New internet...
« on: Wed, 27 May 2015, 16:40:48 »
So it's 50mbps on my phone(5ghz). Computer doesn't have 5ghz. And lots of interference. I'm getting 20mbps... Lots of interference.
Here's the thing. Run a line from the router to my room. Or buy a wireless doodad and plug it into my computer to get the full 50mbps?

Tp4 is WIRED..   gotta get my GH  @ < 20ms

A new router + new wireless card would improve your throughput.

But it will not improve LATENCY..   <this is more critical> to gaming than is throughput.

what router do you have

Comcast's................
Better than AT&T....
I have an Asus n66u lying around. Just waiting for a new modem. Micro atx, don't have room for wireless card.

Mother said must be proper installation... Don't wanna drill just to have it reach the next room.

I'm not sure what you mean by proper installation...   If she mean "In wall".. Good luck, LOL, it's probably not going to happen then..

What less proper people usually do is route up to the attic, and have it come down through a hole in the closet..  then run that along the bottom of the wall..

Make sure to get good quality cables if you do this..  otherwise it won't take the heat in the attic, if it's a long run.

The N66u is more than enough as a router..

Micro-atx or  itx..    You should have room for a wireless card if it's micro atx.

Oh, parents.  I love having the freedom to run cables all over.  ^-^

Have you explored the option of those crazy power outlet ethernet doodads?

Don't have room lol. The Comcast modem is fine for now. I just wanna be able to use the 5ghz frequency.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo

Trust me, they suck ass..  I already tried a bunch of different brands..  You'll get 10-15mbps  AT BEST ..  doesn't matter if it's rated for 500mbps

You don't get anything close to that.

They're not amazing by any means. But I honestly don't know enough about them one way or the other. I just know they exist.  :)  I still vote to run a wire.  :P  But that's always my solution.

HunterA,  you can PM me the layout to your house,  and I can tell you where to drill to wire up through the attic and into your room..

It has to be a pretty accurate sketch, if not the actual plans,  the reason is..  I need to know where there's crawl space..

It's impossible to handle the wire in some cases without a crawlspace..

They're crummy at best, in terms of latency/ throughput..

As far as connection stability,  there shouldn't be a problem if you got an n66u.. (make sure to update to latest firmware, or tomato)

I bought one of these a year ago and it's a little flaky really. All of a sudden my connection would just drop for no apparent reason. No interference, not a problem with the router, the other wireless card (2.4GHzJ) on the laptop never had trouble with the same router, and all network diagnostics were error free otherwise. It would actually cause the entire USB bus to flake out on the laptop. I've been running with Ethernet ever since with no trouble at all.

Wired is definitely the best way to go..

There's also the matter of "consistency" when it comes to wireless signals..

Interference is Everywhere now that wireless technology is so pervasive..

That interference might not affect throughput,  but it introduces Jitter..

Now,  whether or not your Gaming-Skillz  is high enough such that you'll blow past these things anyway doesn't change the fact that  wireless interference lowers consistency..

I agree that wired is the way to go. In my case the wireless issue was definitely not an external interference problem from somewhere outside of my control. I actually think it may have been a USB 3.0 interference problem.

There are other research papers and articles out there, but this was at the top of the search results.

Conveniently I live 5 minutes from a home depot...
Also, screw the wireless. Apparently, we have a giant crawl space under us. They closed it off so the cat doesn't play down there. I'll just drill a hole on the floor and crawl down there. Or get the cat to do it. Nasty **** down there.
And then route up the existing hole in my room for the DSL cable.
My room doesn't have a hole though.. Not sure I want to do that yet.

If you MUST use wireless.. "bless ur cursed soul"

For AC,  it's only faster than N if you're within 12-15 feet of the router..

Outside of that range AC and N perform equivalently..

U mean the alienware x51 desktop ?

dude,  that HAS a wifi card..  You just pull out the one in there, and put in a new one..

Get the 6300N if you're gonna use ur N66u,  or get an intel AC7260, if you get a NEW ac router.

Probably in the BIOS or with Dell's service tag software, or just search for 5GHz hotspots. If you can see a 5GHz hot spot you have a 5GHz card.

Here's one that is 5GHz: http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=11417&gclid=ci6396wc48ucfzehaqodrzca6g

Yeah. Got it when I was a freshman. All dat doe was saved up by ****ing *****es and getting money. Last I opened it up, there is no slot for a wireless card. And I think the antenna sits between my hard drive and cd drive which I'll be ripping out of it soon.

Just pull that thing out,  and put in the NEW ONE..

Intel 6300, needs 3 antennas to reach max throughput for N66u Router, it's a triple stream
Intel 7260, only has 2 streams, for Either N or AC.

But remember AC is total ****, unless it's from a BEASTY AC router.. like the R7000

U mean the alienware x51 desktop ?

Crapware**

Always go wired if it's not too inconvenient.
Mother said must be proper installation... Don't wanna drill just to have it reach the next room.

Oh, parents.  I love having the freedom to run cables all over.  ^-^

Have you explored the option of those crazy power outlet ethernet doodads?

Noooooooooooooooooooooo

Trust me, they suck ass..  I already tried a bunch of different brands..  You'll get 10-15mbps  AT BEST ..  doesn't matter if it's rated for 500mbps

You don't get anything close to that.
I have one and I did a speedtest with straight ethernet and the power outlet thing.

I got the exact same speed (30mbps) on each one. It's a lot more convenient to just have the power outlet than run crazy cords all over my house :))

If you MUST use wireless.. "bless ur cursed soul"

For AC,  it's only faster than N if you're within 12-15 feet of the router..

Outside of that range AC and N perform equivalently..

I don't think the Alienware has a locked bios..

But you should update the bios regardless..

Buy on amazon just in case it doesn't work.. it's only ~$20 or something, and it's MUCH better than any USB thing u can plug in...  restocking fee on ~$20 is like what $3

Again.. they work,  but think about what's happening..  It has to FILTER out the other currents running in that wire..

Latency + Jitter..

And if the place you're trying to get to happens to be Across a breaker,  Cut that 30mbps in half.

Those are the antenna, they pop off and connect to the NEW wireless card you put in.

The ends are connected like a 9v battery  it's a little button cap..

English is not my first language,  I have interpreted that sentence as thus.

-The money you earned working at a garage rubbing oil all over yourself will be siphoned to pay for your replacement Geekhack experience Capable computer?--

Yea, if you're stuck with wireless,  5ghz is better because there's less interference..

UNLESS you live within 25 feet within OTHER people with 5ghz..

2.4ghz , you get interference even 60feet out.

Well, our old one is 2.4, neighboring people use a 2.4. Across the lawn, don't think they have 5ghz(hope not)

Overall, I don't think the Killer N wifi cards are as good as the intel cards..

The intel cards are much more stable and consistent performers..

I had the killer N in one of my older lenovos, and it had some trouble with various routers on campus,

whereas, my Intel 6300 was a slut and slept fine with everybody.
