I had gotten a new Realforce 87U 10th Anniversary. I had discovered couple of issue, hoping to get some answers here.

Yes it is. I've owned 3 87u's, and all of them had top covers that moved slightly. It's not a manufacturing defect.

*Edit* Actually, now that I think about it, none of them moved vertically. They only had a slight amount of horizontal play.

How about the super shaky / loose left Ctrl. Kinda like buying a Lamborghini with squeaky door.

Mine has both a bit of cover movement, though like daerid said it was horizontal rather than vertical, and the shaky left control key so it's not only you.

I was thinking about buying a Realforce 87u instead of a Filco with Reds, but these thread just made my mind: I'm getting the Filco. It's an absurd to pay $300 for a keyboard with such kind of manufacturing issues.

Certainly you should do what you like, but I would add that I never considered the ctrl an issue. I never noticed until I wiggled it because of this post. Also, I would add that there are a number of users here that love their realforce boards, including myself.

I've owned 3 RF boards. All 3 boards' left ctrl keys have that uber wiggle like yours does in the video. It's normal....but unnoticeable when typing.

Yeah just checked all of my RF boards. They all have a little play on the control key. My HHKB pro does not have the same amount of wiggle to it, however. Like it's been said, its unnoticeable when typing, and not really a great reason to choose a filco over a RB. Choose the filco if you don't like the way a topre switch feels as you type.

I may open my board up tonight to get a closer look as too why there's as much wiggle as there it in the RF.

I've taken several Realforces apart. I remember the switch housing for the Ctrl key being somewhat different than the rest. The plunger is maybe a little smaller and doesn't have these two tabs that prevent it from falling all the way through if you remove the PCB from underneath it. I also remember it being the only switch on the board that had some lube on it.

I don't know why they decided to make the Ctrl key different than the rest, but it's definitely not a defect, it's designed to be that way. If it really bothers you, can take it apart and swap the switch housing with another key on the board.

Sounds good. That way you can feel the key wiggle across all the keys on your Filco

In general, cherry switches wiggle a lot more than Topre. I know where you're coming from, but I don't think you should let a left Ctrl key or keyboard case deter you from trying Topre. But hey, it's your money.

I like cherry reds a lot too, btw.

I noticed this problem on my rf 87 too.
But not with my rf105.
So I guess it has something to do with the del or/and the fact that you can switch it witch capslock ?
Not sure about the led since capslock and num key are well fixed, but maybe of the combination of those 2 things...

Oh yeah, that reminds me that the numlock key also has a different switch. I think it has to do with the location of the LED that determines which plunger/housing they use. The LED for the caps lock is far enough to the left that they can just use a normal switch. The numlock led is so close that they use a housing that integrate the led into the housing. And the control is kind of in between, so they used a housing that looks like it had the upper left corner sliced off. Are you guys seeing the same thing if you take your keycaps off?

Yes i see the same thing (except the led on capslock is on the right, not on the left)

The ctrl plunger is different from the other two (the housing too).

The left CTRL key on my 87U EK edition wiggles too. I noticed it a while ago. It's a little like a loose tooth, once you notice it you can't stop wiggling it around.

Seems like the problem is common for the left Ctrl, how about the loose top cover as well, wonder is it because of only 4 tabs securing the case thus it will loosen alittle.

I've never been "against" topre... I just hate how people Blow it out of proportion.... it's good.... but some people mislead you into thinking it's EPIC.... which it's far from.

My newest 55g RF has a rock solid case, and I noticed while swapping it out with a white one that the top is slightly curved. This might actually help contribute to the stability of the top cover by applying extra force once the top cover is snapped into place.

My 55g AE top cover slides around a little bit, and my old 45g 87u did as well.

Hrrrmmm... i never checked when I had my 87, is the case abs or pbt.

well, maybe people could try blow drying the top side of the case slightly to put a "bend" in it like your case, and then it'd fit snugly.
