You know how you is reading a book on dat PC, 15 minutes go by, and suddenly the PC fans throttle up for no reason. No windows updates, no virus scan, nothing.

That's them NSA making sure you're a responsible civil good human.

Thank you NSA for keeping we all honest.

Does anyone else struggle with getting slightly annoyed when you watch someone show others how to do something improperly that you know how to do correctly and well?

Intellectual freedom is one of the greatest rights a human being has, and yet it feels increasingly as if the majority of people just want to be told what to think.
Even when something sounds obviously wrong, a disturbingly large majority of individuals will assume it is correct because it's the last thing they heard. Too lazy to simply spend 45 seconds fact checking, just accepting a statement because it sounds like something that could be true.

Have we as a human race really become so lazy that independent thinking and logic is just asking too much from people? Have we been conditioned this way, or are we just fatigued by information overload?

This isn't necessarily applicable to all countries.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

You mean like how video games and the normalization of violence are un-related ?

How killing virtual avatars do not dehumanize the corresponding victims in real life ?

How we first made Arabs the enemy in games, and then quickly |2uss1ans ?

How we killed 3-5 million innocent Arabs and American Society- Didn't Care.

How we're planning the big invasion to kill us some 2-3 million |2uss1ans and decide, Hey, they're Nazis, because we're the Proud-Boys,  oh wait.

How young people shooting up their schools having absorbed the full culture where GUNS/Violence-solve-problems.

How we're supposidly Carnivores, because yea like any of you can actually catch a rabbit without Technology.

How we murder 80 Billion animals when it's scientifically proven humans are Herbivores.

Are these some of the Critical thinking / Intellectual Freedumb topics of discussion?

As much as it terrifies me, I am inclined to agree with you.

I grew up in a world where most forms of new "intellectual content" - or whatever you want to call the progress of research and education - were considered "preliminary" and were not generally accepted until they had been properly vetted and "peer reviewed" for accuracy.

In an age where  peer review = preponderance of number of posts on the interwebs  then the concepts of "fact" or "truth" become practically meaningless.

The destruction of  truth itself  is the goal of The Dark Lords.

"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

The Lords are not after truth.

They will say and do anything to increase their vanity.  Every civilization reaches a point where the wealth pump directly collapses the system, and the population cuts their head off.

Ignorance, Sickness,  are profitable.

Reduced to its simplest form,  It's easier to sell CocaCola, than Vegetable soup, and Cocacola is more profitable.

This is a Hedonic Hijacking scenario, but even if you make it more complex, a yacht, private jet,  it's the SAME broken process.

Man, I do not understand people who take pictures of every single thing that happens to them all day. I had lunch with an acquaintance and his gf, and in the span of just a couple hours she must've taken about 400 photos on her phone. She spent more time taking pics of literally everything than interacting with the people she was with. Some random dog, a bush, a store display, some trash on the ground. During lunch we had all finished eating by the time she was done getting shots, and we all sat around for an extra 25mins for this braindead AI of a human to slowly take a bite, then snap another pic after every ****ing bite. I was legit getting pissed off by the end, completely unaware time vampire living in her own weird bubble. The only explanation is she has daily amnesia and forgets everything about the previous day when she goes to bed.

She is just attempting to capture and audience in hopes of becoming a lifestyle influencer. The grind is real. Still disrespectful of your time and company. My spouse got paid to make content on Facebook. I didn't participate most of the time, but the time commitment and ensuring you "get the shot" is no joke.

in hopes of becoming a lifestyle influencer.

As an old man, this is a concept that is utterly alien to me.

I was raised to mind my own business and give people their privacy, in expectation of living in privacy myself.

Life is a journey and an adventure. It would never have occurred to me to seek "influence" in my "lifestyle" or aspire to provide it to other people.

This is extremely annoying, but I do update my OS and clear the cache fairly often, so I am assuming that may be the reason.

Wall Street Fears Trump Will Wreck the Soft Landing

The economy’s pilot has a new message: Fasten your seat belts

“On Friday, I would have said I thought the administration was worried about their policies really slowing down the economy, and they were trying to lay the groundwork for the narrative that they inherited a weakening economy,” said Michael Strain, head of economic-policy studies at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute.

More recent comments seem to have gone beyond that.

“Now, there’s almost a sense that if something goes wrong in the economy, then that’s fine,” said Perkins. “That’s making people quite nervous because if you get to the point where you are pushing the economy into a recession, there is no guarantee that that’s just going to pass quickly.”

Tp4 understands the human preoccupation with, the economy.

But real world, There's more than enough food to steal and eat even if one had to resort to such a thing.

The problem is, the economy is a chores list everyone has while locked inside a burning house.

It's not really going to matter that the fridge is stocked, or the dishes get washed. In less than 20 years, mass human death.

Mass Bio-diversity loss (animal death) has already occurred. The tail-end of the anthropocene extinction event,  this is it, we're on the last leg.

That bio-diversity is the true life-support of the planet,  HUMANS are the cancer.  (on again, off again self awareness)

I had a nightmare that I was living with an ostomy and that Elon Musk and Donald Trump ran the USA like dictators.
Then I woke up, and realised it was all true.

Or maybe I have still not woken up.

Or perhaps I have actually died and this is purgatory.

We have lived under dictatorship/oligarchy our entire lives.

Everything they were teaching in public education has been a lie the whole time. Nothing has changed.

The only thing that has gotten worse is Climate Change.

