Linear switch lovers unite.
« on: Wed, 18 February 2015, 16:45:39 »
Linear switch lovers - I feel like we are in a minority here sometimes.

Show your appreciation for linear switches.

Also while you are here do you tend to prefer light switches like MX red or something stiffer like MX Black or MX grey linear? For either typing, gaming or both.

Checking in.
I only have Reds ATM but my Duck Viper with 55g Vintage Blacks was the second most orgasmic typing feel ever. Second to Topre.

I also have 110 Gateron Clears with 62g gold springs ready to be slapped on a future build.

Complicated SKCM Green Alps
Hall Effect
Gateron Black
Nixdorfs
65g MX Linear (I prefer MX Black stems 'cause I like the look.)

I like all these linear switches :D.

Reporting in, so far tried:
-mx red (too light don't like)
-stock black (slightly too heavy and scratchy)
-broken in black(smoother still slightly too heavy)
- gateron clear  (way too light, unusable)
- gateron blacks (almost perfect stock)

Got gaterons clears on the way with 62,65,68 springs, I'm searching for my sweet point, I think 68 or 65 will be the perfect switch for me.

If you want something between Reds and Blacks, you'll want the 62 or 65g springs. I believe 68 is the same if not slightly heavier than Blacks (I could be wrong)

Ah, a place for me :)

K70 RGB with MX Reds here  :thumb: Haven't had the opportunity to try blacks or any other kind of linear switches but I'm really enjoying my reds for now.

Tried Browns before and something was really telling me it wasn't right. Maybe I would have gotten used to it but I'm glad for now I switched to Reds.

(Not the best picture, I need to take some better ones :))

I'm looking to something very slightly lighter than broken in blacks, Gateron blacks might just be perfect for me, just got to use them for a while to be sure.
But according to those threads:

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=55888.0

68g should still be lighter than blacks.

- lubed 68g MX Dark Greys - because Red and Black are common stems and use a stock lubed MX Black for the spacebar (favorite linear combination)
- worn in stock MX Blacks

looking forward to trying some Gaterons

Can one convert an Alps black into a linear switch? I'd like to try one but don't want to spend a buck.

From what I can gather, a linear sounds nice. Since it's not 'exponential' increasing in force as you press down.

25g MX 1933 vintage blacks
Wow, didn't know Cherry existed in 1933!

(guessing you meant '93?)

Yeah , and he mistyped the '6' as a '2' also... I guess he must have been using the HHKB to type it.

Yes.  I wasn't super-pleased with the results, but it was an interesting experiment.  It's still fun to pull the board out once in a while, so I keep it in my rotation.

https://klikkyklik.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/leafless-alps/

Anyway, I like red MX in my K70 and would love to try Alps linear green sometime.  I didn't care for vintage MX blacks (too stiff).

We shall see. I certainly hope so, anyway. I have some arriving from Taobao today, so I can test them this weekend. If they steal my top spot, well, I will be ordering a bunch more from hwood's GB. It would definitely make my life easier not having to spring swap and lube every time. :)

I currently don't have a linear board, but I do have my hall effect keyboard. It's the smoothest, buttery-est keyboard that I've ever typed on, and I don't mind the 78g keys: they feel perfect.

Vintage MX Black with thick keycaps in a vintage Cherry G80. I've never used anything that would come even close to that in terms of smoothness, although some vintage switches may compete after proper lubrication; in particular, I mean Oki Gourd Spring, Tesla spring-over-membrane or perhaps the usual contestants, such as ALPS SKCL Green, space invaders and older stuff. Gaterons and linear Matias switches sound intriguing as well.

I can't stress enough, how much thick keycaps help with smoothness.

Unlubed, both green Alps and white space invaders are smoother than “vintage” MX black. If all three were lubed, I think it would be hard to distinguish them in terms of smoothness.

worn-in MX Black are current favourites by a good margin. lubed up and 65g springs with stickers (just to eliminate any wobble-chances) is what I plan to do.
not averse to MX Red but I do find myself clumsily pressing them when just resting hands on the keyboard. a bit too light.

looking for Alps SKCL greens to try, but scared I will like them more than my wyse blacks :(

I can't help but agree to disagree. It's probably affected by keycaps though... like my 2012 QFR has gone from awful to okay after just replacing stock caps by Vortex doubleshots. Speaking of that, are there any actually thick and heavy keycaps for Alps mount? Alps Bigfoot and Apple Extended sets aren't bad, but not great either.

(BTW the green mitsumi, cough.)

Switches of choice are Cherry MX linear and Topre's 55-gram. I know Topre isn't linear, but the tactility of the switch is really subtle when the rubber dome collapses under each key strike. I'm using an MX Red Corsair K65 and an RF 87UB/55g. Recently tried an MX Black, yet again; I like the heavier down-force, but the new MX Black switches aren't as smooth as older ones. I'd like to see Cherry come out with a 55-gram linear switch. I like the smooth 'ride' of a linear switch; and the same for the 55g Topres.

Linear switches are my favorite, but that doesn't stop me from using other switches :)

I really want to find some more linear switch boards though. I have boards with stock black switches, 68g black switches, and 75g black switches. The 75g are pretty heavy, they seem a bit heavier than stock black switches while the 68g are somewhere between red and black switches. Might just be the perfect weight.

I have a board with green linear tee mount switches and I would really like to get my hands on a zenith zkb2 or similar board which has green alps switches as everyone seems to like those. I would also like to try out any other vintage linear switches.
