Hoping to pickup a ASUS TUF or Strix 3080, since those appear to be the lines that were made at or above NVIDIA's specs for power delivery.  Also will have to pick up a waterblock for the new GPU.  I want to update my CPU and board, but the x99 platform has been a workhorse for the 4-5yrs I've had it - so I've been looking towards a 10700k or 10900/10850k for my use (Mainly use alot of Adobe suite products which is the main reason why I would be sticking with Intel).  Now for my son's rig I want to move him to the Ryzen platform as for him would be the best bet since he just games and does light school work on his machine (He's currently running a i7 3770 w/ RX 580 8GB that I put together out of spare parts I had lying around - the 4770 I have needs a working board but I might just sell that CPU or put it in a rig for the wife's CAD/Revit uses).

To be honest i would go for very low power on the laptop, and use a vnc or rdp to connect to the much more powerful desktop/s currently planing to rebuild my old rig (FX8150 R9-280) for folding and heating and building a R5 2600 + RX5600XT as my new "gaming" rig, given how little gaming i do nowadays should be pretty adequate. and maybe when dual C32 motherboard prices go down rebuilding my vm experimentation rig.

What do you have your 8150 clocked at, I used to get 41k PPD from my 5.1GHZ 8350 when I started doing competitive folding.

My current setup is obviously struggling these days. SLI 970's w/ 16Gb and a 3770K OC'd to 4.6GHz. comfortably. The processor is fine, that thing is a beast. But the GPU is long in the tooth, and for some damn reason I am CONSTANTLY having memory issues(I fully blame Win10, why do you need 70% of 16Gb for background apps Windows? WHY?)

I could either upgrade my current setup with a 1080 ti and 32Gb ram for under $500
OR
Get an entire new rig that I'll probably keep for the next 10 years for like $2500

Seems like an easy choice to me granted I'd rather spend that $2500 towards a new car right now. Or any car right now. Anything with 4 wheels and a roof right now. **** my life sucks.

I'm waiting on the 2080 crash to happen, seems panic selling has slowed, but prices should still continue to drop. Probably when the 3070 and again when the 3060 drops.
November/December should be a good time to buy a used card.

Other than that I'm fine with my setup, I may get a bigger ssd, and if prices plummet on them I want to switch my server over to SSD as well.

right now stock clocks, and seeing if the cheap motherboard will be stable with that, then if it does a day or 2 without crashes i may go and try to reach the 5GHz again although last time i did was with a 4100 and it did not survive... and i am not going the competitive route, i already had a 61k ppd rig but the motherboard fried (the dual opteron rig) and both use the same fury gpu so likely not gonna see a huge difference as the gpu was doing most of the work there.

I bought a ryzen 3600 with a b550 board awhile ago... and 16GB ddr 4 for now... mostly because my wife was using my very old i5-2500k which had the motherboard seriously considering taking a huge dump at any moment...

it is fine... coming from a i7-4770k but also fairly meh.....   whatever the NVMe drive is an improvement and I suppose the cpu is better... but all in all.. meh... so far...

Realistically how low do you think 2080's will go by Dec?

If 2080's are priced how they SHOULD* be priced by then, they will be around $250-300, maybe less.

Once the 3060 is out (next month) there's little reason for a 2080 to be priced higher than it, yes, the 2080 will outperform it (slightly) and has more memory but it's used and therefore lacks a warranty (unless it's EVGA) and is possibly not going to be as good at RTX. However, don't be surprised if they're $50 more than this for another 6-12 months because people are stupid and willing to over pay. On the other hand, AMD Big Navi is also coming and even if it doesn't match the 3080 or even the 3060 it will push prices further down on used cards. Basically the biggest determining factor is going to be supply on newer cards, that's what has kept prices high the last few years. Nvidia changed suppliers so hopefully supply will be good by November/December and if AMD makes more than a paper launch prices will tumble. I doubt it will happen, but it would be awesome to see used 2080's in the low 200's.

As I've said before though, watch for 70's, they get drowned in the supply of 60's and the hype of 80's. They could break sub $200 if you bide your time.

Me too.

I recently put my CPU back to stock (4.0 -> 2.8ghz, i7 4970HQ) and aside from the fan rarely making a noise I've noticed no difference in performance, Summer's going(gone?) so can put it back up in peace soon.  Rest of the system is a 1050ti, 16gb DDR3 (not fast), SATA SSD and DDR3 and the only 'upgrade' I might consider is replacing the spinning hard drive which easily drowns out the fan when it's busy.

