Any skateboarders here?
« on: Thu, 28 April 2016, 00:38:16 »
I'm in China and saw a pretty girl pass by me today on the way to class on a skateboard. She was handling it really well and I think it would be a good and cheap alternative to biking (since bicycles get stolen all the time).

Anybody use a skateboard here?

I haven't skateboarded since I was a teen. I never used it commuting, just cruising around. I saw someone go by on a longboard that was motorized, appeared to have a little control device in one hand. I'd guess he was going 15mph.
Edit: ~24kmh

You'll go through a lot of shoes from foot braking. I commuted with longboards and shortboards for years. If you think you'll have fun go for it. Fastest I've gone on a skateboard is 35-40 mph (56-64 kpm). Florida's hills are pretty tame, depending on where you're at you might go through shoes faster.

When I say commuted I meant to work, to buy groceries, etc. Skating is fun but it made me sweat like crazy, so much so that I had to change all my clothes before clocking into work haha

I use a skateboard, cruiser & longboard depending on the situation.
I'm guessing you'll be using one just for travel & not tricks?

If so & if you're buying the parts separately get softer wheels like 75A-85A durometer.
They'll absorb more vibrations, grip the ground better & have a smoother ride overall.
Bones Redz bearings are a fast & affordable choice.
Board size/shape & truck width is up to you really.

The Crailtap Couch Cruiser is a great pre built one, smaller trucks & board so it's fairly light compared to regular boards.

Not sure how the options are in China tho :p

Just don't get a lame Penny board :))

Oldschool skateboards (the ones with the fishtail) are longboards by today's standards

I recently started skating again (last summer). I'm basically just cruising my neighborhood (pretty freshly paved) on some 55mm hard wheels and trying to relearn some old tricks from 20 years ago.

As was mentioned above, if you are just using it as a means of transportation, you'd better get a wide board, some tall trucks (perhaps w/ risers), and some very large and soft wheels.

I skateboarded off and on for probably 15 years. I still have a board today and can still do a few basic tricks, but I definitely don't skate like I used to. I also used to race longboards, and commute across campus in college on one.

Couple shots from a warm up run. Those were probably at 40 or so mph. Anything much faster than that and I had custom motorcycle leathers. Went as fast as 60 mph, which is only slightly terrifying.  :))

Long boarding is the way to go for commuting.  I ride street and I longboard and trying to commute on a street deck with 52 mm wheels will rattle your nuts off.  I suggest a 33"-40" board with at least 1 kick, traditional kingpin trucks and 65mm-70mm wheels 80a duro.  If you aren't going up and down curbs n ****, you don't need kicks.  In that case, go for a 36"-41" drop deck with either traditional or reversed kingpin trucks and 70mm wheels 75a-80a duro.  If you'd to do some research, google silverfish longbaording and join the forum.

Would something like this do? I'm not planning on doing any tricks; just kinda wanna try it out for going to/from class and the store, which would normally take me 15-30 mins of walking.

The wheels for that are 52mm and 95A, and I think I'm going to get 70mm 78A to swap on there. Would that be fine?

D: These wheels I'm looking at say they come with two 8mm "thick pads", rectangular blocks with two circles inside. Are these risers?

Yeah. And those look to be some pretty tall ****ing risers ahahah. I can't read that site, though. Does it say something along the lines of converting a regular street deck to a cruiser? Seems like that is what the kit is for based upon pics.
