Exactly one year ago today, this site was rooted and mostly deleted by a group of extremely malicious hackers. At that time, it almost died completely, but the community came together, and in three weeks, rebuilt the site from the ground up and started trying to figure out TOGETHER how to run big fat webforum with an awesome community that is under constant attack by things that it can't necessarily control.
We have decided to start celebrating the period between June 26 (when the attackers brought us down) and July 18 (when we brought the site up again for good) with festivities that celebrate
- How awesome our community is.
- How awesome the keyboard community is.
- How awesome our patrons are.
- Awesome.
We have decided to call June 26 Austre, or The Exodus, as it's the day we were forced to flee the geekhack.org domain and take a temporary home on deskthority. We spent three weeks there, which this year, on the first anniversary, we're going to celebrate (instead of furiously trying to rebuild the site at great personal expense) every one of the three weeks with something awesome. I'm not going to spill everything yet (tbh because we're still working it out), but the first step was to release this cool new high contrast theme, created by rknize. Over the next week or so we'll announce
- A contest! With prizes sponsored by our great friends over at CM Storm!
- New news about old projects
- New news about new projects
- Awesome! (yah, I don't know, we have three weeks, we'll come up with something)
Here's what I'll ask of the community today:
Old timers: discuss last year's incident in rknize's fantastic announcement thread here:
http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45171.0New timers: catch up on last year's drama!
All timers: talk here and there about how we can make geekhack.org an even better place over the next N years!
