My country....  :( Currency is literally collapsing was around R11 to $1 in 2015 now it's a hair under R17 to $1 which literally means almost everything is about 50% more expensive especially my beloved hobby  :'(  Pretty scary times..
Aren't there much more scary problems in South Africa than currency and economy? Which part of the country do you live in?

I've lived all over, right now in Cape Town which is a really beautiful place and reasonably well run compared to the rest if you ever get the chance it's definitely worth a visit. There are many problems don't get me wrong (I literally don't know of someone who hasn't been the victim of some crime or other) but this is a serious devaluation in a short time and seems to be getting worse with analysts saying it might hit R20 to $1 pretty soon. The economy is a reflection of the country really, government is another level of bad there isn't much in the way of positive news, rampant corruption etc. I fear things will get a lot worse. It's a massive knock on as currency depreciates fuel goes up (we haven't felt this yet because of oil being at an all time low, thankfully but it's not going to stay there forever) which means food goes up, which means the many poor and unemployed land up in an even worse situation which means crime goes up and so on.... :(  I'm normally the positive one about the country but I'm starting to feel like the frog in the pot that's slowly boiling. Sorry to be so serious but it is what's bothering me. Seriously contemplating immigration, anyone have any suggestions? It's a pity because I love living here and love the country but I need to think of the future.

:(  Hoping everything works out!

Me too

I was just going to ask at what point is this the "only" option.  I have no idea how hard immigration can be, but I know I would welcome you to the US.  :)  Are you able to get a green card / visa (whichever it would be) easily?  Or is that a process that can take a year?

Haha, thanks Hoff  :-[ That is a great question, I don't really know at what point, the problem is as things get worse it gets harder and harder to leave because you effectively have less and less to move with. I have EU citizenship so UK is always an option but I have lived there before and I got quite depressed. I have no idea how hard it will be to get into the US or Canada (Canada seems quite welcoming to South Africans from what I have heard), main problem will probably be finding a good job, I think it's much easier to get a visa if you have a company willing to hire you.  I guess it's something I will have to start seriously looking into. Thanks for listening :)

I would say Europe, but I and many others are already starting to feel like a frog in slowly boiling water. Too soon to say how things will go in the future.

Canada is very nice, but I wonder how long it will be before it takes a turn for the worse with Trudeau at the helm.

Switzerland and New Zealand are probably the best places to live at the moment, but are notoriously difficult to get into.

Why not the US? It's a very good country to emigrate to.

Many things appeal to me about Canada but I don't really have any contacts there so it could be quite tough, hopefully Trudeau won't do too much damage :) I've heard Switzerland is amazing but as you say very hard to get into not to mention I would have to have a job there instantly or wouldn't be able to afford to stay more then 5 mins  :))

And the US of course ;D

Although personally, it is not somewhere I would want to live. While I love the American people and the quality of life there is high, I hate the American government.

That's for sure, no where is perfect. Canada edges out the US for me too because of the US gov. Not that SA has any right to speak about bad gov :)

Turns out getting a 68-key layout keyboard with tightly spaced keys a la smart68 with a thin case is nearly impossible. All cases I find for sale have this huge nasty bezel that I just don't like.

Yeah I've already sent him an email, this university doesn't give two ****s about the students and only cares about the money(hence why I'm switching). All of last semester I left numerous emails and voicemails to my adviser and he never once got back to me.

Edit: As a side note, one of the reasons that she gave me as to why she won't change it is that I took so long to notify her about it. I emailed her a month ago and she just got back to me today...

I'm annoyed because the wife told me today that she and her business partner spent $1100 on "decorations" for their start-up business and had a 10% off coupon that they were too tired of dealing with the incompetent employees to use.

She didn't understand why I was so infuriated after working 9 frustrating hours today to make basically what she would have saved if one of the two of them just had the manager figure it out.

What? Good on girls, bad on dudes.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

The heat is bothering me. Australia is too hot (42ºC last week, so that's 107ºF)

On the topic of looking like movie stars. Apparently I look like a young Bill Murray. At first this bothered me but then I started quoting him all the time and its funny now. I don't look like him though
