How do you browse GeekHack?
« on: Sun, 09 August 2015, 20:19:30 »
How do you keep up with GH? Desktop or mobile? Watch or notify? Do you browse the Unread or Spy tabs? Do you try to read everything new or just focus on a set of forums that interest you? I'm asking because sometimes I find a thread that's a few days old and think, "how on earth did I miss this one?"

I'll start. I usually check Watched first, as that's an automatic list of every thread I've posted to (and sometimes which I've manually clicked the watch button). If I get through that and I'm still looking for something to read, I'll check the Unread tab. But I don't bother marking anything read unless I've actually read it, so sometimes Unread becomes very cluttered.

Every once in a while I'll start at the Home tab and browse through the individual forums of interest for new stuff.

So how about you? How do you keep up with everything?

I just check all the forums, and if anything interests me in a certain section, I'll check what is new in this section when it pops up, I use spy a bit, probably should more, it's such a useful tool. I use the spy feature on DT almost all the time. I don't know why I don't on Geekhack..

I mostly try to browse everything, and then give some useless comment/snark in reply, trying my best to go off topic.  :-*

What's the difference between Spy, and just reloading Unread?

I use Spy, mainly.  I read pretty much everything. From 9-5 on weekdays I browse from my laptop, all other times are my mobile.

I believe spy updates with all new created threads on geekhack and ones that you haven't clicked already.

Or I'm not understanding fully how the unread feature works. I honestly haven't even noticed it was there, until now.

I think both tabs show every thread with unread posts, new or old. But Spy just reloads automatically so it's always up to date. At least that's my understanding.

I just use Unread everytime I visit GH.

Oh and btw, is there a way to turn off watching topic by default?

Go to your profile area, and there is a drop down menu that has says "modify profile then go to "notifications" and then you'll have an option on that screen.

I mostly use Spy switching between my phone and computer.

Rarely use subscribe or unread on anything but the marketplace subforums.

So far, Spy seems to be a lot more popular than I realized.

I do this too. There are some subforums I never read, and some topics in those subforums I never read.

I don't use tapatalk, spy, or even mobile 90% of the time.

Ohhhh. I was thinking you were able to hide just one subforum in a list, rather than the whole category.

I use my desktop PC and go through unread. I like the button on the spy page where i can click to see the last post that i saw but i don't like how spy refreshes and moves stuff.
I use mobile to check notifications of people quoting me or PM'ing me, most of i time i then go to the PC to reply

Nothing is turned on there though.

It's not the 'notify' part that I have a problem with, it's the 'watch' button on the top of every thread. It's always watching topics by default, so I have to 'unwatch' manually.

i dont understand your reply. are you saying you're sick of me derailing to immature ****.. or in general? because if you specifically mean me.. well, you aren't the only one.

I don't mean you.

With a sense of inevitability?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

And if I had noticed this thread before her and said the first thing that came to my mind when I clicked it ( "Naked with a tub of krytox"), would I be accused of being a try hard and making everything about sex?

Or is there some reason why beemik would get a different reaction?
