I was recently diagnosed with something really bad (not really gonna discuss specifics here but if you care that much you know where to find me). I have since been looking into vitamins, supplements, etc that might help with my issues and/or just help in general. Before this I took a couple recent prescriptions and that is it nothing else other than an occasional sinus medicine or headache medicine.

I've just started taking Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, grape seed extract, milk thistle, Choline and a probiotic pill.

Always curious to know what others here might have in common and/or might recommend.

Maybe you take supplements because you work out? Or because you never see daylight? Or to give you better mental focus? Or maybe your mom makes you take vitamins?

So are you a pill popper?  :o

I take a daily men's multivitamin, as well as fish oil and St. John's Wort. Green tea extract is another one I normally take, but I have recently been replacing it with organic Japanese green tea.

I'm considering adding fish oil, also read some good stuff on krill oil.

As a certified retard it was recommended I take cod liver oil pills. This didn't last too long but they did seem to help a little at the time.

I also took pills while at uni, that also didn't last for too long.

I take 3-4 different things throughout the day/week. I've got some issues in my noggin that require me to keep taking them for... probably the rest of my life, honestly.

It could be a lot worse, though. They help a lot.

I have a specific form of chronic migraines, about 0.5% of migraine sufferers have this form.  Sucks.  Always changing pills, trying new things; I've tried everything you've ever heard of and most things you haven't!

Right now I take about 24 pills/day, most of them are some form of supplement.
I'm back.

I've heard that many chronic migraine are actually caused by-MILD- food allergies,

Usually it's a food you eat often and would never suspect.. such as milk, wheat, rice, corn (cornsyrup)

I also get migraines occasionally, and then I take Diklofenac (strong NSAID painkiller) plus Ranitidine to counter the increase of stomach acid caused by the diklonfenac.
I used to take Ranitidine daily for problems with stomach acid, but not any more.

Right now I have a sinus infection, for which I take bi-daily doses of nasal spray. I also rinse with saltwater.

I take a daily men's multivitamin, as well as fish oil and St. John's Wort.
You do know that St. John's Wort does inhibit the uptake of many substances into the body, do you?

Migraines here as well, luckily I don't get them too bad, as in pain, but they are pretty frequent. (Maybe 2-3+ a week)

I just had one for a solid month and a half, still kind of have it and it got the best of me last night/yesterday. First time in years it's been that bad.

Side/stomach.
Apparently the worst combo.

not alll of them.. it could be just 1 of them..  you gotta do a dedicated trial to find out...

For example.. Milk is real easy to test..  Drink as much as you can (without ****ting yourself).. then test your nose.. if it feels a bit more stuffy than usually... That's a mild milk allergy..

The other ones, you have to be clean of for a bit longer to see the effect....

Yea... side sleeping is THE WORST for your back..

depending on the shape of your body, it can be even worse..   Tall Skinny people have the most problems with side sleeping..

Fatter people have a better time, due to their waist providing some support.. but overall it's still bad..

Adjusting to back sleeping is TOUGH..   I had to because my shoulder is significantly wider than my waist, and I was basically a Bent L shape when I side slept..

It's fine for when you're a kid, because you have the flexibility, but once you grow older.. that goes away, and it just results in chronic back pain..

It may be influenced for sure..

However, the fact that it's been passed down, also means it could've been a lifestyle choice handed down from her to you,  such as certain foods, living habits..

Look for similarities..  do you both eat bread ?.. drink milk ? eat milk-based products ?

Let's say you have a wheat or milk allergy..  these two ingredients are in EVERYTHING...  you would never suspect it..

then you rationalize and attribute your affliction to random variables during hyper-occurrences..  with no controled testing..

Ask yourself, Do you want to have these problems for life..  or do something about it..

So used to it and have a pretty high pain tolerance so it doesn't really bother me one bit. I could have gone to the doctors years ago if I cared enough, I have been put on medication for it before as well but the side effects were more annoying than the pain. Excedrin migraine works pretty good for me as well.

I don't drink milk much. Last time I had a glass milk was maybe a month ago.

