What is your favorite fraction?
« on: Wed, 11 December 2013, 22:54:59 »
Mine is 5/8.

Expressed in decimal form, that's 0.625. As you know, 625 is 25^2, or 5^4.

So, 5^4 / 10^3 = 5/8. :)

Hmmm perhaps these interesting sums are related to the 'prime' factor of the 5...?

Hard to beat the 1.618 golden ratio, but I might say 1/3

Dividing things into thirds seems more satisfying than dividing them in half.

1/12 is good because it incorporates 2, 3, and 4

1/60 gets 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5

To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

I prefer C/D (circumference/diameter).  It works with any circle, btw.  And it gives this crazy number with so many decimals.  I've been working on it, and I've gotten up to 20 decimal places, with no repeating pattern.  So weird.  Ima keep going till it ends.

3/4 its just seems such a perfect fraction :D Not quite a 100% but so much higher than 50%

Its also like 50% of 50% added to 50%...

I've been thinking about this for a while, and come to the realisation that I do not have a favourite fraction.

I'll just stick to integers, thank you.

And the set of natural numbers, in an ideal world.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yeah, it's hard for me to pick a good fraction. Most of my favourite numbers are either irrational, imaginary, or prime.

That said, here's probably my favourite fraction if it counts.

Poor old "π" gets rounded to the nearest whole number which in banking terms it'll be 3 instead of 4.

I don't care for fractions. Decimal system all the way, thank you. It makes comparing numbers to each other so much easier and more logical.

Actually, they are useful for ratios of scale (maps), relative volumes / weights (chemical processes, etc) and pi is best described as circumference over diameter (the decimal version takes up too much space  ;) ), but I always convert to decimal for actually working with stuff.
