
« on: Sun, 09 August 2020, 21:06:30 »
So.... u know dat' dell laptop Tp4 got,  well the Rear USB port is right above the main heatpipes.

Was copying files to a usb-thumb drive, and it began to thermal throttle.  Didn't know this could happen to thumb drives.

Tested on different ports away from the heatpipes, it copied at full speed.  anything with a cable also ran fine.  The port's hot to the touch.. Bad design.

Laptops have USB ports on the back? That strikes me as some pretty bad design regardless of whether it's affected by heat.

They can very much temp throttle.

The plastic housing hides how hot they can get, I have metal USB sticks that reach about 70c/158f on the housing. I have one that got over 80c/176f.

Yea, apparently it's all the rage with these g4m3r laptops.

Rear ports are bad anyhow, tilt the screen and oops you just crushed a stick or port.

About the only thing I don't mind coming out the back is the network cable. Anything else gets damaged or damages the mainboard when it gets hit.

Well, there's the problem right there. Cramming too much heat producing stuff into too small a space, and you end up with all sorts of compromises and bad design decisions.

That describes pretty much every gaming laptop.

Uh, that's pretty much what I was saying :)

Personally, I buy laptops for longer term manufacturer support, and the ability to easily upgrade parts by myself. Pretty much the complete opposite of what gaming laptops have to offer.

Any aspirations to performance are reserved for desktop cases.