Already talked to them and if I wanted anything done I would have to sleep in the hospital overnight with a bunch of equipment hooked up to me.

I don't know if this counts ...

Next week I will be doing my first run of a Soylent variant called Stephen's Fuel.

If successful I will purchase the ingredients and make it myself.

It's true it's 1,000 cals a day / but I had similiar cals [sometimes lower] when I was very successful on Medifast; and this has way healthier ingredients.  I don't plan to stay on it forever - just 4-6 months.

Already talked to them and if I wanted anything done I would have to sleep in the hospital overnight with a bunch of equipment hooked up to me.

Here's the thing.. I'm sensing a bit of .. putting-it-off attitude..

1 small problem today isn't anything..   you take this problem over the course of Years and Years..

it could lead to serious debilitation..

Chronic migraine also has a large list of comorbidities..

epilesy, stroke, depression, anxiety disorder,

increased aggressions/hostility (wife beating for sure)

hypertension, heart disease,

asthma, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel..

Compound those problems.. and in 20 years.. you pay the lump interest..  your family cries.. hopefully you have life insurance to cut down on funeral costs..

ALL of which could be avoided if you'd just listen to TP4..

Dante, I imagine ur a bit older.. where's the wife to make something like this for you?

Could be cheaper in the long run..

Honestly, I try to avoid pills as much as I can.  If I end up in a position where I 'should' take pills, I try to investigate how I can change my diet to get what I need.  Call me crazy, but I don't trust big pharma.

I take some extra Vitamin C during the winter to try and prevent sickness if I am not eating a lot of foods with it naturally. Other than that, I bring out the caffeine pills during finals time.  :p

Also, thanks for the info regarding sleeping positions tp! I wake up with a sore back, which I now know is likely due to sleeping on my side and being 6ft4!

My wife is never happy about being the only one eating solid food - furthermore she was very much against me buying a weeks worth due to "nutjobs" and "whackos" who could be lacing or otherwise poisoning it.  Who buys random bags of powder as sole source of nutrition from complete strangers?

After I got off Medifast I've done everything to keep the weight off and I've just had to wait long enough to find myself again - the guy who stuck it out for many months to begin with.   Only this time I've got the Interstellar sound track and we're gonna get skinny this time!

I take a daily men's multivitamin, as well as fish oil and St. John's Wort.
You do know that St. John's Wort does inhibit the update of many substances into the body, do you?

If by "update" you mean "uptake" and by "substances" you mean a wide range of prescription medications... then yes.

Other than that, it has no documented interferences with foods, herbs or supplements. At least according to my sources, that is...

Pills are bad for you, the most I take are Tums (which aren't even really pills) and Multivitamins. I don't even like to take an aspirin.

I hope your condition improves soon, SpAmRaY, if it is a condition that can improve!  Or becomes manageable if it cannot.

And no, I don't really pop pills.  The occasional Panadol when I get a headache, which is not that often fortunately.  And maybe horseradish/garlic capsules when I get a bad cold, which also is infrequently.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I avoid pills as much as I possibly can, with the exception of a daily aspirin (I am an old man with some family history of heart trouble) and a (too often) 1mcg Melatonin to help me sleep.

During my adult life I have used vitamins off and on, and for the past couple of years mostly off. They are probably helpful but you have to buy them and keep track of them.

I try to eat healthy and stay in shape, although I really need to lose about 10-20 pounds now.

When I do have some bodily aches or pains, I find that ibuprofen is best at targeting specific pain.

I take a multivitamin in addition to a vitamin D3 supplement because I imagine I don't get quite enough naturally, and I doubt it could be negative at the doses I'm taking. Also some prescription stuff which I'll likely stop soon since I don't think I need it at this point.

I wish caffeine did anything for me, but I seem to have a naturally high tolerance. I have to hit about 500-600mg before I feel anything, and at that dose it's not pleasant. I only drink coffee for the taste.

