I would personally go with orange.

Orange is laid back just waiting then.... boom....super speed.

I have black, white, grey, red, orange, blue, and green ethernet cables.  Orange is definitely faster.  The grey one is the least reliable since the clips fell off of both ends, so I'd stay away from that.

Red cars ALWAYS go faster.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

Use the colors to easily identify what cable goes to what :D

is the main reason to have colors

orange cables for production-critical servers, yellow cables for all other servers, black/blue/grey for workstations

Roku = White (cause it's the longest), Roaming cable = Black (second longest), PS3 = Grey (third longest, taped on), PC = Orange (fastest), Media Server = Thin Black (closest in proximity when installing computer), Ethernet cable storage box = all others

For maximum speed, go with pitch-black: the color of black holes, that spiral towards each other, and pull everything else in too. Can't be a coincidence! So black attracts things, like data, right? If it pulls data in too, it has got to be the fastest.

And of course, cover it, so high-speed data does not accidentally escape.

That's not always true, by the way. That said, everyone knows red means speedy ^^ .

I would go with orange, even if it does look like an outdoor extension cord. I think orange is best

Go for gold-plated sleeve to get the squarest bits ... and the most winning.

You don't need Cat 6 or fancy connectors, just use Cat 5e and save yourself some money. Unless you're doing a large building, Cat 5e is perfectly fine for Gbe.

As for covers. Nope, nope, nope. Those f-ing boots harden over time. Many times I have to cut them off just to remove the cable from the router/switch. I've broken a few locking tabs because of those damn things. I would use them on a mission critical system where idiot techs could bump them, but otherwise, nope.

In a home, you should be able to figure out where things go using a common sense approach. Server first, you, spouse, first kid, second kid. Or go by distance. If you have too many for that, you should invest in a patch panel. Not only will it make labeling easier (numbers and charts for the win), but also cleans up the rats nest. The removal of which will also increase speeds.

I'm already invested in Cat 6 SSTP, got 1000feet..  I just wanted to add some flair to the new cables I'm putting in..

I suppose I could color just as well with a marker..

what about yellow or orange...  I can't decide...

Get yellow! All or almost all of the other colours can be found ex factory on mass-produced equipment and are so mainstream. Yellow is not. Plus, yellow is optimistic, it will cheer you up.

Besides, yellow emphasizes your nerd status because you don't care to keep things smooth and sleek, just like people do with their modded high-end keyboards. I vote yellow!