I went back to itx. With school and life, I really have no time to game and focus on folding.

3400g, b550i, 970 evo, 16gb 3200, inwin chopin. I'll buy the 4700g or whatever they come up with if its 65w or lower.
My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

So, the consensus seems to be everyone is upgrading to 5900x at the first opportunity.. a very informed decision

well if you care 4.1GHz is the max that the motherboard can do it crashes at 4.11GHz even overvolted by half a volt and i messed up it is a 8350, still with the r9 nano/fury x overclocked i get 110kppd, so pretty decent chunk of compute, and heating 10C without turning the heaters on :)
and the gpu is physically a nano but flashed as a fury x, if you can get one for cheap those are still compute beasts, and good heaters.

so far my 6900k and 1080ti do a good job warming my desk area at home when folding lol (1.8 mill PPD out of the CPU & GPU running together). But the Fury's have been good compute monsters when the driver set is selected for compute rather than graphics in the Adrenalin drivers - I know it makes my son's 580 push 350k PPD when I set it up right on the undervolted tune I have for it, but I don't fold his 3770 since i need to get a better heatsink for it if I plan on doing that.

well i still have rooky numbers haven't, i. although i am a bit surprised at the performances of the 580 as if i recall correctly the fury should beat it in graphics, or i may have everything set up wrong, i have not even found the compute setting in Adrenalin. and a 212 should be enough for a 3770, no?

Yeah if I were to put a H212 on the 3770 that would do better than the generic Thermaltake top down brick of a cooler I have on it now (bought it as a better option  over the Intel stock cooler).  I would put the CoolerMaster 120mm AiO I have but I'm having trouble finding the Intel mounting hardware I had for it - I used it on a Phenom II x6 1055t I originally had in my son's machine, so it still has the AM3+ mounting bracket on it lol.

i think coolermasters AIO are rebranded asetek so at worse finding a used bracket should be cheap, and maybe even easy

DELID makes a bigger difference than the choice in cooler.
on new intel yeah, on amd/old soldered intel, not nearly as much and it is much harder as it is soldered if i recall correctly intel stopped using soldered ihs with skylake so the 3770 is way before that, and all high power amd parts are soldered, and going from stock-ish to a h212/120 AIO will likely result in a bigger difference, true that if you go from an nhd14 to an nhd15 you may look at better results deliding, depend on what you have and where you are going.
on an other subject i tried compute mode and got 4 more kppd now at 114k... total for the house at about 176kppd, not the best but i guess it can't hurt nobody.

ivy was 3000, Haswell/Devil's Canyon is 4000.  Through 3000 - 8000 the IHS was not soldered.  I have considered de-lidding the 3770 and 4770 since it would be the first time for me to actually do it - normally I have had HEDT Intel in my rigs since the launch of x99, so those have been soldered IHS's.

to be honest my only direct deliding experience is on netburst era chips, a pentium 4 northwood that still ended up burning under overclock (4.8GHz out of a 2.4GHz chip if i recall correctly) and a pentium D that was already dead. and all of that was a long while back...

You need to sell that NOW if you expect that much for it, 3060 and 3070 drop later this month which will trigger another price drop. AMD is also dropping cards this month all in prep for the November shopping sales.

2080's are already hitting that number, not good ones, but they're there.

I'm really wondering if they can actually deliver the volume this holiday. it seeems pretty tight.

A thing I'd worry about is it being a pandemic good,  Just like electronics during the recession were kinda **** due to corners cut,  along with oreo cookies having less filling,  did they shave pennies off VRMs ?

Well I know my work has ramped up, we're due to configure 60k units over the next month or two for a major PC vendor.  So if all goes to plan I should be able to splurge towards a rig update on top of wanting to update GPU's (possibility of gaining an extra 30hrs in OT per pay-period).  New toys for the holidays!!  :thumb:

The 60 and 70 are more mainstream so they will expect much higher demand, they also are FAR easier to make. That doesn't mean they won't sell out, but it shouldn't be like the 80 or 90 was. Another thing to remember is AMD is also dropping cards, if AMD does come with cards and they don't it's going to be painful for them. On the other hand, we're still on shortage from last October and then Covid, both of which may have helped drive 3080 and 3080 demand so high.

Basically, who knows.