I significantly changed my food habits and diet in the last 5 months. I've cut out all dairy and all wheat products (all bread pasta etc.) and started counting calories like a madman. So naturally, I need to get calcium and some fibre from other sources like vitamins. So every day I take a multi vitamin for men with extra iron, a potassium pill and calcium. I also cheat a little on the wheat thing and I use course psyllium husk in foods when I cook for fibre and digestion.

So far it works really well. I'm down 67pounds as of today.

milk is a horrible source of calcium for the record.  there's too much other junk in there.

brocolli is where it's at. :)

although in general, your body doesn't really actually 'lose calcium'.  once you're past 21 and chronic disease free, you get enough calcium just by eating veggies.

So every day I take a multi vitamin for men with extra iron,

Iron is problematic for men and there is no way for the body to get rid of it.

If you eat meat and dark green vegetables you are probably getting plenty.

I never take any iron supplement and give blood ~4 times a year. Part of it is for the purpose of getting rid of iron. My hemoglobin is always on the high side of "good" even at that, and my other blood numbers are good as well.

I am the opposite! Whenever I go to give blood, I am super close to the limit at which you have to be above. I don't eat much red meat, but eat quite a few dark green veggies. Even my girlfriend had a high level of iron than me...  :p

I don't eat red meat and rarely have dark greens.  Well I might have dark greens 2-3 times a week and red meat maybe once or twice a month. I track absolutely every bit of food or beverage I intake and all of its nutritional values and try to hit the recommended levels. As it stands, I'm about 30% short on iron every day even with the vitamins.

false

the best way to get iron is to eat an animal, but there are veggies that are iron-rich, such as spinach, which are about 40-50% as good as a nice steak.

I appreciate the concerns and help for my migraines. I could write books on what I've tried...

Chiropractor, acupuncture, acupressure, Chinese medicine, Tibetan medicine, fasting, etc.; I've tried them all as well as 11 different neuros.

Diet- yes can have a profound effect for about 60% of migraine sufferers. I've tried (in order) gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, vegan, paleo, Whole 30. None of them helped.

What has helped is the research clinic I go to:  Jefferson Headache Center in Philly. If you have migraines or headaches and your local neuro has nothing else to offer, go there. They've helped me a ton. I go up there about 4x per year. If anyone has any questions pls PM me I'm happy to help.
I'm back.

I 100% agree. I heard so many times some trusted nutricionist mention that most supplements (if not all) never give the same benefits as eating it same vitamin and/or nutrient from a natural food source.

Why eat fish pills when you can eat fish? Why take vitamins when fruits and vegetables are full of them? etc. And it cost less to eat well that to eat pills and for better results usually.

they would be completely correct.  your body is pretty much completely clueless on how to digest pills(they don't do anything to start the digestive process). vitamin supplements are commonly called 'expensive pee' by nutritionists and trainers.

the best way to get iron is to eat an animal, but there are veggies that are iron-rich, such as spinach, which are about 40-50% as good as a nice steak.

Not quite true, here are some iron content numbers for you...
Spinach: 3.6mg/100g
Top Sirloin Steak (broiled): 1.7mg/100g
Tenderloin Steak (broiled): 1.7mg/100g
Ribeye Steak (grilled): 2.2mg/100g
Chuck Eye Steak (grilled): 2.4mg/100g
Porterhouse (broiled): 3mg/100g
T-Bone Steak (broiled): 3.4mg/100g

So in fact Spinach has MORE iron than steak...

Other plant based sources of iron:
Peas: 2.1mg/100g
Green Beans: 1mg/100g
Beets: 0.8mg/100g
Broccoli: 0.7mg/100g

If you want some real iron, then go with some legumes.
Chickpees: 6.2mg/100g
Black Beans: 5mg/100g
... and so on ...

People just like to eat meat so they propagate the idea that it is super healthy.  Meat is good, but it should really only be eaten in relatively small quantities compared to how much we eat as a society today.  A plate should be max 1/4 meat and should have at least 1/2 be greens of some kind...

The only problem with these "nutrition" plans, is that they're extremely expensive. And all the cooking involved.. and how generally plants don't taste good to most people..

sigh......
