De-lid successful, replace TIM with gelid extreme as it's safe (non conductive) and superglue the heatspreader back on using tool that really inspires confemidence.  Eat while glue dries, put back in the mobo with the crappy stock cooler it was fine with yesterday and - it doesn't boot.

Popped it off again to have a look, found I used way too much paste so cleaned it up and now waiting for glue again :-X

DO NOT use gelid, or the glue..

The Gelid is worse than using AS5,  because it's so thin.

THe thinner the paste the faster the Pump-Out, whereby it gets squeezed out between the IHS and the die, because those surfaces are so smooth, there's nothing to grip onto.

You need Liquid Ultra for between the Die and IHS..

DO NOT GLUE the ihs back on.

Just set the lid 1 mm above where it originally lined up..  THen as you clamp down, the friction should slide it about back to the right place..

(the placement doesn't really matter though, as long as the side clips are firmly there.. and your mounting doesn't wobble.

Thanks for the 'reassuring' words :p

The gelid is much thicker than I remember AS5 being but I gave up on the glue as advised and stuck it back in - it's not dead, I can breathe again!

With one power on cycle per day will it survive until May without catastrophic pumpout induced overheat failure?  I was going to upgade my watercooling now but can't live with the whiney stock cooler so have put that off for a birthday treat.

Now to stick the old stuff back on, it's more than adequate but it might get a bit loud...

The pump out is a hassle more than it is detrimental..

because it starts at around 1 month, then gets progressively worse,  at 3 month you pretty much  have very little paste left under the hood between the die and ihs..

You can just redo it, every 2-3 months, but i mean, that would probably wear out the mounting hardware since that's not their design..

So.. I got liquid ultra under there for 2 years now.. no change in temperature performance..

The little chips are so close though and the gold dots even closer - seriously scary putting metal in there!  I was using liquid metal pads but on this CPU there was a ball of what looked like solder, think I overtightened the waterblock which probably had something to do with the untimely death of that mobo.  New waterblock where that's impossible is on my upgade list, but still considering bare die cooling - it's the last of the thick PCBs and the die is way bigger than the Athlon XPs I strapped big heatsinks on back in the day.

I'll watch the temps, if it's as bad as you say my birthday rebuild will have to be bought forward.  I can live with that :))

just put tape over the exposed copper.. it doesn't get hot enough to be a problem

Bare die is fine if you think you can get the mounting flat..  the issue is how small the die is nowadays.. so it's harder to get a flush fit.

That thing when you have some extra money so you buy something kinda out of budget to treat yourself for being so good with money, then realize you just spent your entire excess budget on that one thing.

This ever happen to anyone else?

Are 944 diys still popular ?

When I was younger I felt that immortality would be a great thing.  Now that I'm in my 40's I'm not sure the human mind could survive such an evolutionary leap - artificially created or otherwise.

Well, it would depend on how you define / frame immortality..

If humans don't survive,  then they're not immortal..

So is immortality the full composition of many technologies,   or is it only a perpetuation of certain body parts and not others..

ALL Tp4 can say is..   Tp4 is immortality - compatible..   Tp4 is as ok with dying right now, as he is with living forever..

This seems like the correct attitude when facing a perpetual uncertainty..

So if I haven't said it in a while, I hate eBay. Like literally I'm so mad right now.

Why would you tell someone to call a phone number when it is just a computer you talk to anyway and not a human.

Also pretty sure I'm getting scammed and I can't do anything about it until tomorrow because that's the way the system works.

EDIT: Now the power went out....ughh

Pretty sure defence (yes its spelt with a c not a ****ing s MUM) lawyers do this for every person that has ever carried out some form of violent crime. I don't watch CNN being a convict and all, but every time I hear someone talk about it they never seem to indicate that it is a good source for information. People be people, opinions be opinions I am sure her point of view would be different if it was her or her family that was the victim.

It's January, not a bad thing in itself yet always depressing as after the rush and hassle of Christmas (and added computer problems this year) I have too much free head time.  This means every 'egg timer' at work or quiet moment at home I get caught up in thinking about the past (if I were writing an autobiography last year wouldn't be worth mentioning) or the future, which isn't going to change unless I do so looks bleak.  This is not a new observation, it's something I've been aware of for years yet still done nothing about.

Trouble is as noted above I feel worse after being busy - success does not bring satisfaction, it brings boredom with worse to follow.  The good part (at least as far as being distracted from the big picture by anything is better than bored reflection) is in the doing but it always ends and without a boatload of money to start something really big (workshop, stack of aluminium, milling training... that's at least a year's salary) or motivation to do something pointless (think physical - in theory you can always lift more or run faster, you're never as good as you could be so gotta keep at it!) the boredom will be along again soon enough.

have you ever tried keeping a diary/journal? looking back at a well-written diary, if you ever feel empty about the past or the future, a diary can really put things into perspective into how much you're actually accomplishing and how much more you can accomplish.

So upate on  my eBay rant.....

Turns out what this seller is doing is selling the item on ebay but only after someone buys the item it is then purchased by the seller from costco using google express which then delivers it the next day and the seller just inputs whatever tracking information randomly since the tracking for the actual order doesn't exist yet.

So to recap, seller buys item for $15 from costco with free next day shipping using google express then sell the item for $35 on eBay.

At least I learned something, didn't know about google express until today.

At least you're not allergic to them.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

I feel trapped in my life and want to escape my current reality. Every single day I wake up the first thought in my head is how much I do not want to go to the job I hate, the job that is exactly the same every single day and steals 10 hours of my life every day just to spit me out the other end too tired to do or care about any creative endeavor or active plans I may have, just to leave me an exhausted and unsatisfied lump of fat ****. Unfulfilled and dulled by the daily grind without even a chance to stretch or breath out of pattern. Then the reality of the situation sets in, the realization that I can't stop and I must force myself to go do something that makes me hate myself for another day, and how I unknowingly yet willingly placed myself under some kinda giant thumb I cannot get from under because even though I'm being crushed, at least it is a shelter of necessity. I feel like a unique part of me is dying, or rather being poisoned as I am shaped into this boring unfunny zombie and there is nothing I can do about it in the foreseeable future.

But, you really aught to find something Interesting IN your job..  the job is the job yes,  but it's ultimately your responsibility to be interested in the job..   So, if you Must be there, as you've said,  only you can save yourself, by either Not going back,  or Being there and discovering any space at all to improve/ be creative.

This! I hate routine tasks but cant afford to find another job. Well, more like I need the benefits in my current job. Anyways, the only thing that keeps me going is do the routine tasks on the first half of the day and find other interesting things on the afternoon. I found my enthusiasm in keyboards through this, if I may add.

Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

i love KOTM threads but generally forget about them and only see them through Spy when they're posted/bumped

they're pretty hidden in that little subforum

Yeahhhh. I do try and make it a bit more visible with my forum sig, but then I like to put lots of stuff in there so I can't make it that visible :(
