Cheap o rings, any first hand experience?
« on: Sun, 02 February 2014, 11:12:14 »
Saw those and it seems a lot have been sold.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150pcs-White-Keycap-Rubber-O-Ring-Switch-Dampeners-For-Cherry-MX-Replace-Part-/141094361977

Any first hand experience on quality, properties and suitability of those rings?

I got these from a different seller for a worse price :
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261265487004?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

And I did not like them with OEM keycaps.  They seemed too thick, so travel distance was reduced significantly.  These are supposedly good for keycaps that have transparent legends for backlit keycaps, but I've not yet tried them with those.  I would ask Infiniti--he got those for his Ducky Shine.  As with all o-rings, results vary depending on which keycaps you use them with: profiles and internal structure varies from set to set, and some caps have no internal support cross-bar things.

I've personally gotten a set of 150 clear orings from another seller @ $3.72, and when I asked about the hardness, the seller replied with 40A orings. After using them for a while, they do feel pretty soft with some sound dampening.

I've used them on Thin Ducky PBT keycaps and Thick Cherry PBT keycaps and I personally don't find them too thick. Each person has different preferences when it comes to switch feels however.

Ordered a set.  I'll skip breakfast tomorrow and I'm budget neutral.

I've actually made my own O-Rings by cutting up the rubber mat used in RD keyboards. They work well enough but it's hard to keep them all the same thickness.

Be prepared to wait 30+days for it to arrive in a tiny, square, plastic envelope. :p

20a - 30a is much better for dampening.

Cool! Where do you get such super-soft ones?

I often do small random purchases just to forget about it and get a surprise in the post :D

Yep, I bought from this vendor too.  These are better for backlight keycaps since light will shine through the o-ring.

Look at the letter O.  Take notice of the bottom part of the letter O.  There's a slight shadow with the black o-ring.

With a black o-ring:

With a clear/translucent white o-ring:

clear/translucent white o-ring and 50A black o-ring:

The black one is stiffer than the clear/translucent white o-ring.

So, will silicone prove to be durable in the long-term?

I like them small and soft.

OK ... so it took 10 days for them to arrive.  Not bad.  They definitely change the keypress feel and not yet sure what I prefer.  Will have to try it out for a few weeks.

After paying something like $25 for a oring set from wasd, $5.50 w/ free shipping sounds like a cheap deal to try something new, even if I do have to replace them once in awhile... :P

I ordered some of the clear ones and they arrived today. 150 O rings. They feel slightly thinner and softer than WASD red O rings.

I bought from the second link (i.e.  seller is "newdaystart").

However, I got the pack of 240 pcs for US$10 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/240pcs-Keycap-Rubber-O-Ring-Switch-Dampeners-White-CHERRY-MX-Free-Shipping-/261269381932)

I ordered these red ones recently.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/150pcs-Keycap-Rubber-O-Ring-Switch-Dampeners-RED-For-CHERRY-MX-Replace-Part-/251342922824?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a8534a448

What do you know about these ones?

Looks like IMSTO's thin red silica orings. Some reviewers mention that they're barely noticeable, but I don't have any first hand experience with thin ones. (only have the super thick type)
