I am in need of a new router. The one I currently have is just a piece of sh*t, the Netgear WNDR3300N. I even flashed into DD-WRT v24 micro and it crashes everytime I start a task in my torrent client. So I was wondering what everyone has here and what you guys recommend me. It would be great if there is one that can flash into DD-WRT. I have in mind the WRT54-GL AND WRT54G-TM. Got any other recommendations?

I built a small pc from parts I got at newegg. The firewall software is IPCop.

I'm using a WRT54GL at the moment. If you want to connect another antenna, it's a bit of a pain, though. Adapters are quite expensive, so I bought a SMA connector and had it soldered to the PCB instead of one of the TNC connectors--lots of PCB abuse going on there, as the SMA connector is notably smaller than the TNC.
I also installed an SD card reader, but haven't actually gotten around to experimenting with it yet.

As a firmware, I use DD-WRT, but I actually don't like it. Tomato didn't really work for me (I'm absolutely clueless why), as did OpenWRT--problems with wireless connectivity with these two for no reason at all. DD-WRT works fine, though.

I have a D-Link DIR-655, it's really good. Expensive compared with Linksys ones though.

I've been using a US Robotics 8054 for years now. I had to replace the PSU once, other than that it has chugged along doing its job quietly.

I also use two USR 5450s as a wireless bridge. Again, they just do their job transparently, and I had to replace one PSU.

Bear in mind they have been on 24/7 for years.

Netgear DG834G V2. Had it a few years now and touch wood it's still going strong. I had to roll back to the last but one firmware because the newest firmware was practically unusable.

Before that, I had the USR8054 and was having some problems with dropped connections. I bought the Netgear because my ISP insisted that the problem was with my equipment. It turned out that the line was at fault, but since I had already opened the Netgear I decided to keep it and sold the USR on eBay.

Before that, I had a USRobotics USR8054, and it worked fine. After a couple of years I began to experience dropped connections and bought the Netgear. It turned out that the line was at fault, and I still got dropped connections. The Netgear could resync much quicker though, so I kept that and sold the USR8054 on eBay.

My line has since been fixed, and even though the chipset in the Netgear supposedly has issues with ADSLMax-enabled lines, I have no problems syncing at decent speeds for my line (I was told I could expect a maximum of 512kbps, based on being >6km from the exchange, but in reality I sync at around 2000kbps, so I can't complain).

here is an idea. if you have a home server with 2 empty PCI slots, you can get these and make your own router. It's a little bit more expensive than a regular router but it would be really powerful.

I have the same one, and am currently in the market for a replacement. Under any sort of medium to high concurrent connection load it starts to fail. With only a single torrent running web pages take 8-10x longer to load (tho when I can hit a speed test site the single connection shows close to 20Mb of bandwidth still available).

I'm considering either picking up an old juniper or cisco on ebay, or just building one out of an old linux box.

Thanks for all the inputs everyone! I just got my WRT54GL today and it's running 12548 mini @ 233mhz OC. Everything is great as of now.

Stuff coming in:
- 2x 9dbi Omnidirectional antenna
- Copper and aluminum heat/ramsinks ready to get it to 250mhz stable and maybe even 275!

Do you really need omnidirectional antennas? 9 dBi omnidirectional antennas should perform better when you're on the same level as the router, but much worse when there are height differences. There's only so much power to use when transmitting, so the antenna gain merely describes how much stronger the signal will be compared to an ideal isotropic radiator. How much that'll be depends largely on antenna geometry and therefore area the antenna can serve. So if you just need to give wireless access to rooms in one direction around you, an area antenna could be the better choice--they offer even more gain. Really depends on your setup, though--maybe your bottleneck is somewhere entirely different.

Remember to adjust transmission power for new antennas--you'll have to calculate (there are websites on how to do that, so no big deal) the new transmission power so you'll stay within EIRP limits (basically, transmission power per angle, based on an ideal isotropic radiator).

I spit on EIRP limits...

WRT 54GS, DD-WRT Micro, Dual-Biquads on a Elliptical dish. 24dBi.

I am going through bricks with a very high Iron content though, attenuates your signal to hell and back, hence the need.

Hrm. I see that custom firmware for WRT is accounted for but not much else. How about either full PCs or embedded hardware with wireless, running pfSense?

