AFAIK this is mainly for sharing videos of rides (canyon runs in demik's case), and just happens to also be useful in case of wreck.  The dash mount would be for just trying to video in case of wreck.

Jesus christ, just on the way to work today I saw what must have been a new driver just driving right down the middle of the two-lane road then very slowly drifted into the curb and appeared to have blown his tire out.  Not even a minute later looking in my rear view mirror I see a car just slowly drift into the lane next to him and almost side-swipe a car, then speed away to cut someone else off to get into the turn lane.  There was also a guy in a plumber van going a whopping 20MPH below the speed limit in the left lane for at least 2 miles while a semi tried to ever so slowly pass him on the right side.  ****ing people.

This is why I don't understand people who ride motorcycles without helmets, because even if you are a fantastic driver you can't vouch for the seemingly large amount of idiots out there driving along with you.
