Jet pens is the only way to go.
You clearly are not familiar with Goulet Pens, who are the best pen, ink, and notebook retailers out there. They do reviews of most of the products that they get, so customers almost always have some basis to go on, have podcasts and videos to educate people about fountain pens and fine paper/ink, and include a lollipop in every order. I also got a short handwritten thank you with my last order. Great people.

Um.... jetpens is "cheaper" assuming no tax, nuff said.

doesn't change the fact that you can read any review you like..

''

They both look like good sites and they both carry some different brands.

I was merely pointing out that Quarzac was being a Fanboi for Goulet Pens, when Jetpens is clearly cheaper...
It's cheaper for some things, sure. But, so's Goulet Pens. Case in point, the Lamy Safari is $26 on JP, $28 on GP. The Pilot Custom Heritage 92 is $247.50 on JP, $220 on GP. I checked a couple other things, and from looking at them, GP will save you a couple bucks on more expensive pens, and Jetpens will save you some on cheaper pens. But cost is hardly the only qualifying factor for what makes a company worth buying from. Goulet Pens has a much easier to browse website, at least in my opinion, so it's easier for me to find specific things. They also sell ink samples, which is just awesome. They have utilities for comparing nib sizes, ink colors, pen sizes, and all sorts of stuff. I've bought from both companies, and have actually spent more at Jetpens, because I used it for ballpoint purchases prior to becoming a fountain pen user. I just prefer Goulet Pens. They care a lot about their customers and the fountain pen community. It also has the benefit of being in a state that I am never in, and thus, do not have to pay tax.

I used to like fountain pens, but in 2012 I decided to go as paperless as possible, so sadly I don't enjoy writing with them anymore.

I think I may have to get one again. I have not written with one since i was at school. Always loved them though.

Whats the best type of paper? as when i jumped on amazon looking for a leather bound book to use for writing in and such, most said 100% cotton pages or similar high amounts of cotton. I would have thought high a large ammount of cotton in the paper would be bad.

Which ink, did you make sure that you tap out the air bubbles in the tube. because that often happens when drawing from lamy converters.

are you using the italic nib.?

hmm.. it's likely the ink.

But ah... make sure you clean out the nib, top and bottom. also make sure you're writing at a good angle.

Oh, and if you want to make the pen smooth out a bit faster.

Power drill.. attach some rolled up paper.. and put the nib to it.

Obviously make sure you're angling it at the "common" angle which you write.

I can't use HB now that I've gotten used to 2B... the soft led also lets you be a bit more "expressive with your letters".

HB is better for technical writing, where tight line consistency is necessary.

Been using my fountain pens for the last 3 months or so. I enjoy writing with them a lot more. I will probably use a pencil the next time I have to do measurements or something, but for now I'm sticking to my pens.

Going to order a lamy vista fountain pen and lamy vista rollerball pen this week.

On the side not, The ink I order came in. After cleaning the pen and filling up the converter I still get some flowing issues. I'm thinking my Lamy is a dud. -_-

there's suppose to be like a "universal" compatible one.. Where the entire inside of the barrel is threaded. So when you put a screw in, it can accommodate cartridges refills of "any" length

so I picked up a Lamy Safari with a fine nib, as well as one of these nice little Clairefontaine 1951 journal-things.  is it normal for the nib on the pen to be scratchy as hell and for the line to break pretty regularly while writing?  is there a break-in period, or am i doing it wrong?  I've tried holding the pen a number of ways, but the line will invariably break at some point while i'm writing and the ink won't flow from the nib, which is insanely distracting.  i ordered a 1.5 calligraphy nib and some noodler's x-feather black which i'll be picking up from gouletpens later today (seems that they're in town, nice.)

using the ink cartridge that came with the pen at the moment, also.

Are you in the position where luxury pens would do you any good? By that I mean, use on a daily basis as a symbol of "wealthy-status".

Because as far as performance... LOL $800, you might as well take a calligraphy class with that, and have way more impressive returns...

Probably the Lamy Safari.

http://www.amazon.com/Lamy-Safari-Fountain-Pen-Charcoal/dp/B0002T401Y

This one is pretty cheap, keep in mind you'll need a cartridge converter and some ink.

He means you need the "Converter" you can get either the z26 or 24, I've heard they both fit, but the 24 is a better fit, because it has the little nubs on the side.

Are you in the position where luxury pens would do you any good? By that I mean, use on a daily basis as a symbol of "wealthy-status".

Because as far as performance... LOL $800, you might as well take a calligraphy class with that, and have way more impressive returns...

LOLOLOLOL OMFG OLOLOLOLOLOLOL TROLOLOLOLOL.

ah.. lets see your handwriting... then we can decide where $800 would be better spent

I like biro's :( But i usually lose then and and up with those yellow and black pencil's :(

Pencils are great, the only trouble is hard pencils arn't expressive in line weight variation, and Soft pencils while expressive, wear too quickly for lengthy writing...

That's probably why they mostly use calligraphy pens and not calligraphy pencils..

Though you can practice with a pencil.

This has probably already been posted here somewhere but too lazy to search so I shall leave it here;

Quote
During the height of the space race in the 1960s, legend has it, NASA scientists realized that pens could not function in space. They needed to figure out another way for the astronauts to write things down. So they spent years and millions of taxpayer dollars to develop a pen that could put ink to paper without gravity. But their crafty Soviet counterparts, so the story goes, simply handed their cosmonauts pencils.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

Yea, but a "later" excuse I believe was that Pencil led could cause problems in the filtering machines "in space" or something like that...

Do you think it's a good decision for a bus driver to buy a 2 million dollar house?

If you have sh**ty hand writing -and- no where to show off the pen.... THAT decision would be equivalent of the above

Whereby, I am well within my internet rights to openly laugh at and criticize you..  :))
