I don't think the housing's that useful.. I think the main seller is the rgb element.. and I'm assuming it has a powerful controller behind it....

the led would've been bright enough to refract off the cap, since the caps are usually white on the inside..

with or without the clear housing, the lighting effect would've come through..

I still don't get the clear housing craze... it's UNDER the key.. gaaahh....

and we already know clear keycaps are a big no-no,   experience says the keyboard looks disgusting after only a very little while.

What would be sweet is yellow backlighting - when you press a key the backlight colour cycles through the rainbow spectrum back to yellow :)

Or an alternative colour of your choice.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Edit: From what I can glean from the vid's the housing is designed to be a light-pipe w/ an embedded (Fresnel ?) lens on top of the SMD LED. Doubt a regular LED will fit.

I am not a fan of backlight in general. And in the case of Corsair, they have had issues in the past (and still do now on their second generation of peripherals) with LEDs breaking. Though these keyboards are currently very popular among gamers.

I dont get why the switch cover is transparent . It not possible to see them unless you are going to be like demik, typing without keycaps

the RBG leds are mounted underneath the switch i think, that's why there must be clear switch covers.

Matias introduced the concept almost 2 years ago, but they weren't really much interested in the gaming market (they'd leave this part to other companies who'd use their switches), but up until now no one did, so, Cherry copies the idea and gets all the credit.

Anyways, if anyone wants to release a mechanical keyboard with RGB backlighting this year, it's not really "impossible" due to Cherry's contract with Corsair...

Kailh will also release transparent versions of their switches very soon (which are low-quality Cherry MX copies) and you guys will see plenty of low-quality chinese mechanical keyboards with RGB this year  :))

And a hint: Razer is working with them  :))
