Legends say that those who live long enough to reach end game start group buys and then scam people out of all their money.

Haha...Sure does seem like this is true....

Super active senior members buying everything in sight...they get bored of the hobby...do GBs...do more GBs then make an excuse that someone is sick, family problems, job issues...then run away with everyone's money....

Since buying my RF 104U Silent, I haven't had a desire for anything else. I've basically retired from collecting(for now), though I'm stilling on the lookout for a nice Topre key cap set.

I mean I'm pretty much at my end game boards right now, so I really just sit back and enjoy the community. I've made some good friends here, and enjoy talking with them on a daily basis.

And it's always awesome to see what else is coming down the pipeline, from artisans to keyboards.

Waiting to see what else is coming down the pipeline kinda implies that you haven't reached "endgame".

You can watch without buying. No implication.

My wife I a also push her button . But now she have her button push by a different men. So I buy a keyboard a mechanicale, she a reliable like a Fiat.

There are still a gazillion boards and switches that I have not tried and I can't help wondering if I'm missing out on something I haven't tried.  Unfortunately every store I've been to only has microsoft and logitech boards on display, so you have to try a friend's board or buy it yourself and keep a board you sort of like, or return it for a loss.

Think I'm at what I now consider "the end"

For me it just means the lust after each and every new thing that comes around has worn off. There are very few keyboards I'd ever be interested in trying, and almost none that I'd like to own. I like following the community's developments and look forward to certain artisan sales that could complete the only keyboard I'm still trying to put together (my Filco with a Halloween theme). I don't buy artisans only to trade them any more, I only enter sales for the few caps I'd keep. New customs are super interesting and I'd have a hell of a time choosing one if I were interested, but to be completely honest I don't think any would be better than the keyboards in my collection.

I still have a small list of odd projects I'd like to explore (documenting my 356 Mini, converting my Hall Effect, creating an ALPs-compatible acrylic plate for the Mini, low-profile case for the beamspring) but I'm not in much of a rush because diminishing returns are so incredibly extreme at this point.

It's mostly just pushing something in a new and creative way for sake of doing it. I unfortunately don't have much time to hang around in IRC or Discord like I've done with other communities when I was younger, but I cherish the small connections I've made and still love sharing my collection with others. I'd like to go to a meetup, but I'm pretty far out of the way so hopefully I can figure something out in the near future. Got some cool stuff I think people would love to try out :)

I made an account to reply to this post. (to be fair I was going to make an account anyways, but this sparked it)

I reached my endgame, and I'll tell you what happens.

I didn't reach my keyboard endgame, but I did it elsewhere where gear-whoring is a serious thing. I picked up longboarding very seriously about 6 years ago. I don't mean cruising, casual riding, et cetera, I worked my ass off for multiple hours each day to get good at racing, to the point where I would have done it professionally if it was in the cards for me (there's no money in it, and essentially you lose money just by traveling to competitions- as a student, this was not an option for me) but instead I just went towards the extreme end of casual. I won't bore you with the details, but essentially high grade boards involve three parts, those being the wheels, the turning mechanism ('trucks'), and the board itself. There are thousands of boards, 'trucks', and wheels, all with very different riding feels to them, and I spent five years making my setup. I bought over 20 pairs of wheels, 10 trucks, and 12 boards, mixing and matching my setups and tuning them to find what truly worked for me. In this sport, your connection to the road depends on your board, and when you're racing at 50+ MPH, you have to be damn confident in your gear.

It probably took me 1000+ hours of tinkering and riding to figure out what worked best for me, and eventually I found it, the one setup that I could not improve with any technology on the market, at least for me. It took a lot of money and a lot of time raging when I'd spent an hour assembling a board only to find out a few hours of riding later that it didn't feel right for me. I went back to the drawing board again and again, but one day I finally got all of the right high-end gear to complete my journey to make something that enabled me to feel truly comfortable riding. Most people who longboard seriously never actually achieve this, and pros get custom gear made for them to get closer to the endgame.

So I'll tell you what happened- I was finally satisfied. I can pick up my board, ride it, look at it, and never find a way to improve it, down to how many turns I tightened the trucks. So what happened? I stopped caring about getting better gear. I was done, and that was out of my mind. I could focus exclusively on riding because I never again needed to go back to my garage and change my setup. Hear these words from someone who has actually reached endgame, even if it's not a keyboard endgame. You probably won't go onto Geekhack or Deskthority once you reach your endgame, because you don't need to. There's the chance that you really like collecting gear, but from a practical standpoint, once you find your white whale, you won't be searching for another one. You don't sound like a collector to me, so I can assure you that once you find your keyboard, the perfect keyboard for you, you won't need to come back and keep looking. It sounds obvious but it's not. If you are purely in this because you want a perfect typing experience, then yes, if you put in the work, you will eventually drop this as a hobby. That sounds somewhat sad, doesn't it? In a sense it is, but it's also not, because haven't you achieved what your goal was in the first place?

