Geekhack only half loading, can't figure out the problem
« on: Fri, 07 November 2014, 00:17:41 »
Hey Guys,

So Geekhack is only half loading at work, just the top part of the site, none of the pages load the whole page. Can't find any other sites that do this and can't exactly ask IT to fix my keyboard forum  :D
Anyone have any ideas?

Been having the same problem in Chrome.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

Sorry should have given a little more info, all browsers tested, they all do it. resolved itself yesterday for about an hour and the started doing it again. Have to refresh tons of times just to get it to load enough to see the post button :) Only happens on the work connection, not on my phone or home. Nothing else is doing anything similar though.

(also apologies for the triple post here, was getting an error)

Oh works through TOR but don't like logging into sites without HTTPS on TOR.

prolly adblock or someting..

This happens on my phone when on a bad network or using LTE. So, it probably isn't ad block

It's not you, it's geekhack's poor DB performance issues. It happens in all my browsers, on all of my devices. It's 100% GH

FTFY.   I don't know why any large forum in the past 10 years would use anything other than IPB or Vbulletin.  I haven't personally used Xenforo, but I hear it's been highly regarded as of late.

Yeah, I've been getting the same thing this week for GH at work, and this happened in the past when the site was having issues.  My guess is that the GH site is taking a bit too long to serve up the page, and our work proxies are timing out and truncating the responses.

My workaround has been to use the downlevel mobile version.  Tack on ";wap2" onto the end of the url.  No images unfortunately.  Reducing the number of posts per page might help too.  I haven't tried that out yet.

Thanks guys, at least I know it's not just me :) so frustrating, I can't get my KB fix. Using the wap2 trick now thanks Naasfu.
Will try reducing the number of posts displayed per page too.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Usually when I have issues like this I clear my browsing history, cookies, etc. and it resolves the issue but It does not sound like it is the case here.  My main issue is that when I try to start threads it sits forever, then errors out.  I'd chalk these issues up to the website itself :(.

Edit, also probably related lots of pictures will only load half-way for me.

What are you set to?  I have this problem all the time, and I have each page set to show 50 posts.
Quoting me causes a posting error that you need to ignore.

P.S. Even if you can't immediately identify the problem, any acknowledgement from the GH staff as to the status of this situation would be greatly appreciated. It's called communication. Thanks.

I did read somewhere that the admins were "working on it".

Hmm... interesting...

A week ago it didn't seem as though this issue was as wide-spread as it is now.

And considering that it's been a week without a status update, I'd say we're due for one.

IDK... I mean, I've been working in an IT department for one whole week now, and the thing that has been made abundantly clear when dealing with a situation like this is COMMUNICATION. Even if they said the forum is ****ed and has to be shut down, I'd like to at least be informed.

Also, I get this issue on all my devices, in all browsers, I have 50 posts per page, I will try and go to default and see if it fixes the issue. Thanks ray!