I used to run a full PC with pfSense installed (old PCs laying about, may as well put them to use, right?) but then switched to an ALIX.2C3 with an atheros-based(I think) wireless miniPCI card. No moving parts, low power consumption, etc. but most importantly still running pfSense. I have a high power wireless card as well, but haven't used it yet.

The beauty of pfSense is features and customization. You can basically make it do what you want. Want a router/firewall? Done. Want a filtered bridge? Done. Packages are also available so you can add some popular 3rd party software for more monitoring, filtering options, etc. All around cool stuff, and it's FreeBSD/NanoBSD based, so it has good hardware compatibility.

The alix hardware looks interesting. I am currently using ipcop on a micro-atx form factor which is still way too big. I may need to give that a try. It looks like it would be pretty slick.

I like 'em. I was considering a Soekris before I found the ALIX boards. They've updated them in the past year or two. The new one fixed some issues with high power miniPCI cards and some other things that I can't recall right now. The D series is now current.

I've got a WRT54G... I think it's v7.1? Whatever it is, it's gimped. I'm running DD-WRT v24sp1 micro. (Yes, I've changed my firewall rules to fix the exploit.)

Anyway, I'm thinking of getting an Asus WL-520gU, and putting OpenWRT on it, and hacking the crap out of it. See, it's got a USB host port, so you can have all sorts of fun with that. (And it's not gimped like the WRT54G is now.)

wow. the pricing on the Asus is pretty good. Out of the box it looks to support a virtual DMZ but seems to only support VPN pass through..

I need to read up on DD-WRT and Tomato and see if it would work with the Asus. Ideally, the virtual DMZ would be supported and VPN endpoint would be supported. OpenVPN would be ideal if possible.

Also, there's a cheaper version of that Asus without USB. I forget the model number, but it's literally the same device with the USB components missing (and even a list on the PCB of the parts that need to be added to make it into a USB version.)

My friend got an Asus but I don't think he's liking it too much because all the settings he saved goes back to default for no reason in DD-WRT.

Hi, I'll do this noob question; What would I need to make a Wireless router with a PC?

I'm currently ip-masquerading with mi server and hooked a cheap wireless router setted up as a bridge to serve wlan pcs. But I'm thinking of replaceing it because it doesn't work well, so may I expand the server somehow or just get another Wlan router (preferably supporting some dd-wrt like firmware)?.

I like the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54..even though it looks like you picked up one of the linksys boxen. The Buffalo has a smaller footprint and better stock firmware than the linksys/cisco. Additionally, it becomes rock solid when you put DD-WRT on it.

the netgate site has an alix 3 port with pfsense already installed package available. a little pricey, sort of, but would work. It supports openvpn as an endpoint and has 3 ethernet ports.
I still need to read more on the tomato and WRT firmware to make sure what their limitations are.

Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 here with Tomato firmware.
Rock solid stable for 2 years now. Bonus is having complete control of the band with and connections of the PCs connected to it.

WRT54GL with Tomato, but really anything that you can put Tomato on will suit nearly any non-N purposes. I'm still hoping that Tomato will be re-written for the WRT160NL, that happens and the GL gets relegated to wireless extender duty.

I'm running MikroTik RouterOS on one of their RouterBoards. Great stuff, their software, and the hardware isn't bad either. You can also run RouterOS on an x86 box and "roll your own."

I don't have any complaints. I get around 120 down and 20 up. Not sure if it's because I have a pretty great wireless adapter, this, or both of them, but I've had great results with it.

Currently I use an Asus Rt-N66U, it's WRT compatible, very fast, hard to bog down. It's probably a year and a half old, and it's been great. I run the stock firmware, but I always buy routers I can change firmware after some bad experiences.

It's all about pfSense these days, running it on a little embedded platform, you can get the APU hardware for around $200 straight from pcengines (designer) or minibox (us distro)

Asus - N900 Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router currently though i may upgrade to AC wireless eventually.

It's a fairly solid router mines one glaring flaw it runs....HOT! like fry an egg on it hot. I have an external USB fan pointed at it which keeps it within normal levels but without the fan it gets way too hot for a router for my liking.

u mean the N66 U?

I run mine with the top lid off, and it's on a shelf, so I rigged a fone charger to a 120mm fan to cool it.