I might get flamed because this isn't strictly keyboard talk. I don't really mind. I'm still searching for the perfect keyboard for me, and as a perfectionist it will certainly take me a while, but mark my words: When you reach endgame, the only feeling you will have is satisfaction.

I don't think anybody reaches "endgame", they just get comfortable for a while. Customization is the nature of our hobby. As soon as something new comes out for whatever board you're using, your current dream of endgame can quickly change.

A couple of years ago I got super into the endgame mentality, and I tried to endlessly customize my TKL. Spent a good deal of money, and when it was finally where I wanted it, I didn't get any sense of finality. It pretty much went into the closet once I discovered Topre.

I disagree, if we're only speaking of people who are in this to obtain the best typing experience possible. The whole idea of an endgame scenario is that you get comfortable for not just a while, but forever- unless you're truly die-hard, once you become truly satisfied with your setup, why would you keep searching for something better? If you enjoy keyboards not only for the typing experience but also as a psuedo-collecting hobby, then I do agree, you won't find an endgame board, because finding an endgame board isn't your goal 100% of the way. There are a lot of people who buy a Razor Blackwidow, and for them, it IS their endgame, because they stop searching for a better option.

For a lot of us, though, I don't think the collecting will ever stop.

Thank you!
Rocking a HHKB Pro 2 with a red PBT spacebar, with a WASD v2 TKL Green with Miami on standby. I've also got a Steelseries 6GVS, but the non-standard layout basically means that one's permanently benched.

Still waiting for a good aluminum case for the HHKB, plus I've got a pipe dream to make a custom 140-key behemoth. Macro keys are underappreciated for real.

I still hold to the idea that there is will always be a new switch or a new case to try but I have to know, what bearings do you have on your endgame board?

I run Zealous bearings in that thing, they're so much easier to deal with when I'm cleaning 'em. I used Bones Reds with precision spacers for a while, and the performance is exactly the same, but Zealous edge it out in the simplicity department  :D

I'm kinda at a post-post-endgame point. I don't buy a lot anymore, and when I do I don't like it as well as the stuff I already have. I stayed for the social aspect for a long time, but most of my original crew are inactive now. Then I made friends with some new crew, and some of them are inactive now. So I fade in and out of forum activity.

I doubt I will ever reach an end game. For me, my tastes in keyboard is rather large and varied - Cherry MX clears will always be my go-to, but I've started to really like Topre-based keyboards to use at my school's library. I can see myself branching into other types of Cherry MX's, and even try the famous IBM's whenever I get my hands on one that's in better condition than I usually see on craigslist.

However, even if I did only see myself liking only one type of keyboard, I'd want to try out keyboards from different companies.

but surely you'll have one that you're into more than second and third?

Hm, sure. But perhaps it's just me, but I can't see myself liking one keyboard over another for a substantial amount of period. Maybe another company has a different format of the keys in a way that I like (Which of course is subjective, and will I think lead to many people continuously purchasing keyboards over the long haul), or hell, maybe it's even just the aesthetics of a keyboard.

It depends what kind of niche you're looking for.

I have reached my end-game headphones. They're 25 years old. My preferred type of earpads isn't produced anymore. Thus, I still occasionally browse forums looking for spares or alternatives, in case my current cans fail or fall apart. I'm also interested in compiling a historical overview of associated product lines, because that information is currently missing for the most part.

Pointing devices are worse, because what I want doesn't exist. I currently own several devices, that I consider the best in the market, and I'm alright with them. However, I'm still flipping stuff out of curiosity. I don't visit forums though, because the herd mentality is strong there.

Keyboards are similar to both of the aforementioned cases, at least for me. Moreover, there's a ton of things beyond the physical keyboard: in software.

It only took me a year after I discovered geekhack to buy a topre keyboard, which I've been using for the past 2 years now (Leopold FC660C which I traded for an HHKB Pro 2). I don't really see the point in buying new keycaps or artisans anymore since I don't even look at my keyboard when I type, so I sold all the CCs I got to people who would probably enjoy them more than me :P No point in having a beautiful, colorful keyboard if I don't plan on posting pics of it either.

Of course, it's not like us Topre users have that many keycap options. The only full sets which exist that aren't stock cost more than the keyboards themselves. Every month or so I google 'hhkb keycap sets' and there's never anything new ;_;

I've read somewhere that a reddit user offered/offers a keycap dyeing service that seemed to produce some awesome results.

Are you do anything to change this? Then you don't really need any different caps.

A lot of people don't look at their keyboard while typing (including me) because it slows them down, but I do look at and appreciate its aesthetics at times when I'm not.

I think I'm lucky, I much prefer the aesthetics of stock keycaps, and without artisans.

True, but I don't think I would be willing to drop more than ~$15 for a keycap set. I like the default look of the HHKB keycaps as well, the font/sizing/placement is perfect (Realforce caps, specifically the modifers, however...yuck).
