Not quite as fast or as much injury risk, but arguably harder, this is also insane: http://youtu.be/XIeYb_vLirQ#t=12m25s

Game is Crypt of the Necrodancer. It’s a combination of DDR-style rhythm game / roguelike game.  You need take some movement/action on every beat of the music, while fighting your way through a randomly generated dungeon full of randomly moving enemies.

In particular, the guy does a live try (during a marathon) of the Coda character in the game, which is nearly impossible to finish. Any missed beat or hit from an enemy is instant death, and the character requires double the normal beat speed. A bunch of the enemies drop gold when they die; walking on the gold is instant death.

K, i'll admit.  that's pretty hard..  I've only ever played with one hand, and it's impossible to do that many 3keys with 1 hand.

Stepmania! I love this game.  :)  Don't play nearly as much as I used to and I'm by no means spectacular, but it is a fun game.

It's impressive, even if as a BMS doubles player I have to post the obligatory

and yawn.

you won't get rsi if you play with 2 hands..  but one handed, the jumps are too heavy on the wrist.

Training to become Cherry switch longevity tester?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

long time DDR/stepmania fan checking in...

the secret sauce for stepmania is to not use a mech keyboard. rubber domes perform significantly better IMO. You aren't worried about weird actuation points. Topre kind of works but I wouldn't do that to such a board.

I've played on mechanical, it works fine..

The mid travel actuation time is well below the marvelous timing threshold for perfect/marvelous which is 2 frame and 1 frame..

Ah good old Stepmania. No substitute for the real thing unless you have an arcade replica hard pad and a kicking sound system, but an amusing diversion nonetheless. I still play it sometimes. The muscle memory, once formed, never goes away.

I never got too big into fanmade stuff, most of it I've tried just aims for being lolcrazyhard! rather than anything original or fun or even following the damn music. (There are of course exceptions to this, such as the old Bemaniruler versions of A and V, which are composed of utter madness but still follow things in the actual song, or a version of Stoic that came out before Extreme did that did lots of fun nonsense with freezes and BPM changes... Well back then I was using DWI but the files still work.) I have motor issues that make moving that fast basically physically impossible so it's not even attainable, let alone enjoyable. I've always been the same way with official stuff too. So much stuff just falls into lol 16th/32nd step jump streams because I can!1. Pfft.

Now if only I could get a decent Doubles experience on a keyboard. Maybe whenever I finally get my Planck, that'll have enough gridded keys. Still no substitute for the real thing though. Gods I miss having DDR machines around. :(

...I'm still irritated that you can get an AA without a full combo nowadays. What is this nonsense.

In that video they said that at 60 frames/s “marvelous” is actually a 3 frame window.

The guy in the video had what appeared to be some kind of board with Cherry MX switches. He seemed to be doing fine with the timing.

If you watch this video, his hands and fingers are extremely tense, and he’s holding his hands in a pretty uncomfortable way for his wrists (extended and pronated) while also pressing the keys pretty hard (this might be inevitable with such keying speed requirements), causing a fair amount of shock with each keypress. Using most types of rubber dome boards would be even worse from a mashing perspective, because they don’t actuate reliably until the very bottom of the stroke.

Actually pretty much everything about his posture (neck, back, shoulders, arms, hands) is pretty far from a neutral position and pretty tensed up. I hope he takes frequent breaks and doesn’t practice too long at a stretch, or injury seems pretty likely.

Plus or minus 1 frame is 3 frames..

Plus or minus 2 frames is 5 frames..

In any event, the key is that the actuation be predictable/uniform and known to the player. There’s a delay of several frames between the brain directing the finger to move and the actual keypress, and a time mismatch between when the brain gets audio, visual, and finger touch feedback. Luckily human brains are really good at blending these different signals together to make them seem instantaneous, and at timing motor actions to correspond to a rhythmic beat.

It would be interesting to test whether rubber dome or e.g. MX switches work better for this type of game. My own suspicion is that the experiment would tell you that whatever keyboard you practiced on resulted in the “best” performance. (At least as far as time accuracy is concerned; different switches might have different peak keying speed.)
