What do you dislike about geekhack?

The lack of nudity
Somebody FINALLY gets it!
Nudity would encourage you-know-what and this is a keyboard forum. I can't imagine the value of keyboards if this forum had nudity :)

Both keyboards and nudity induced activities require hand. Ha ha.

There's nothing I really dislike -- but I would love to see an integrated wiki-like area. I would love to see the forum automatically link words like "mx green" and "topre" to their respective wiki entries. That would be awesome. The only thing I dislike are the rants about "greed" and the generally low level of understanding on how markets work. Also, I am tickled when I see people complaining about the immorality of producing fake clacks but then openly discuss which Chinese printer to use for putting copyrighted imagery on keycaps.

Generally, though, GH is very awesome. Make a "what do you like about geekhack" thread, and it will explode with replies.

We already had a Wiki but there was little content and it was apparently a pain in the ass to maintain.

Otherwise I pretty much agree with everything you say as usual...

I think the previous wiki likely failed due to a lack of sso and the steep learning curve of its markup language.  Both are nontrivial problems to solve.

I don't know what 'sso' stands for, but I agree that the wiki failed because it was difficult to to learn. That's being solved by switching to a bbcoded series of threads. When I say 'wiki' I don't necessary mean an actual wiki -- just some way to store information. Also, no one has yet made a boob-shaped silicone keycap. What's up with that?

sso = Single Sign On.  Sorry, tech acronyms are not always obvious.  The fact that you could not sign into the wiki with your GH credentials and needed to have another account and such is what I was referring to with the 'sso' comment.

I dislike it when a seller adds new items for sale to an old FS-thread. If you have new stuff, create a NEW thread for frak's sake!
I will not visit an old thread with items that I already know that I don't want to buy, but I don't want to miss your new items for sale.

Add to the same thread. Update the title. Bump the thread. I think that's better than new threads. IMO

More difficult to scour through for relevant information, but it is much easier, for instance, to just go to your unread posts and see when it's been bumped, or if a particular person you know is selling.

And addtionally, nonsense titles. "buellers teh most aweszome SALES THREAD YAYYYY!" tells people jack ****, put [FS] and then the items for sale for gods sake. Missed so many awesome deals because of this.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Agreed. Well, as long as the title is appropriately updated and the thread is well organized.

Groupbuys...

I've never been swindled out my money like I have from the groupbuys here.

1) Prof's Phantom GB

2) Kboardvintage BSP GB

3) Team Redline DSA Dolch - Taking forever and a day...but I think this one will work out eventually.

In reality it is not the groupbuy, but there are some real shady people in GH.

I tend to stick to GBs that are run by people I know (of) and trust. I took a chance on sprit, but things are moving along nicely and he fronted his own money to keep the GB on schedule.  He has been awesome so far and not at all shady which is saying something given the language barrier. I am excited to build those boards.

ah, about sprit, how awesome he was, after seeing alixinhzai doing some housing for the BeastMask pcb (which he sells in GB), all the orders from Vietnam never get invoices and so, no words, no explain, no replies on VN order, what a great man

The thing about GB is that when you see many people in GH participating, you tend to trust the GB person. Is there a way for mod or someone to specifically say that this is a new GB by this new person, so handle with care - then it is up to the person whether to trust and participate and all.

Not at the  moment.  Group buys are not geekhack-regulated.  They are run on a "caveat emptor" basis.  There's no way to guarantee that any given person/group will run a group buy well or not, even out of the blue.  People with lots of posts have suddenly gone MIA in the face of pressure from dealing with group buys.  Everyone needs to decide if it's worth it for them to join and decide how much money they can stand losing (or be prepared to argue with paypal within 45 days).

Remember that this is primarily an information exchange website.  Group buys and the Classifieds sections are just perks.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Yeah and that's why I'm pretty much reserved to only participating in GB's with members who've succeeded in the past or where they can actually show samples of the finished product. Too many examples of members getting all excited, starting GB's and then bailing when the real work is required.

I like that he provides comic relief amidst the tense auction and for sales moments. Ha ha.

IMO
Not better. Just easier for the poster ... only because the poster is lazy.
For a prospective buyer, it is more difficult to see what is for sale .. and that also lessens the chances for the seller to get his stuff sold.

Sometimes you can see an old re-re-reused FS-thread that has all its original items edited away from the first post, with new items added have several pages of post that are not relevant to the first post at all, just taking up space, being a burden on the board and on the users that try to find out what in the thread that is new.

The same questions get asked over and over again.  Every now and then I'll weigh in on a Topre question like 55g vs 45g, or Topre vs Cherry vs ALPS, but the brown vs blue vs every other Cherry questions seem to never end.

I guess we can encourage people to use the search.

While this would be the logical solution, the end result is that new people coming in that haven't searched are instead met with long-term participants saying "use the search" and usually in a very grumpy way... which is quite a turn off for new people.   Really... it happens on every forum ever, because : path of least resistance.

Ideally the first thing a new person might do is check the FAQs/stickied threads/Wiki (or the deskthority wiki :P ), but what if you're not in the right section... you might not find something like the Simple Questions Simple Answers thread... and once you find it... its 190 pages... 190.  At least CPTBadAss has a great TOC as the first post... but I imagine the thread could use a little cleanup.

As to repetitive questions, I don't really have a solution, but telling people to 'use the search' never seems to work out well.

There might not even be a technology based solution... well... ok, maybe if we build some sort of device to allow for world domination and then we could release a tailored airborne infection that triggers a genetic alteration which makes people think for themselves before asking questions they could probably have found for themselves... but that might be a few years off.

In one newbie thread asking about Code vs Filco, I provided a brief view and advised the op that he could get a better and detailed answer if he searched the forum as the q appeared in a few threads. I think that's as gently and not off-putting approach that I can think of.

Totally agree, it's lazy, and a bad way to sell.

TBH, I don't even like the "clearing out" threads where you have to look inside to see what's for sale - if you can't fit the item(s) in the thread title, use more threads!

On balance, I think it's better to have more threads that can be easily assessed by their title, than fewer threads that can't.

Classifieds threads should focus on the items, not the seller.

You can get a refund from the DSA dolch if you PM DrugER, unless you want to wait, I got a refund  ::)

Have you tried PM'ing Prof recently, you might have a pretty good chance of getting your parts, however services are a hit and miss.

GG on the BSP, and like SpAm said, you might can get a refund for the Dolch.

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

You just need something more interesting to distract your free time.

I've been playing a lot of Path of Exile, and I barely check GH as much as I used to.

To add to the thread, I dislike how people like to beat dead horses in every thread just to be cool and relevant. Like yeah we get it, canceled.
