New Cherry SPEED switch with shorter travel
« on: Fri, 03 June 2016, 05:28:56 »
Cherry has revealed a new switch in COMPUTEX 2016.

https://www.cool3c.com/article/107156

This switch is gray (silver?) and aimed for speed (and named so). The force is similar to red, but the travel reduced from 1.9 mm to 1.2 mm. Seems only available for Corsair now.

Well, actually they announced it back in April. More info from Tom's Hardware:

Man, if I were there I'd have a hard time not stuffing my pockets with switches from that awesome display while nobody's looking.

Isn't that essentially what Razer does?

Razers switches are modified Kailh Blues that actuate higher up and have less hysteresis but their travel distance is the same.

And ALPS switches already actuate higher up and are usually better than MX anyway  :))

The switch is already featured on the Corsair Gaming K70 RGB RAPIDFIRE. The Amazon price atm is $170; that price and non-standard bottom row tho :(

I'm actually interested to feel switches that have shorter travel. Might be interesting.

I think they're talking about the actuation point, not the total travel. They wouldn't be reducing the travel of MX switches *from* 1.9mm because the travel of a MX switch is 4mm.

This.

Slightly off topic, travel distance of alps is 3.5 mm. (not sure on accuation point).

Topre is introducing a keyboard where you have 3 different settings for actuation point.

On topic:  Wonder how much of a difference this really makes in apn games like SC2.

So many of the really good gamers "float" the switches at just the actuation point, I'm not sure they would be impressed. Those really top-end gamers might be more interested in a lower/faster reset than where the actuation point is.

Say the MX Speed switch total travel is 3.4mm (compared to others, such as MX Red at 4mm).

I see this as a gateway switch to Cherry's new (new?) clear switch housing haha. Looks like Gateron made an impression

More reading/listening:
Youtube: Linus Tech Tips: BRAND NEW Cherry MX Speed Switches! - Corsair Booth, PAX East 2016 (April 27)
Geekhack: MX Silver (Speed?) Stem Pictures (May 08)

I had collected info in The DT wiki, but not seen anything new to enter since April 28.

Razers switches are modified Kailh Blues that actuate higher up and have less hysteresis but their travel distance is the same.
Is there really that big a difference between Kailh and Razer blues?

I thought the actuation distance was a property of the Kailh switches ... which Razer chose to blew up as a feature because only to justify the change to another manufacturer.

Now it's going to be even harder to recommend keyboards to people, with dozens of manufacturers, hundreds of keyboards, and an ever-increasing number of switches!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

But isn't it nowadays Cherry switches line up is still much less than the old days?

And that alone was not couting the world of Alps :))

Engineer Hanz: But wait Klaus,  how much difference in travel does that influence..??

Engineer Klaus:  Verpiss dich..   I don't know... just put a larger +/- tolerance in the spec sheet so they can't sue us.... Now, go away, I'm busy with the mid-week sausage competition ..

Eventually they'll keep applying this same marketing to switches and we'll end up with Cherry MX butterfly switches.

I've got it. They'll just use a projector keyboard but it will come with a plate for mounting Cherry caps that aligns with the projector.
I can see it already.

"Cherry MX Lightning: Type with the speed of light! "
It'll even use an rgb projector to increase gaming performance.

Thought there already was a gaming targeted optical interrupt switch?

It's not that often I make comments on them.
