I'm paying about 20% (state and federal) in California and I'm a little over that.  Factor in sales tax on essentials and my effective tax rate is closer to 25% of my income.  I haven't seen any studies on 6 figures in California, but I know that, nationally, it's closer to a 3% difference between the bottom and the lower top (and less than a 1% difference between the 0.01% and higher), but that once you factor in sales tax and other taxes, the lower classes pay a higher effective tax rate than the higher classes.
