Describe the perfect keyboard for yourself!!
« on: Sat, 01 February 2014, 20:37:51 »
So if you could design the perfect keyboard for your own personal use, what would it be, what would it look like, what layout would it have, what features would it have?

Pictures would be nice, verbal descriptions are fine, I'm just curious as to what kind of keyboard is considered perfect for each person.

A 60% keyboard, with ISO layout, MX Clears, fully programmable backlights.

At the moment.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

A Model F that looked exactly like a full-sized (industrial or, better, metal, preferably sandblasted stainless steel!) Model M except with an additional extra set of function keys on the left, Windows keys, native USB.

They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.

I don't really know, right now I am really stressing about something like an LZ-GH/S but with a high gloss darker electric blue anodizing. (I want the anodizing to look like the KMAC 1.2)

With mx blues with gold 65g springs, blue stickers and clear switch tops. White backlighting with blue leds on the arrow keys, fn keys and wasd keys. Thick white pbt keycaps with orange modifiers.

Pretty much the most killer looking NOS inspired keyboard. I wonder if they will ever do another LZ-GH run? :)

What are nixdorf blacks?
Black switches with the original clear switch tops, found on old Nixdorf PCBs. They are generally known as Nixdorf 'Soft Touch' blacks. I find that they are perfectly smooth (much more smooth than normal or ""vintage"" blacks) and they require no lubricant (it makes no different to how smooth they are).

Buckling spring in modern metal casing (backlighting options if possible).  Model M black on silver label switch feel.  Metal aluminum or even better titanium case -- and titanium key options.

Preferably in a 104/108 key layout -- 80% board size i think would be ideal for me but not critical.

TKL board in a gun-metal gray aluminium case, with black keys and fully programmable RGB backlighting, with clicky Alps switches.

I'm tempted to build this but it's currently a bit daunting due to the amount of custom work that would be required.  I'm hoping Matias - or someone using their switches - makes this board, but I suspect I could be waiting a while.
Collector-of-switches.  Cherry: red, brown, blue, black, grey (linear), green.  Alps: simp./comp. white, comp. blue, Matias.  NMB: white, black.  Futaba: Cherry stem.  Omron: yellow.  Topre: 45g  Various: Apple II+, TRS80 Model 1, C64, Acorn Electron, ZX81 (lol!).

A 65g Realforce, doesn't matter if it is TKL or not.  55g feels so much nicer than 45g, but I mash my keyboard like an ape, and would love to have even more tactility and resistance.  Maybe one day they will make this...

Hard to say, really...I kind of like the idea of "TK"-size layouts, but I haven't seen any actual layout in that size category that looks right to me, and I don't know if it's even possible to do that size in a way that I'd consider good enough.

Failing the invention of a good layout of that size, I'd have to go for full size, preferably a layout with both a full-size backspace and big enter (put the \| on one or the other side of right shift, which I never use anyway). As for construction, I don't like aluminum. So: Steel plate, steel case (thick, not too big in terms of margins, but please, no sharp corners), thick PBT doubleshot keycaps. For features: give it protective covers over the switches (Azio-style), adjustable debounce time, high scan speed and polling rate, NKRO, MX switches with stabilizing pins (like for PCB mount, though this would have a plate as well).

Ideally, this would come with an accessory of a trackball wrist rest-- think iOne Libra-35, but better: it'd be the same width as the keyboard, with the padded portion of the rest done with the materials and construction standards of EK's 3-star leather wrist rest (or better), a higher quality trackball than in the Libra-35 with onboard sensitivity adjustment, and of course it would be made by a company who are better at making things than iOne.

I'm absolutely in love with the keyboard I'm using right now… Poker X, 62g lubed clears, Hammer TI case, GMK Dolch.

The thing missing for me is a better layout. Once I get a new plate from The_Beast (1.5x ANSI with a short r-shift) and a GH60 PCB, I'm pretty sure this will be my optimal MX 60%.

I'd ****ing love a kishsaver though…

The conventional 104 layout, with two extra copies of the top row at the top, programmable for macros and media controls.

Matias Loud switches.

DSA caps, possibly in Round 5 colour scheme.  Red function row, white and grey main area, and perhaps red or grey for the programmable rows.

A case reminiscent of a Wang 724, with big-ass feet and a slide-in for a guide for the programmable keys.

G80-3000 in pure white, gold logo, and tenkeyless.
White on black alphas, blank black modifiers with portal OS keys, white on purple (or blue) WASD, white on red Esc.
Purple (or blue) braided cable.
And of course a matching numpad. :D

It's all doable, but I don't wanna cut the numpad off my G80...

let's start with a poker layout:

1.  take it's backspace key and turn it into 2 1x keys
2.  take the left shift and turn it into a 1x + 1.25x setup (ordering is important, the 1x should be on the left edge, not ion the inside)
3.  take the right shift, leave the leftmost .75 as an empty gap, then 2 1x keys.
4.  add a 1x key to the right of left-alt (yes, this will bump the spacebar over; no the spacebar will still be 6.25)
5.  replace the 4 bottom-left 1.25 keys with 4 1x keys
6.  add another column of 1x keys ton the left side of the board (maybe with a slight .25x gap)

I can explain the layout in more detail later, but basically, it's a 'no-function-layer' board with a cursor block and macro support (i don't use right-shift, so it can go to hell); something like a mx-mini, but less wide.

ALL zombros wanted:  dead or undead or dead-dead.

This:

53048-0

MX browns with 62g ErgoClears on the thumb clusters, Esc, Del, arrows and edit keys. All switches trampoline and latex modded. Fully programmable and plug and play (no special drivers), custom layout (ADnW BU-Teck with some modifications).

Or for a more conventional answer, a GH60 with the Nostalgia set in a white case (ANSI layout with custom function layers).
Buying more keycaps,

Or for a more conventional answer, a GH60 with the Nostalgia set in a white case (ANSI layout with custom function layers).
Oobly, why you comeback to traditional? :-X

To look pretty and for when someone else needs to use my PC  ;)
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Will see how my mechanical adventures work out, in the meantime some basic things I'd like to see in a board:

- 60% with full hardware remapping and macros, or arrow keys that don't look ugly. An example of arrow keys on a 60%:

- USB hub. I'm surprised when some people say it's a useless feature, au contraire! It's both easily accessible and can minimize cables strewn across the desk, as some of the best peripherals are wired. That is, unless you have a USB hub in your monitor.

- Good-looking, minimal case, and a layout with standard size key sizes.

- Nice typeface, no-nonsense keycap design. Obviously they are changeable, but how many stock mechanical keyboards feature ugly font choices, seriously. It's an additional cost to replace them so it can affect buying choices.

60% with function keys and connected numpad to the left with stock clears. Hangul double shot thick pbt keycaps. Metal case.. That's about it.

coreda, that's not a 60% fyi. it's a 60% with an extra right column.  that's how there are so many extra keys

So a 65% I guess? As the right row only extends to the Backspace key, and lacks the additional Fn row of a 75%.

If there were half-sized keys we could fit arrow keys in smaller spaces  :D Although I think I'd prefer programmability to keep a more pleasing appearance.

By connected numpad, do you mean a separate USB numpad connected to a passthrough?

Hence why I said "usable" thumb keys :)
Ergodox thumb cluster is too far away for me.
Cherry switches also aren't really tactile.