Literally all my stocks and crypto are completely in the toilet right now. Grocery prices are the highest I have ever paid in my life. My student loan payment plan was canceled, and my credit score dropped over 100pts over night. A family member got their Foreign Service status revoked and his training program was canceled. I still cannot find a job, and am now competing with 1000s of tech and federal employees who are also recently out of work. The food bank I rely on the have enough food to eat is cutting back to once a month deliveries due to budget cuts. Now my healthcare is threatened.

I have never in my life experienced a government that so negatively impacted my life. And so swiftly too! Straight up making what was already a daily struggle just to get by, much much worse. It seems like Trump's plan really is to kill off poor people.

It seems like Trump's plan really is to kill off poor people.

There is no plan, and they're going to kill everyone.

So how are you going to save money to move to NZ?

So week ago for some unbelievable reason, my glasses just broke, while sitting on my nose...
Simply frame snapped...
I went to arrange new glasses, which are coming today/tomorrow. I'm using a spare/emergency pair of glasses for now, which are not ideal, as made 8 years ago, but my vision did not change drastically, so they are ok.

This morning I woke up and reached for my spare glasses that I always keep at the bed table. I keep a bottle of water next to the table/bed, on the floor. This morning missus woke up earlier than me and for some reason she picked up my bottle and put it on the bed table. She put it between me and my glasses...
So, I reached, hit the bottle with my hand, bottle fell over, hit spare glasses, broke glasses frame.

So now I have no glasses, I'm blind as a bat and waiting for optician to call that new ones are ready for collection.
By the way, wife still breathes, I did not kill her, I'm an introvert

P.S.
Few days ago I turned 45. That day, again for no reason, I broke a huge carving knife (was spreading a butter over a slice of bread, I dont know, maybe I pressed too hard...), broke ketchup lid just by trying to open it and also a shower lever, just by rotating it. ON SAME DAY.

Now I'm scared to touch anything or take in my hands...

That is astonishing. I have had frames withstand strong and repeated abuse.

Flexon frames are obscenely expensive but worth every penny.

Bread and butter breaking a knife? WTF?

Probably had a crack in knife and the slight flexion caused it to break completely. Not uncommon but not very common either. I'm a materials engineer and I've seen **** break a lot

I may have pushed too hard on it while spreading.
That was one cold hard butter :)

It was a crappy knife anyway.

TODAY I broke drawer handle - I only touched it and it fell apart, is a second when I took it in my hand, in pieces.
I had spares, so missus is happy I fixed it straight away :)

What the hell is going on, why I keep braking things, or why things brake when i touch them recently?
I never broke anything, from toys in early age, till now. What the hell...

I never broke anything, from toys in early age, till now. What the hell...
Greed and Covid.
Things have been getting cheaper and cheaper for money reasons  (en****ification) but Covid also caused material shortages and caused/allowed companies to cut corners, then the greedy owners realized they could just keep making things with cheaper parts and keep prices jacked up.

For example GPU cards PSU's are/were failing early but one industry particularly hit hard is cars. Car mechanics are now buying 3 or more parts just to get 1 that works
GM used to sell good replacement suspension parts, they now just put their sticker on a crappy Chinese knock-off and crank the price, the same part everyone paid for OEM parts to avoid. Ford and several mountain bike manufacturers were/are removing features with an asterisk in the marketing that it was/is based on part availability. So you could pay for an upgraded model only to get a lower level spec model with a sticker. You really do not want a covid era vehicle if you expect it to last.

Anything made about mid 2020 when supply lines started to get stretched to 2023 in particularly is suspect in quality but some stuff still had yet to recover and likely may never.

This was one of my big takeaways from the Musk book  https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/122765395-elon-musk  that I read recently.

I was astonished at the cost-cutting described, and sometimes I got the impression that speeding up the production lines (and minimizing the number of workers) was almost as big a factor as the money.

Labor is the most expensive thing out there.

When people expect a certain quality, the RISE of China was largely due to $lave level wages,  and that externalization produced a certain level of allowance for material / workmanship.

Wages have gone up, you would still consider it slave level in american $, but that has to come out from Some-Where.   Even with improved pipeline.

The big move in the last 5 years has been South Asia, but there are problems there too because you're dealing with guys not too far removed from War Lords (really ****ty ones).  And there's alot of shady stuff like, Hrrm, so you don't want to paid in money, you want to be paid in military hardware.  Bro, I'm just trying to make tables.

Then the big gambling bosses moved down there, and they make the environment bad, because they absolutely will trade military hardware, and when you do that, you empower the local gangs.   It's now Mexican Cartels all over again.

It was lousy one, it was the oldest knife I had in my drawer, I think it was from Ikea bought around 20 years ago when we moved in this house.

I can show you my other two knives I use - one for sushi is proper Japanese multilayer knife ordered from Japan, love it, but only using when making sushi.
Other one, my main chef's knife is also good quality, not expensive, but proper one, Zwilling - Henckels.

That one was asking for a replacement loooong time now :)

Every kitchen knife I own is garbage I have either found, or ones previous owners or tenants left behind.
Except for the 3 Zwilling knives that carried me through cooking school. 1 chefs knife, 1 small santoku for chopping veggies, and 1 bread knife.
I had to get the chefs knife replaced when the tip broke off, but that was after nearly 12 years of usage and Zwilling honored their lifetime guarantee.
Although I constantly remind myself I need a few good steak knives every time I eat a steak and wind up using my diving knife to cut it.

Where pineapple knife

I can't eat fresh pineapple any more. It literally starts digesting the inside of my mouth.

The chef's knife near the right end, and the 2 paring knives to the right of it, perform 90% of my kitchen work.
