Did you burn up your pcb heating and reheating over and over? I hope it is okay and only your patience and time were lost.

Where did you even find a $1 solder sucker?

You mean like one of those rubber bulb things? like in a female cleansing apparatus kit.

Knowing the proposed Alps Graphite cap set will go best with my next project, though wanting to use thick PBT and having bought an OG US-made AT101 for it (good price though). I just need caps from an IBM PC 5140 for an HHKB layout, which shouldn't be hard to get when someone lists one on eBay for the typical going rate. Then I just -want- a windowed Caps Lock key from a Wang to complete my PBT set. I know a guy who might be willing to part with just that key, but if not, that could be the most annoying aspect of sourcing these caps. Definitely think I'll have the Graphite for aesthetics and PBT mishmash for feels and old school appeal. I planned on dyeing the caps, but an original AT101 isn't something you see every day, and the rest are pretty uncommon too.

TL;DR

good Alps keycaps

Matias PBT should include windowed capslock (eventually), if I'm reading this right:

But worst part is that my girlfriend woke up super sick today so she'll be missing out on important classes today. So I feel bad :/

Luckily it's the last day she has school this week so she has the weekend to get better. I'll be taking care of her till then.

Lying-ass recruiters telling you there's no work or ongoing projects you can jump onto, when you KNOW there's work and ongoing projects.
Even worse is you can't call them out for lying to you because then they will be even less likely to give you more work.

Old adage here:  Jobs suck.  If they didn't, they'd be called play instead of work.

You learn to accept it, make friends, network, and do your damndest to get into a better position. It's all about perspective and taking note of your small victories.  If you become bitter and start to hate everyone and call everyone out, they will hold it against you and resent you.  Remember, they're probably getting ****ed too and I guarantee some of those are getting ****ed from both ends.

Hmmm, that's some solid advice there. Not getting bitter is difficult to do without proper outlets and support. It's just so disconcerting that everyone would rather screw the person next to or under them instead of attempting to collaborate and work together with mutually beneficial outcomes.
I always looked at it (rather idyllically, apparently) as the people on the bottom are doing the difficult and unrewarding jobs, and they are the foundation for all other work on that project. Without the folks doing the grunt work the higher ups wouldn't have a leg to stand on, so they should treat their underlings well and try to keep them happy and motivated. But apparently most places work the opposite, where all the recognition and responsibility is placed solely on the higher-ups so they see themselves as the main ingredient of the project when there are dozens of other people in the trenches making them look good.

Your job is never to get recognition and praise for hard work.  Your job is to make your boss look good.  It sucks to not get credit for your work, but that's how things are.  A team player is someone who doesn't care about individual praise, but makes others look good.

You keep your head down, do good work, make your boss look good and hope someone notices when it comes time for raises, contracts, promotions, and so on.  If it doesn't, well, that's why you should be making use of all the training and education opportunities your job offers so you can take those skills and get a better job somewhere else.  Most people aren't at a job longer than 5 years these days, so do everything to get more skills and good recommendations.

Most people aren't at a job longer than 5 years these days,

I think the average is actually closer to 2 years.

Some of the best advice a boss ever gave me was when I told him I was leaving, he said, 'I'm not surprised, continue what you did here, work hard, do your job and do it well and people will notice and you'll go bigger and better places.' I do think this varies greatly from industry to industry however, some are more cutthroat than others and that was the first real job I ever had and I'm on my 3rd job since then, so far I've always moved up and I would say I'm still on excellent terms with any of my previous employers.

It's called relationship/people management. Once you learn that skill, life is easy in the corporate world. I will admit, it's tough finding the right path through conflicts, but you should definitely start reading some source material to help you with that, or you're gonna have a bad time  ^-^

One example for you (you can google more, if you like)

I ****ing hate corporate jobs, I hate corprate people, I hate the environment and politics. Goddammit if I could go back 6 years and do it over I would in a heartbeat  :'(

I feel you. We have to listen to seminars every week, and I'll be listening to this corporate guy from Exxon and I feel nothing but disgust towards him. I can't put my finger on why. He's probably an alright guy, but he seems so soulless and miserable. And the ones who don't seem soulless remind me of the waiter with a ton of flair in that restaurant from Office Space. I think I'll try to aim for a job at a small company when I graduate, even if it pays 20k less.

Also there are the interview seminars, where they coach you on how to sell yourself to an employer. It's absurdly dehumanizing. I was told to put on makeup to hide the dark spots my acne left.

Edit: Oh yeah, I just remembered a gem the Exxon guy left me with. He was talking about this new campus Exxon built, where it's like a whole complex full of Exxon employees. And he was talking about how we was so lucky and grateful that he was able to live on-campus, so that he could just walk out of his apartment and be right there at his workplace. What a nightmare.

Scammers...

Might as well throw some names around, probably won't get results but might make you feel better. :p

But seriously we need an informed community.
Always good to get the names out there, I agree.

Where should I share such information? here?

You better ask a moderator first they don't usually approve of such things, I was just being a trouble maker.

But seriously PM so I can add them to my do not do business with list.

I honestly don't have an issue with it, personally.  People need to be absolutely certain they don't dox or start a witch hunt, and if it gets out of hand it will be removed.  But as a simple alert to others I support that.

Exxon always rubbed me the wrong way when they came to my school to talk.  I didn't even apply to work there; it just felt wrong.  The money would have been cool, but my impression of the culture was wayyyy not what I'm looking for.

I feel for the industry woes here.  I switched out of Chemical Engineering when I found out how business/plant babysitting oriented it was.  Then I graduate with Chemistry and go into industry.  It only took a year of that bull**** before I went back for the PhD because academia surely cannot be worse.

I had such a ****ty time in grad school that I wonder how this is possible.  I want to go back, but at the same time feel like grad school is just tilting at windmills.

plant babysitting

Hehe.  Thankfully that's not the best description for my job, but I know what you mean.  :))

My last grandma that I have spent so much time with though out my life was in a bad situation for many years at her house. We've finally moved into a house big enough for her to live with us and she has been here for about 6 months. She has COPD and had to go into the hospital for the first time in 58 years in September (the last time was to have a kid), she then went into rehab afterwards for about a month and got stronger than ever and we continue to try to get her stronger for her yearly mountain trip starting this Halloween (she's 89). About 2 weeks ago her wheezing and coughing came back and now she has pneumonia. She's been on four breathing treatments a day since her hospitalization and just got on oxygen for sleeping and when she needs it during the day. On top of this she has had alzheimer's for years and there are times when she questions the things we do to help her (among other things). I am currently only working weekends to take care of her full time during the week as placing her in a home is only in hearts of other family members if they had to take responsibility. Because of the joyous times I have had with my grandma from a very young age all the way up till now I feel it is my purpose to give her all I can until her days are up since the doctor has said that the pneumonia will not get better since she doesn't have the lung strength to cough up anything that would significantly improve her health.

She complains more about being cold than any pain or discomfort she is in and she keeps on an electric blanket all day. She talks a lot about the past and because she can’t hear or see well she will often remember your voice more than your face or name. She lives in a world long forgotten in most minds but her own. The time is uncertain but her future is known. The thing that bothers me the most is that the many years we talked about living together has probably been cut short and she deserved many more days in the hands of people who love and take care of her. It bothers me a lot.

Sounds to me like you need an interest away from computers.

Any other hobby you think you could get into that doesn't require online shopping?
