Geekhack Census?
« on: Wed, 27 February 2013, 13:42:58 »
If GeekHack were to conduct a census of it's members, what questions should be asked?

1. Age
2. Profession
3. What do you do with your keyboard? Gaming / Typing
4. What keyboard technologies do you use (Cherry / Buckling Spring / Topre / ALPS / Other
5. Where do you live?
6. Have you ever participated in a groupbuy?
7. Have you ever organized a groupbuy?

What other questions would be relevant?

I just wonder what the breakdowns are like.

The thing about what we spend, especially.

For instance, for me, I spent a lot more the first year than I have since, but it may be the opposite for others.

Annual expenditure on keyboards.

I wonder how honestly people would answer that question.

Oh yeah, absolutely anonymous. Maybe I'll ask people to PM me their answers, and I will keep it private. Otherwise it could be spammed.

i know i'm getting really technical here but i wouldn't do this by PM

i would rather if we are going to ask some super interesting queries that we make this fully anonymous somehow where you maybe hash the username so that the "census taker" wouldn't be able to see who entered the data.

if you want a true census and get answers from 30+ people to get some awesome insight then this needs to be fully anonymous.

5. Where do you live?

____ Some basement

6. Have you ever participated in a groupbuy?

____ Yes, and still commenting once per day on the non-responsive GBs, of which would not speed up the buy

Maybe a better question would be: how many new keyboards do you expect to purchase in the next year?

The way I see it we can do this two ways:

1. Google Form/Survey -- the only problem I see with this is that there's no security. Anyone could put bogus information into the survey at will. There seems to be some way of inviting people into the form, so maybe I can ask people who want to participate to send me their email via PM, and then I'll invite them? Seems like a lot of work.

2. People can PM me their responses to a set of questions.

I'm open to more suggestions as to questions and how to deliver the survey. I've never used Google Docs before, so, any tips would be appreciated.

It is sad to think that people would insert bogus information to wreck the survey, but I guess that there is vandalism everywhere.

And the internet has made it a whole lot easier.

I still can't understand what the r00tw0rm thing last summer was about, except someone being infantile.

does "mostly male" mean "gay"?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

You could probably extrapolate that to the point where "all-male" or "all-man" actually means "gay"!
