feeling depressed again lately dunno why

haven't rly been having fun on GH. typically big sign towards depression striking again is when I feel like quitting gh. just got a new board too :/

also literally the only downside of my amazing job is that since I'm at work watching and playing games all day when I get home I just don't rly wanna get on my computer anymore

Sorry to hear you are feeling down.

Sounds to me like you need an interest away from computers.

Any other hobby you think you could get into that doesn't require online shopping?

Woah woah woah....

The internet is the frontier..

Anything and Everything else is to Go-Backwards..

I'm not saying don't get offline, if that's DIRECTLY making you sad..   but, we mustn't so readily put the blame on internet culture, because it is merely the natural evolution of our days past, in a much more succinct presentation.

I am bothered that I spent a lot of time browsing Geekhack instead of typing in Geekhack. My mech keyboards are not being fully used!

Funny, I'm actually trying to post less, because I feel my posts often don't contribute that much.

I just looked at him and smiled how do I repsond to that? .-. Thing is boss 2 is a pretty chill person so I'm like K anyway I just walked away and said I need to file some stuff...

I would kind of shrug and say, "Haven't really thought about it; he and I have never had any problems." Boss 1 might start saying "Oh yeah, he did this and that and watch your back..." whereupon you just say, "Thanks for the heads up, I'll keep an eye out for that."

Basically totally avoid giving any negative opinion while avoiding calling Boss 1 a snide P.O.S.

My engineering design class is a joke taught by a professor who has no clue what he's doing but thinks he's a genius.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

My teacher claims to be OCD and organized but finding files and assignment descriptions is like getting through the shining labyrinth.

He also has yet to correctly answer a single question from me regarding NX.

I'm going to tear him to shreds in my mid term review.

Good luck with your coworkers, I can imaging the pain they must cause you.

I think the problem is..

There are many people with "engineering talent"

but

They don't possess the proper communication skills to explain the "stuff" they've engineered.

Then they can't really get "recognition" for their efforts, and then they end up as college professors and begin to lament the world that couldn't see their genius..

My engineering calculations professor is the closest to a genius I've seen. It's impossible to catch him off guard with a question he can't answer, even if it's only tangentially related to the classes he teaches. And he knows how to explain stuff. He went into teaching right after he got his PhD from MIT - he says he just loves academia, learning and teaching.

His exams reflect all that - about half the people will drop the class the first time they have him, and those left will have an average grade of C. And that's after a very generous curve. Working hard to keep our university's degrees valuable, I guess...

this sounds exactly like one of my math profs from undergrad. maybe they're related...

son of a ***** would learn the entire course the day before he started teaching (i saw him doing this during office hours), then do every lecture without notes. he was coach of the putnam team too.

i never felt so mortal in my life.

Thank you for your input.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I know a lot of people don't like Apple stuff, but I do.  It has all the Unixy bits I need, a nice GUI, and Just Works (tm).  I upgraded my late 2009 Mac mini from its original Snow Leopard installation (untouched since I bought it apart from security updates and it still worked fine, I just needed to install some newer software that only worked with 10.9+) to Mavericks and it's given the Mac a new lease on life.

But ...

The optical drive is dead and I need to install some software from the original applications DVD that came with the Mac.

I tried to insert the disc many times in the Mac mini, to no avail.  it span a few times and spat the disc out.

So I tried to mount it on Linux.  I tried all sorts of filesystem options.  I installed extra HFS+ packages to try to mount it.  I looked at logs.  I tried to look at the disc structure.  Nothing worked.  I even found a bug report for the kernel or something that prevents HFS+ volumes from mounting.

Then I tried DVD sharing with my Windows PC.  Install the necessary software, open the firewall and insert the disc.  Back to the Mac, open a new Finder window, and nothing.  No "Shared DVD" icon.

So I applied a couple of hacks to enable this feature, as it is apparently disabled by default on Macs with a built-in optical drive.  Restarted the Mac.  Still no icon.

I disabled the Windows firewall completely, just in case, and restarted the Mac again.  Still no icon.

I tried sharing the DVD drive via Windows, and the Mac eventually saw it, but couldn't see any files on it.

I turned the Windows PC off.

Then realised I left the DVD in the drive, so I turned it back on, took the disc out, and turned it off again.

Bleah.

Now I'll have to get one of the old Power Macs I have and see if it still works, if it still boots, if the optical drive still works, if it can read this much newer DVD, and if it can still connect to the network and copy the installation files somewhere I can pick them up from the Mac mini.

Heck, I don't even know that sort of files are on the DVD.

So that's about 2 hours wasted, and at least another hour to go to fsck around the the old Power Mac.  I don't have that much spare time on the weekends to fritter away on fruitless exercises like this.

And then to top it all off, I gave up for tonight, checked my emails, and found this:

Thanks guys.  I needed that :p

I don't have that much spare time on the weekends to fritter away on fruitless exercises like this.

That is why I have become quick to back up and abandon old hardware, especially drives, at the first sign of flakiness.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Firstly, i think everyone is immune to his vulgarity.

Secondly, my own view - I think he has a point, especially those who were whinning about CC scamming them and selling their spots.

How does his "chaos" not make sense? It's perfectly clear what he is talking about.
