Any of you guys own Printers?
« on: Sun, 10 May 2015, 12:56:01 »
So.. I print @ home maybe 3 times a year..

But pretty much each and every time.. I have to refill the cartridge, or shoot some alcohol and water in there, and shake it up.. hahahaa

Which er,  printer doesn't dry EVER,  so I can use it the 3 times a year and not have to go through this silly routine..

This is for the I need printing NOW moments,  which is seldom, but necessary.

No COLOR..

Just black.

My brother printer was on the same cartridge for about 2-3 years. And it was the starter cartridge that doesn't have that much ink.

Laser ftw.
No, he’s not around. How that sound to ya? Jot it down.

Your only bet would be a laser printer. The heads on inkjet printers will dry out over time and there's nothing that can be really done about that other than alcohol baths. Since laser printers use a powder there's not dried ink to clog the heads. All you have to worry about is dust which can mess with your print quality. So either way you may have to clean the printer but a laser printer is going to be a lot less hassle than inkjet.

So buy a monochrome laser printer.

Yes. Laser printers don't use liquid ink they use powdered ink. So there's no pesky printer heads getting all mucked up with dry bits. Dusts still a issue though, so it's not a perfect solution.

Could you elaborate on the Dust issue.

Is it dust from outside, or dust from within the printer?

I can keep it covered, since I will only use it 3 times a year..

Dust from outside getting into the printer. Sometimes dust can get on the laser and mess with the focus, producing blurry text or so I've heard. I've never had a problem with laser or inkjet printers (until they die naturally) but I use my printer a lot so that's probably why. It really shouldn't be that much of a issue. Your only choices are really inkjet or laser and laser is the less likely of the two to have problems from sitting around.

If you only print three times a year why bother getting a printer? You could just take your files to Office Depot or wherever. If you print only a dozen pages a year it'll take many, many years to reach the cost of a entry level printer.

Then don't have emergencies or "'murgency(s)."

Then you have no need for a printer.

Or get an old printer from work which has its maintenance contract expired, but which is otherwise perfectly serviceable for 3 print jobs a year (assuming small to moderate print jobs, of course).

Bonus if you get toner cartridges and paper too!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Laser printer technology has been fine for 30+ years, at this point. 15–20 year old printers still work great, and can be bought used for cheap.

There are options for that. You could also get a router that supports printers if you don't want to spend more on the printer.

Ah.  This sounds like a smartphone-centric thing, which I have little experience with.  :P

For me, anything that is more than 2 pages, or I need it immediately, I don't print at home and wait until I get to school where they have the laser printers. Really nice & fast.
