Dream Monitor!
« on: Fri, 18 January 2013, 08:54:14 »
My dream monitor is the LG EA93. It's great but I cannot afford $600+ for a monitor....maybe sometime next year!

Anyway, post your dream monitor here or just talk about it.

As a side note I do not understand why monitors still have relatively thick bezels compared to televisions. What kind of sense does that make since televisions have built in speakers? Anybody know of any small bezel monitors available?

I remember seeing a curved monitor by Alienware that always looked good, not really sure if they were ever actually for sale though.

Not really sure about the bezels, maybe they know there are more TV sales and they need to be more stylish?

The one I own! http://www.benq.us/product/monitor/xl2420t

Would like a couple more, but my system wouldn't be able to handle 3 at 120hz.

I used to have 3 vertical 21'' monitors at work and that was so nice, now I just have 1 vertical 23'' and one horizontal 24''.

I think a dream for me would be a 27" horizontal with a vertical 21" or 23" on each side

I have a Samsung 27" IPS and love it. I would like something like what whisker mentioned, but for now, I'm stuck with a sort of crappy HP 19". I should turn that vertical though, being that it's 1440, same as vertical on the 27". Hmm...

The "OLED" monitors/tv's (kind of like the Alienware one) are definitely going to be a big thing this year. That's all they were promoting left, right, and centre at CES 2013. Would love to have one myself.

I want that new sharp monitor coming out. 32'', 3840x2160 and 3.5mm thick.

Too bad with a price tag of ~$5k it'll been in my dreams for a long time

U2410, an oldie but I think it's the best monitor ever. IPS and not too big. Anything over 24" I have to move my eyes side to side to see the whole screen so it's a lot more straining.

IPS for life

Not quite sure what you mean. Even on a small monitor your eyes will be moving as you look at the various elements on the screen.

If you're playing an FPS, you can lock your eyes on your sights and still see the screen edge to edge.  Pretty sure that's what he's talking about.

Yup, I primary play FPS and that is what I mean. For regular work, it isn't such a big deal, but I still really prefer a 24" monitor

Going to pick up an IPS in the very near future.  Are you currently using the U2410 or something else?  You also said you play a lot of FPS and they do fine with those?  I've done a ton of research and have it narrowed down, but am always to curious to hear more.

Yup using U2410 right now. I play a lot of FPS, competitive even (made top 16 in a BF3 cash tournament).

If I were to buy another monitor right now it would be: 24", IPS, and 16:10 because they are the 3 most important things I look for in a monitor

But are you actually sitting in front of it and using it as a monitor, cause pixels the size of your head don't sound very attractive.

I'm surprised I'm the only one who mentioned a 4k monitor so far, you people need to get excited for them!

I need to learn more about these 4k monitors, how would they be for gaming and such.  But I am scared that if they are amazing I may start wanting one.  Sharp is coming out with a 32" one and it is going to be $5,500.  That is insane!  But if we are talking about dream monitors...

totally not overblown.... LOL.... overpriced.... eh.... i'd pay $5000 for that 32" if it had decent contrast ratio but no more.... well... maybe 7-8 thousand if they made one with OLED

my 2560x1600 is too long in the tooth... getting sick of it...

MY second argument for adopting 4k as early as possible is.....

Your EYES have a limited shelf-life of "GOOD period"... It's an organ that deteriorates pretty badly by the time you're 40...

By then, it's game freakin' over... No amount of pixel awesomeness will translate....  :D

Same idea when old-rich people buy sports cars and marry hot 18 year-olds.... rather pointless....

I remember reading about this a few years ago (is definitely at least 2 years old now), great idea but the resolution was 2880x900 if I remember correctly so not exactly impressive :\ that said the curved monitor idea is nice, seems like it'd be good for stuff other than just games tbh.

4000p? for 16:10, that's 25.6 megapixels.

we'd need at least 3 Dual link dvi for that at 8bit, but probably more

why vu still using DVI? Display port is where its at!

Just did the math 4k is definitly a step up but all tech is going to have to take huge leap to process and display at that resolution, much less transport.

cries as he thinks about encoding times compared to the alreay lengthly time it takes for the best handleing of 1080p. And since HEVC is a POS right now thats not going to improve anytime soon.

Not really need any big leap on hardware to drive a 4K monitor. On recent CES2013, Nvidia just demo their Tegra4 (a mobile chip) drive a 4K TV when introduce their Project Shield.
That is only mobile chip. Imagine a dedicated VGA card will do. Driving multiple 4K display? Possible

Personally I am dreading 4K right now. I think it's too early to change standard already. Yes I am aware how much higher quality it is.
Why I don't like it... first, there is a huge problem with content availability. There are hundreds of thousands of movies that still have not made it to 720 or 1080, but for that matter there are loads that were never even released on dvd either (some of the best 80's trash sci-fi / horror will be lost to younger generations forever as it has not been released since VHS/LD a real shame). Now think about how poor 480 content looks like on 1080 display, now think about it on 4K it becomes the size of a postage stamp and when you full screen it I can't even image how awful that will be. 720 becomes as bad as 480 is now, and 1080 will only be marginally better. I mean, I don't even buy movies at all and I am still annoyed with this.
Next we come to PC use, gpu are not powerful enough to drive that high res for gaming at any reasonable quality level with a good frame rate. You would need power of like quad sli 680 to even attempt it for something demanding.

Someone has to make the first move. I think computer/TV manufacturers have to make the first move though, because people will buy them, then after than movie/TV producers will start shooting higher res content to deliver to a growing demand.

I definitely agree with you on the gaming front though. Most GPUs can't even push 60 FPS on most games at 1600, so 4k will be really demanding on them especially because it'll probably require more vram. I think it'll probably be at least 1 or 2 more generations of GPUs (GTX 8xx) until we have something able to crank out good frames rates on 4k monitors

I'm loving the 16:10 aspect ratio, IPS and the color accuracy that comes with factory calibration.

take a look at the new ASUS PA249Q thats coming in march should be your best option.

I have the ASUS PA248Q, what's the difference between it and the new ASUS PA249Q?

I'm loving the 16:10 aspect ratio, IPS and the color accuracy that comes with factory calibration.
PA248Q used a ****ty pannel worse than the PA238Q, the PA249Q is their fix for that and the replacement for the PA246Q because it will be 10bit and have wide gammut led backlighting instead of ccfl.

Everything has to start somewhere.  I am curious to watch the progression of 4k monitors and televisions and see where they end up.
my guess not anywhere real fast especially sice more people never embraced the BD.

BD?  And I was looking at the PA249Q.  Looks pretty nice, I haven't had a 16:10 in a while.
