Post a picture of your ideal keyboard layout!

If you could have any keyboard layout, what would it be? Post a picture (doesn't have to be pretty, doesn't have to specify keys that are obvious if you don't want to), and give a little description.

Layout could be as simple or as complicated as you wanted it to be. 1% to 2000%, ISO, ANSI or neither, tertiary, quaternary or duodenary legends, joysticks, trackballs, whatever you want. Of course, whatever you pick has to fit on your desk!

Personally, mine would be extremely huge. Because more bigger is more better, right? xD

ISO with big-ass enter key and 2u backspace, fun cluster on the left, one winkey on the right, screenshot key on the left, 12 PF keys on top of the F keys, full nav cluster and a calculator on top of and using the numpad, which includes an equals key. Bam!

What would yours be? GOGOGOGO

65% (Matt30's Steel Beauty)

I can't find the picture of the proper 65% layout I'd like so I rushed and posted Matt3o's board.

From Kaliet

More like that without the function row. and 1.5x or 1.25x on the bottom row.

Something like this :
http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/layouts/8d69bb56daf961db6d9a2d2ce7a67647

No idea what I would use the blank caps for, probably macro, opening mail or things like that.

8, 4, 5, 6 would be the arrow cluster when hitting the Fn key.

{, ;, ', / would be media keys when hitting the Fn key.

ANSI's got it goin on, I just don't know what to do with most of the function row. Also, tilde and winkeys are dumb

Not sure it is ideal but this is what I use now:
Primary layer:
102541-0
Keypad layer:
102543-1

Mine would be a combination of this (with multiple layers):
102545-0
And this (especially the number pad, trackball -- though I'd get a larger one-- and the curvature of the keyboard):
102547-1

Then again, maybe a touchpad would be better...

I've been playing with a couple of ideas based on the keys in the Hack'd by Geeks set - both of these will work with correct row profiles.  Both use UK ISO keys though they aren't necessarily in the right places :))

This one's mainly going for near perfect symmetry and general good looks without sacrificing usability.  The Geek Hack keys are break and delete and arrows would be next to the pinky FN key on a layer. I've also toyed with making it more rounded by dropping the Esc and Delete keys into the number row.

This one's going for a split matrix with a console style joystick mouse in the middle.  Needs the end columns to drop and I need to measure the angle I want, but it keeps breaking it in the layout editor...

Both of these would be used with a 6x4 matrix numberpad though a layer would work on the matrix one.

I'm very close to ordering a plate for this layout. I've been trying it with a cardboard prototype and think it's a winner.  DSA Retro caps give me a lot of options to reconfigure if I don't like any of the key placements.

After the caps lock key, the full-size space bar is the second most egregious waste of space on a keyboard.  My ideal layout eliminates both of those abominations.

For physical layout, I am really liking my ANSI modded AT.  The number pad is also modded to a 4x5 matrix, so I have a number pad, and dedicated arrows.  The F keys are now in the function layer on the number row, and the 10 keys on the left are used for other stuffs.  I have scroll lock there just because I plan on using that to control under desk lighting with it.  But I need to get a solid state relay for that before I can continue with that project.

Here is what my current layout looks like.  Bottom legends are the function layer.

102598-0

Though I have yet to try the Ergo Dox layout.  I think that would be one of the few layouts that might be able to tear me away from buckling springs.  Though if wcass has his way, that layout might be possible with M style (i think) buckling springs.

That's a nice layout! Does the AT PCB have pads under the stabiliser holes too, to allow this layout?

Here ya go:

102608-0

See avatar for cluster positions and angles. I have shifted some characters around from the original layout for various reasons, but this layout is now pretty much final.

Layer button pressed (Esc, Del, thumb, arrow and edit clusters unaffected):
Code: [Select]
| * < > ^          [ ] % &
\ ! ( ) +        = { } ? /
  @ # ;            : $ ~

Layer + Shift pressed (Esc, Del, thumb, edit cluster unaffected, left arrow changes to 0, up changes to .):
Code: [Select]
F1  F2  F3  F4  PrntScr          /    7 8 9   -
F5  F6  F7  F8  ScrLock          *    4 5 6   +
F9  F10 F11 F12 Pause          Insert 1 2 3 Enter
                                      0 .

The top picture layout looks amazing, it seems the best of a lot of worlds (HHKB / Ergodox)?. Want it!

ErgoDream:

I love my 'Dox but I do miss the function row, especially when I'm gaming.  Having to rely on a layer modifier to access the F keys is not efficient.  I've also had to make some compromises with the arrow keys that could be eliminated entirely by adding a 1u key on each side along the bottom.  I'll keep on dreamin...

x-post from Deskthority:
  • a 60% staggered layout inspired by Sun/Unix keyboards and DreymaR's Angle/Wide ergo modification
  • all keycaps are "standard", it's a combination of ANSI (Enter and Tab-shaped backslash), ISO (left Shift and the ISO key) and JIS (right Shift and backslash, 1x keys in the Backspace spot), with the spacebar row extrapolated from winkeyless to uniform 1.5x layout (the keycaps would be presumably inverted)
  • the symbol arrangement is left as QWERTY for reference, although I type in Colemak (with custom layers) and would probably learn DSK properly, if I planned to use this in actuality

Now, what I do happily use is my 80key ErgoDox. It's remapped to Colemak with custom layers in software. The great thing about this setup is that I can use both thumbs and an index finger, all in their resting positions, and get a proper Czech quotation mark, and almost the same applies to other common punctuation symbols, as well as letters with diacritic marks.

I would say that there is no such thing as an ideal layout, but I am getting partial to this:
102626-0
Maybe the Return key should be vertical... or even "Big-ass".
Not seen are the trackpoint, scrollwheel and mouse buttons in-between Space and Erase.

Not sure where you're seeing Ergodox (maybe the extra row for a spacebar?) but thanks :)  I'll definitely make a board similar to this one day, once I can settle on the exact details...

That's a nice layout! Does the AT PCB have pads under the stabiliser holes too, to allow this layout?

Every barrel on the AT has a pad.  That layout is what I use as a daily driver.

The only thing that it takes for an ANSI mod on an AT is 3 M style stab inserts and proper M caps.  I personally prefer the ones without the wires.  There are also two pads on each side of the space bar but no barrels for those.  But apparently it is a fairly trivial amount of work to use those, and swap in an M space bar.

The hardest part about using an F, is no homing nubs on F and J, well for me at least.

Other random layouts that I have thought about include -

A Sun type 118 board

A Cherry M15 Clone

A TKL / TheProfoist(sp?) / Lightsaverish board

Minimalist Board

I kind of like how "ultimate" John J. G. Savard got...

and

He even has it complete with scan codes. http://www.quadibloc.com/comp/scan01.htm

/Would prefer it with a matrix/non-QWERTY layout, but it's pretty darned ultimate.

Basically a Gon/Jmargo 70 with a standard spacebar location and function keys aligned with numerics:
