Exactly one year ago today, this site was rooted and mostly deleted by a group of extremely malicious hackers. At that time, it almost died completely, but the community came together, and in three weeks, rebuilt the site from the ground up and started trying to figure out TOGETHER how to run big fat webforum with an awesome community that is under constant attack by things that it can't necessarily control.

We have decided to start celebrating the period between June 26 (when the attackers brought us down) and July 18 (when we brought the site up again for good) with festivities that celebrate

- How awesome our community is.

- How awesome the keyboard community is.

- How awesome our patrons are.

- Awesome.

We have decided to call June 26 Austre, or The Exodus, as it's the day we were forced to flee the geekhack.org domain and take a temporary home on deskthority. We spent three weeks there, which this year, on the first anniversary, we're going to celebrate (instead of furiously trying to rebuild the site at great personal expense) every one of the three weeks with something awesome. I'm not going to spill everything yet (tbh because we're still working it out), but the first step was to release this cool new high contrast theme, created by rknize. Over the next week or so we'll announce

- A contest! With prizes sponsored by our great friends over at CM Storm!

- New news about old projects

- New news about new projects

- Awesome! (yah, I don't know, we have three weeks, we'll come up with something)

Here's what I'll ask of the community today:

Old timers: discuss last year's incident in rknize's fantastic announcement thread here: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=45171.0
New timers: catch up on last year's drama!
All timers: talk here and there about how we can make geekhack.org an even better place over the next N years!

I think to take geekhack into the future we have to make sure and coral all the new people and get them indoctrinated so they stick around!!

What am I saying, I have only been here 3 months

To make geekhack better we definitely could use a beefed up wiki....I know it used to be the 8th wonder of the world from what I hear.

We need to do a best groupbuy of the month/quarter/year and maybe hand out some awards for outstanding projects/community contributions/outstanding posters, etc......

Left geekhack 2013-08-24, because of rude and arbitrary moderators.

hash and i have floated the idea of annual awards, but they all involve klaxons. best klaxon. klaxon of the year. best attempt at klaxing off. best klaxsult. etc. the reception to this was fairly dim.

You know what would be cool? Old news about old projects. I want to see stuff like CC's mini Model M, Hasu's Happy Buckling Keyboard, and maybe something Webwit/7bit worked on. I don't know a lot about the old school guys but I've love to see some examples of cool mods or ideas; things similar to wcass' custom membrane thread or xwhatsit's thread on getting a beamspring board to work on USB.

Edit: Thank you for sacrificing in order to rebuild GeekHack mkawa and others! This place has become my online home. ^__^

ask them! this is an open community, but often people get wrapped up in their projects and forget to post updates.

I didn't even know the site was rootwormed at the time,  I just thought it was down for a week because someone downloaded too much porn somewhere.

We know they used GH to try out their new-at-the-time vB4 zero day.  It's not clear if they had any other beef beyond that.  iMav tried to reach out to them, but it didn't go anywhere.

Hey I like GH...

But this type of pride threads very much paints a target on our heads...

And in terms of CRIME on part of the hacker, most CRIME are committed on a Whim...  NEVER tempt that...

Just buy them an Ergo Dox - they will transported into such a paroxysm of joy that they will completely forget about attacking GH.

And it seems that I joined GH only a few short weeks before r00tw0rm.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

To commemorate that fateful day and the weeks that followed in the Geekhacker refugee camp, we are releasing a new, eye-bleeding theme for Geekhack: Austre.  For the next few weeks it will be the forum default, as a tip of our hat to the authority that inspired it.

To this day it freaks me out when I hear about the 'r00tw0rm' incident for obvious reasons. It always feels like folks are going to blame or accuse me.

Not surprisingly, I had nothing to do with it - I'm RootWyrm. Root as in 'root user' and 'root of' and Wyrm as in 'dragon,' not as in 'burrows in and destroys all your crap.' (Nope, I hoard it. I do not nap on piles of gold though.) And no, I don't really work in infosec at that level - practical 'secure your systems and network' crap.

I was on a break from almost everything when all that happened, so I didn't hear about it till after the fact. But I'm certainly glad GH is still here.

As a relatively new member at GH - I can say this is probably the most welcoming community I have seen. Glad I joined, and as far as the site design - I think it's great!

This seems to be fairly consistent feedback from new members - that the new default theme is fine.

One year already... Jeez. Time flies.

Indeed! It seems only yesterday ripster and keyboardlover were at each other's throats.

Aah...those were the good days! I have fond memories of being the Anti-Ripster. We were neck and neck in the Troll Poll! I've got all sorts of fun stories, but I'm not sure if I should post them, depending on how we treat "departed" members on here.

I'm glad to see the old theme's back too. Feels right again. Now if only the site would work in Internet Explorer 5.01 again and we'd be good to go!
