RIP Alessandro
« on: Sat, 13 September 2014, 06:21:02 »
Hello Geekhack,

I got some horrible news and it's with a very heavy heart that I let you all know that Allessandro passed away on Tuesday night.

I moderate on the forum bit-tech and his grandfather got in touch with us last night to let us know. We have a post here over on Bit-tech http://forums.bit-tech.net/showthread.php?p=3680081#post3680081 but really we don't know anything about it all.

I thought I should let everyone here know as I know he used to have an artisan section here and posted here quite a lot.

RIP Allesandro. A real shame to lose someone so young, my heart goes out to his family and friends.

Hello all

I also moderate on Bit-Tech with margo and have been in contact with Alessandro's grandfather over the last day or so.  Some people on Bit-Tech expressed an interest in making a donation towards a wreath for his funeral but instead Alessandro's grandfather would prefer donations to be made to a mental health charity.  Should anyone here wish to donate then they can do so at:

https://www.justgiving.com/kidmod

(on Bit-Tech Alessandro went by the name KidMod-Southpaw)

Alessandro was always a nice guy, gonna miss him, he was the guy who inspired me to have a go with keycaps and even sold me my first novelty :)

RIP friend.

RIP Alessandro :(

A little piece of him lives on in GH, and in every custom keycap that he made.

Condolences to his family and friends - it is always too soon.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

To take his own life, he must have thought there's no where else to turn to. I am shocked that a forum member would do this. I mean, a forum in itself is a place to talk about things - anonymously even. And I bet you all of us here would be willing to give an open ear or eyes and even you know we can Skype and talk it through. I urge anyone even thinking about this to shout it out in forums. Use a throwaway account. But talk about it, please.

RIP Alessandro.

I didn't get to know him, but I'm saddened to hear it.

Depression is a serious illness and not something that can shrug off by "cheering up", like many people think.
I have suffered from depression (got out through therapy and medication) and I would best liken it to a drug addiction - an addiction to feeling down.

While I unfortunately never had the pleasure of interacting with Alessandro, I know his work and personality were greatly admired here.  I'm beyond saddened to hear of his passing.  As some others have noted in this thread, I've also struggled with depression off and on since I was in my early teens so these types of tragedies really hit home for me.   :'(

My thoughts are with his family and with everyone who was close with him here.

While this might be an accurate analogy I think it paints the wrong picture.
Often a drug user is helpless to their choices and a slave to their addiction; meaning they can't stop even if they want to, it's not as simple as choosing a different life.
This applies to both drugs and depression.

R.I.P with respect.

No matter how bad, devastating, soul-crushing and pointless everything seems...it's really not. It's just your perception (which can be changed) and perhaps your immediate surroundings (which can be changed).

Nothing around you is important enough to end your life over, and there is always something to live for, even if you can't see it right now. That's why it's important to talk to someone, to get that perspective.

You can walk and make a totally different life than what you have today, it's far easier than it seems. It's natural to move forward, you actually need to force things to stop.
